MY RECOMMENDATION AND ADVICE WOULD BE TO NEVER USE THIS SERVICE IF YOU LOVE YOUR ANIMAL! Communication is virtually non existent. Attempted to charge almost $1000 for testing for a condition that had already been confirmed with ultrasound and couldn’t be treated due to comorbidities anyway. Animal lost over 1 kg of weight in their “care” and was repeatedly loaded up with opioids without advice or consent (I allege to keep her quiet), then advising that she was in pain for days despite no record of pain ever existing and staff specifically advising she had experienced no pain. Hadn’t advised about a condition that was known to them from last year, found out by chance in a conversation with the vet. Vets constantly change and no one takes ownership of your animal, it’s condition, tests or results, in fact one of the Vets Dr Ratnayake didn’t even know what my dog was there for when speaking to me, nor did she know the sex of my animal, lies about administering drugs and looks to have continued working on my animal after I was assured my animal would be removed from her care. I consider this practice to be extremely dangerous and unethical and anyone with issues similar to this needs to lodge formal complaints with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria. https://www.vetboard.vic.gov.au/VPRBV/VPRBV/Complaints.aspx?hkey=a03d1895-4bd9-46f0-9d35-f80def80ca9b I’ve had my animal for almost 16 years and I’ve never experienced such deception, lies, dismal communication, threats of RSPCA involvement etc. I had to threaten to call the police in order to have my animal released to take her to a reputable Vet. I recently brought my dog in for lump in his nose which was making it hard to breath they gave me meds which for a while but being old and lump being aggressive wasn't much that could be done. I made the very difficult decision to have my beautiful dog euthanized and apart from a long wait which honestly stemmed from them wanting to give me time with Kain and generaly being busy with other patients they made this process as easy and respectful as they could given the situation. Both the nurses and get were both super caring and understanding and help my beautiful dog pass with as little pain as possible as if he just drifted off to sleep. I can't thank than enough for helping in this most heartbreaking situation and can't praise than enough for their professionalism. Read Less

We had a little bit of an emergency recently with our tiny trouble maker, our dog had gotten something stuck in her mouth & it was around 9 pm so no vets in our area were open, we will forever be greatful to the Vet & staff at this clinic, Rosie was in so much pain she couldn’t close her mouth or walk properly, I called ahead & they told us to bring her in, accepted her straight away & treated her, she is happy and healthy now, we found out the next day when it was time for her walk that Rosie had got a hold of her harness & leash & was chewing on it, a piece of plastic from the harness had gotten stuck in her mouth, that little thing that clicks when you put the harness on the dog, I never thought that could even be a danger to a dog.... anyway highly recommend this place, great staff & service. One star is generous. People go to your local vet! I traveled a long way to them after seeing a local which I thought was expensive until I went to Lott smith, not only are they more expensive, they were rough with my animal and told me to take him home and come back in 2 WEEKS for the surgery!!!! He had a 10+cm open wound from the base of his tail!!!! I rang them before going there, gave them all the information from the vet, and was given an emergency appointment, when I got there they said they are busy come back in two weeks. Why make the appointment and distress an injured animal!!! They never gave me a bill as I left totally appalled, no bill in the mail, no phone call. But I did get mail from there debt collector! What a joke, you shouldn't be a practicing vet clinic OR a charity organisation! My cat couldn't wait, my vet was horrified at their 1/ poor treatment, 2/ medical incompetence & 3/ over priced. Recently had to take my cat there who required emergency surgery. I had been turned down at CARE n Collingwood for not having the 50% of the $4500 they quoted me for the procedure and care. So arrived at Lort Smith with a highly stressed cat that still had an IV stuck in his arm from the Vet earlier and I was in shock. Staff were amazing. They took the cat in right away and also looked after me, calming me down and offering me a great repayment plan. I felt that they cared about the animal more than the money, which is assuring. and it felt that the staff, that I dealt with at least, had great emergency management skills for stressed out pet owners. Forget CARE - go to Lort Smith. Also, the whole surgery and care cost $2600 at Lort Smith. Half of the amount that CARE asked for. Thanks Lort Smith staff!! xx Read Less

