In July I was recommended Ascot Veterinary Clinic by my normal vet to get my dog a Rabies vaccination as she would be travelling overseas with me.
I was, at first, very happy with Ascot's (in particular their chief vet, Scott) service and went away feeling relieved that everything would be smooth sailing in what is an innately stressful time.
Recently as I was finalising the paperwork with my dog's travel agent (can't recommend them highly enough) I realised that the rabies vaccination that I had been sent over email had none of the required information (Batch Number, Expiry Date etc) written on it.
After turning my house upside down I could not find the original at all.
This at first did not worry me too much as with all vets I've ever been to a medical history similar to that of a person's is kept, and therefore Ascot would be the same, right?
Wrong.
I called Ascot and was informed that it is not in their procedure to keep notes on rabies vaccines (who knows what else?) and it was my responsibility to keep the original and only document proving my dog had been vaccinated.
They would not send me a copy of the information and if I wanted my dog to fly I would have to pay for another vaccination.
Feeling helpless I booked one in for the following day but also started to research this to see if I was in fact being cheated.
What I found was that this is completely incorrect practice; while it is my fault I lost the original I was then fed misinformation about needing a specific sticker from the vaccine bottle that was a one off.
This misinformation is what would have forced me to spend more money on something I already had.
I called two other vets that offered rabies vaccines before long haul flights and my own personal vet and they all said that what I had been told was incorrect.
I then called AQIS and spoke to Gary (the man in charge of all out flying animals and their vaccine procedures from Australia) and he confirmed that they should just be able to reprint my receipt and then I could send it to him.
After I relayed this information to the receptionist the morning of my appointment she very defensively said that she 'could call Gary right now', which I of course encouraged her to do.
After she spoke with him she confirmed that they would get me the information I needed. Magically they could now get it. But only after I paid $40 for the printed sheet of paper. Pretty high cost for an admin fee?
When I confronted the receptionist about the $40 charge all I received was slightly elevated "t's your fault for losing the original" responses and a snide smile.
Yes, it is my bad for losing the original. But all other vets can just reprint these things for no extra charge.
As my current vet did when I asked them for my C5 proof for the same flight.
Speaking to my dog's travel agent and another vet I was informed that they had heard of Ascot doing this before and also forcing a woman to pay $40 just for an initial on her receipt.
It is abhorrent that the people we trust to keep our animals with us have built a system into their practice that guarantees them extorting more money out of people in a desperate and stressful situation.
People are willing to throw money at problems in times like this to ensure that nothing goes wrong. I am certain that Ascot Veterinary Surgery knows this and uses it to their advantage. Read Less
