My older cat had a sore mouth. He was given surgery and pain pain relief. Something made me feel a bit uncomfortable that I just couldn’t put my finger on and it was hard to go back. My cat didn’t get better: he was drooling, his mouth smelt and there was blood in his drool. Fair enough. Things happen. I will also admit that I turned up late to my appointment because the battery in my wall clock was running out and gave me the wrong time. Maybe they were just rushed. But I felt more than uncomfortable with the diagnosis. I suggested that perhaps my cat had gotten an infection and needed antibiotics. Oh no, I was told, antibiotics would not help in this situation. The option was to have surgery again, at the cost of $500, to find out what was going wrong. I did suggest that maybe just an x-ray first would be a good idea (or even looking at the before and after x-rays that had already been done). This visit is costing me an extra $163 on top of the $1400 for surgery and the $163 for the initial consultation. Having to say no to advice when your pet is clearly very sick is hard, but I had to make an excuse and walk out of there. I said I couldn’t afford more surgery and they suggested I just try the pain relief for another week and reassess, except I wasn’t given anymore pain relief. I went to another vet (cost me $100 and the I didn’t feel like there was a time limit I had to stick to or else). They gave me antibiotics and more pain relief. No extra x-ray was necessary and no surgery. This vet just examined my cat (looked in his mouth). Now my cat is recovering really well. I also got a very comprehensive explanation, rather than the vague answer that they wouldn’t know what was going on until they did surgery again. This vet also said that usually if they did dental surgery they sewed up the gums to avoid infection. My friend happened to have dental surgery on their cat (that is how I found the new vet) and it was a lot less expensive and their cat had stitches. It could all be a misunderstanding, but I have to say I feel really good about not going back. Read Less

I took my dog (age 13.5 yrs) to this Vet last Wednesday, I was aware that my dog (Bonnie) did not have much time left and was basically looking for a 2nd opinion. I was offered various diagnostic scans and treatment ranging from $700 to $935 I declined the scans (had already had a 3D ultrasound previously at my regilar Vet). Was keen to proceed with pain relief, diuretic and urine test. I felt very uncomfortable at this time, I felt no empathy, compassion or privacy as to how my daughter and I were feeling in the midst of losing our very much loved dog; was further aghast when we were asked to "settle up" before our pet had even passed. No offer to say our goodbyes in private. Was initially very upset about this, now I am angry. Could and would not recommend this practice, which seriously need to reassess their end of life practices to our special family members! Read Less

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your first experience at our hospital. We would like to take this opportunity to reply to your review and urge you to contact us directly if you would like to discuss this matter further. When you presented Bonnie to Kincumber Veterinary Hospital, you had advised us that she had been deteriorating over the last week. To get a better understanding of her current condition we offered you a fully itemised estimate diagnostic testing in addition to the urinary test you had directly requested. This was offered for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the medical records transferred from your original vet contained no medial detail of Bonnie's previous examination, medical condition/s or any test results, just simply an abbreviated list of tests which had been performed. We when requested further details from your original vet they were unable to be provided. The lack of medical records left us working from our physical examination alone. Secondly, Bonnie's condition had deteriorated, and we were trying to ensure we were not missing any newly developed condition - you may recall me discussing my concerns about the development of pneumonia with you during the consultation. Within 5 minutes of Bonnie's examination it was discovered that she required oxygen, we took Bonnie to our treatment area and started her on oxygen therapy with you right by her side. Saying good bye to a pet is never easy, and unfortunately for Bonnie she was desperately unwell and could not be taken off oxygen in our intensive care area for you to have time alone with her. You may recall me advising you that to do so would be grossly distressing to Bonnie as she would be unable to breath and would be suffocating. We were able to accommodate both you and your daughter in the room but unfortunately not your other dog, and so I arranged for a nurse to look after him while you stayed with Bonnie. Sadly, there are situations when the goodbyes cannot last as long as we would like or be in such a way that is ideal. Without clients discussing their unique wishes with us, we are unable to try and make alternative arrangements to meet these wishes where possible nor explain why it may not be possible for their wishes to be met. We really try to limit these occasions as much as possible but still put the welfare of the pet first. We have found that most pet owners prefer to settle their account before saying goodbye as this gives them the opportunity to leave after their goodbyes without having to face others in the waiting room when they would just rather leave quietly when they are ready. Again, we apologise that this was not done in the manner that may have allowed you to feel more comfortable, but without any indication from you or your family, we could only do what we have found works in the best interest for our clients in the past. We would again like to extend our sympathy to you and your family for the loss of Bonnie. We realise that you did not expect to lose her so quickly, but unfortunately, she very, very unwell and struggling to breath when you brought her in. Repectfully, Dr Liia Kelman Veterinarian and Hospital Owner.

Response from Kincumber Veterinary Hospital
25 Jun 2018
Truly the best vet we have been to in the area (and also out of the area). They assessed our situation, and very kindly took a unique and caring approach to our beautiful dog. We have been to vets who are very clinical and seem to have lost their compassionate edge but not these guys. They were also very well priced, we had tried a few vets before finding them so the comparison was noticeable. Read Less
