Today I had concerns for my cat who had scratched his eye. As I really couldn't afford a vet bill I went on line to check out various options and phoned a couple of vets explaining that I couldn't afford a consultation fee but thought that an eye drop would be a good preventative to infection although the eye was not weeping closed or showing signs of been uncomfortable or painful to my cat. Of course I was told no you have to have him checked to get the ointment he needed. So I did. Well the vet after putting dye in his eye told me the eye wound was superficial but said antibiotics would be a good option. She explained that antibiotics would cost $38 for tablets or $49 for an injection that lasts 2 weeks. With a $55 consultation fee, I opted for the tablets. She said he'd also need anti inflammatory and pain relief which the cat showed no signs of been in pain and wasn't bothered by his eye.she then left and came back with 2 injection 1 of antibiotics 1 of anti inflammatory. And 3 take home packs. She said he'd need a check up in 3 days. I then went out to pay the bill and was asked for $246.10 for this superficial eye wound. Of course I paid it but I totally believe that I was had in every possible way they could.i expected that with the over charge of medications at that vet that id be looking at around $70 for the medication and then the $55 consultation fee but never did I imagine that someone was about to rob me of every cent they thought they could get out of me because they knew although I couldn't afford it, I loved my cat. Even the lady at the desk wasn't fazed by my shock at the bill I was handed. I will NEVER use Southcoast vet again as I feel they take advantage of the fact that people love their pets and we just take their word that this is what their pet needs. I'm feeling so disappointed and totally ripped off but believe me I've learnt my lesson. I was told that I would get a discount on my next visit in 3 days to get him checked. Of course I cancelled that visit. With my concession card I received a discount of $6 for my $252 bill. Wow !!! I've had many of my pets to vets when needed but never have I ever felt so ripped off. No cost except the antibiotics was explained to me. It was just tacked on as an expectation! I will be a lot more careful when thinking my pet may need a vet. Read Less

Terrible, if you have small animals please don't go here at all. I was told on the phone that they have knowledge with small animals (mice, rats, rabbits, etc) - they don't. All staff except one nurse had poor customer skills and I waited an hour as they "forgot where I was in line". The vet barely wanted to touch my pet and her first line was "How is the (animal)?". The vet didn't know anything about my pets illness and I had to tell her what meds I needed (including dosage amounts calculated against his weight) and what the illness was - despite it being the most common illness for his species. Even then his meds were given in unsuitable containers, but by that stage I had had enough and could work with it/tranfer the meds at home. They then had the nerve to charge the full consult fee - I should have been the one charging as she helped in no way at all and was purely there to sign off on the medication.
