Thank goodness I found Bird Vet Melbourne, the professionalism, knowledge and care is next level. I was very impressed with the way Dr Phil Sacks handled, treated and thoroughly examined, one very sick Indian Ringneck ‘Bluey’. I spent decades rescuing and caring for wildlife but Bluey was the first domesticated bird I’ve foster cared for. After exhausting the local vet network (South West Victorian Region), I couldn’t find anyone who had extensive bird knowledge or who would draw bloods for testing without them using anaesthesia. I knew an avian vet with experience could, hence why I ended up at BVM. Bluey was not the slightest bit stressed while Dr Phil drew bloods and examined. Thanks Dr Phil and to all the crew at BVM. Extremely thankful and grateful for Pet Medical Crisis and the team at Bird Vet Melbourne for funding and taking care of my baby when she really needed help to remove a lump. Without PMC's help, I would never have been able to afford to get her the surgery she needed. Dr Phil is amazing, knowledgeable, caring and very professional. The team at Bird Vet Melbourne specialise in birds and are extremely passionate about being able to help sick birds in need. Highly recommended if you have a sick bird. Also recommend talking to the lovely team at Pet Medical Crisis if you have an emergency and need help funding it! Read Less

I can highly recommend Dr Phil and Dr Ruth. They are both very knowledgeable and passionate about the care they deliver. Just recently Dr Ruth saw my sick cockatiel on a Saturday morning and called me at 7pm that night to give me the very abnormal results. She was very kind, in no hurry and answered all my questions. With the treatment she prescribed, my pet bird is back to his happy self but will need ongoing care to managing his ongoing health problems. I trust her and Dr Phil to give him the best treatment. Yes one can really tell the care and attitude of the veterinary facility when one sees the back of the clinic unannounced. Bird Vet Melbourne has patient care as its highest priority!. The many bird-vet inpatients are in an environment conducive to healing. Most pets often do better in Hospital than at home. Thanks for noticing our efforts.

Front staff and Veterinary nurses were all lovely. The vet I saw however, was very arrogant and rough. The whole time I felt like he was talking down to me. My bird was distressed as he was having his claws cut and even bled, the vet showed zero care or compassion. I had to wait an hour later than my appointment time, which is fine. It would’ve been nice if those with appointments were notified of the hour long delay as I was an hour late for work as a result. Wouldn’t return here. Read Less

After one of my hens recently fell ill, I took her to the Burwood Bird and Animal Hospital for a check up. The vet performed tests and found her to have very high levels of lead (Pb) in her blood. Apparently lead is more prevalent in Melbourne backyards than people realise, and most suburban chickens go un-diagnosed. Burwood Bird and Animal Hospital is, to my knowledge, one of only two in Melbourne that test animals for lead poisoning. Following her diagnosis, they taught me to give her injections, and after a week, she was tested again and her lead levels had decreased significantly. Further, for the cost of one consultation, they offered to test all of my hens. I am now in the process of having my yard tested to get this issue rectified, but I wanted to write this review (a) to promote the good and important work of Burwood Bird and Animal Hospital, and (b) encourage other suburban chicken owners to get their hens tested. HI Nancee, Please note we are always trying to improve. Just like you we want the best for your pet Bird both in terms of Veterinary care, toys etc I, as a bird vet, i found that it took me years to be really comfortable with handling birds. We at Bird Vet Melbourne have a dedicated nurse that carefully choses and selects the bird toys and what to stock. Many bird toys are tested on our own pet birds before we recommend them., Many clients rely on us for safe, good value bird toys, bird food, avian medications and Parrot pellets. What could we have done, and improved to have had you Nancee less disappointed, and happy with us. We would really appreciate constructive criticism. thanks Dr Phil

Chicken socialization and training classes were a success. The aim of the classes, to show that the chicken can make a great pets and companions. Chickens are clever and can be trained, like we do with dogs in puppy classes. By learning basic training, the human - chicken - human bond is forged , and we see the beautiful little 'soul" these birds have. They enjoy being rewarded for an activoty, and being in the sun and life, as opposed to most of their species in small cages in factories. Read Less

This is the best avian vet I have been to! Dr Phil is very knowledgeable and saved my cockatiels life. My cockatiel had ingested fibres from bird toys (rope perches, toys with tassels) and they had become stuck in his crop, which was killing him. People need to know about the dangers of bird toys as many of them are dangerous because of these fibres that cause fibre obstructions in the crop. These toys look bright and colourful and are marketed for birds but they are deadly.... And unfortunately it’s only avian/bird vets who understand how to diagnose and treat these fibre obstructions. Because my bird was misdiagnosed by two different vets who didn’t know what was wrong with him. Dr Phil performed life saving surgery on my cockatiel and I am so grateful for his care. My cockatiel has made a full recovery and now enjoys eating pellets, corn and spinach and no bird toy fibres!! Thank you so much Dr Phil! See More Read Less

I recently spent a week doing placement at this clinic and I thought both practising vets (Phil and Esther) were extremely knowledgeable about avian medicine and lovely vets all-round. Quite a few reviews comment on the price of treatment at the clinic, however, if you compare the cost of treatments here with other clinics, you'll find it's quite reasonable, if not cheaper. Phil, Ester and the other staff genuinely care about the well-being of their patients: Hospital patients are given the largest cage possible with tons of toys and perches, hand-fed three times a day, frequently monitored, and kept at an incubated temperature of 25 degrees. I don't know why you would take your little feather-baby elsewhere when there are such high standards of avian care available here! Read Less

//EDIT - My previous review was overly harsh according to Dr. Phil. I had a good talk with Dr. Phil and he made me realize that he is a person who does what he can for wildlife and companion animals. The bill was lower than I remembered ($100) and that included the examination of the birds leg as well as an oral anti-inflammatory and rub-on medicine. Apparently I had a budget constraint, hence why no x-ray was done, neither was a health check as the injured leg was seen as the more important matter - I still would have liked a basic health check to have been done (as that was another thing it was booked in for); but overall, after a short talk with Dr. Phil, I can see he does his job to help animals as best he can - as I'm sure the rest of the veterinary clinic does, sorry for the harsh words I guess I was still a bit upset about losing a parrot (even though it was about 2 years ago). We wouldn't have either of our birds if it weren't for this wonderfully proactive and progressive clinic. Our cockatiel, Nuno, was laying eggs excessively, leading to a prolapsed uterus which nearly saw her die. She also became incredibly violent when nesting, attacking anyone who came into the same room as her. When she prolapsed she fell very ill. Nearing her death, we took our chances with this clinic, where they operated to rectify her prolapse and also started hormone therapy (injections given about once a ear) to reduce egg production and prevent violent tendencies. Because of Dr. Phil's avian surgical expertise and the remarkable care of the nursing team, Nuno is still with us -- nearly 3 years later -- and happily flys about, eats well and continues to pester her mate. She lays only a handful of eggs each year, and, though she keeps a watchful eye, does not resort to violent attacks. Dr. Phil was also sure to tell us Nuno's realistic chances of making it through the surgery and allowed for us to visit while in post-operative care. If you're looking for a clinic that will tell you what you want -- rather than the facts -- don't go here. They'll give it to you straight, and though it may come across as abrupt, they're doing exactly what they're meant to. If you want an expert, make an appointment with them. Read Less

Chickens are clever and can be trained, like we do with dogs in puppy classes.

Read Less