Very disorganised triage and care for injured pet. Waited two days to be treated when I could of had him seen by his regular vet earlier if I'd known. I'd strongly suggest you consider whether you can visit your usual veterinary clinic or another emergency veterinary clinic ahead of the Lort Smith. While I'm certain some staff work very hard, I'm concerned the lack of transparency, miscommunication and lack of consideration to clinical risks in respect of certain injuries may impede an animals recovery, if not make it worse. Tragically I thought this centre was a leading centre for animal trauma but my experience of this is leading me to reconsider this perspective. In the end threatening to refer to the VPRB for misconduct and withdrawal of my pet from the hospital finally led to his procedure being undertaken. But I'm left wondering if what he receives in care will be of the standard required or whether it will be as substandard as his preoperative care has been. In essence? If you can wait or afford it, go elsewhere. If you can't afford it then this is likely to be the best option for you. Good luck. Read Less

Be very wary. Whilst hiding under the facade of being charitable, their financial practices are highly questionable and certainly unethical, taking advantage of people (often socially disadvantaged) during times of crisis. They are quick to report you to Dun & Bradstreet without the courtesy of a single follow up call or reminder letter when you miss a payment, but unwilling to provide you with any financial accountability or appeal on their end. I had considered donating to them as an ongoing charitable concern, but having witnessed their unconscionable financial behaviour in the lives of responsible people, cannot support them. Read Less

Exactly what you would expect from a hospital. Sometimes you have to wait because they are busy with emergency patients. My dog had extensive dental surgery and have been extremely happy with the treatment. The vet over prescribed antibiotics at initial consultation. Should have only given him enough until he had his surgery not a months worth because he ended up needing a different kind of antibiotic after surgery and I had to buy another months worth of that kind. So wasted money but the surgery ended up being cheaper than quoted so I guess it all works out in the end. Overall I feel extremely grateful I have this facility close to where I live. My cat had pancreatitis and stayed overnight for three days. It cost about $1000 which is quite reasonable compared to what I would have paid if I had gone to my local vet. I'm very happy with the service from the great staff working there and the level of care that Oliver had. Thank you to the nurses and Dr Bree for looking after him. Fantastic and Brilliant- Thankyou so much!!! The level of care and knowledge at the Lort Smith is remarkable. We had an emergency situation over the long weekend with our Labrador. We first took him to another Emergency VET hospital that was open 24 hours, as the Lort Smith was not open as yet. At this clinic we spent $700 on x-rays, and we were told that our Labrador had blockage in his intestine and would could die without a $10,000 operation. We were recommended to transfer him by that clinic to the Lort Smith, as I almost fainted when they discussed price. The Lort Smith diagnosed his issue with severe Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis not a blockage. Total cost of care including two nights hospitalisation( over a public holiday), all medications, IV and food for after home care was a total of $800. The service and level of care is awesome. Anyone who thinks the Lort Smith lacks in knowledge, expertise or is incompetent, or charge to much, needs to seriously take a look at the incompetence and expense at other Emergency Vet clinics in Victoria first! How can another veterinary clinic get it so wrong???? We had constant telephone updates twice a day, excellent service. You are the best Lort Smith!!!! Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!!!! Read Less

MONEY HUNGRY PIGS! WORST PLACE EVER! AVOID! This place is the worst place ever, they only care about money, not about the animal. Me & my partner took in a kitten who was dying, the emergency ward made us wait 1hr, when the kitten could not breathe we finally got to see a vet but it was too late. Had of the kitten seen the vet earlier it may have been alive. They saw the kitten for lass then 5 mins, offered no solution & then the lady said "please see the guy at the front", me & my partner see the guy who gives us the bill for $160! They offered no help, no medication, Nothing! Made us wait for over 1hr & then charge us for NOTHING. This place is more concerned about money, they don't care about ur animal. I saw one lady who's dog had over 30 nurofen tablets, he was made to wait over 1hr too. This place only has 1 or 2 vets working. WORST PLACE EVER! Avoid! Whether it's an emergency or just the yearly check up it's so difficult find a vet service that you can trust with your fur-babies. The Lort Smith Animal Hospital removes any doubt and all the usual stresses of visiting the vet.The waiting room is spacious, with a separate check in desk and pharmacy area. There is a secondary door entrance, to help avoid any run aways. You may feel a bit like just a number waiting in the area until your assigned vet invites your pet into the treatment room over the loud speaker. The staff here are happy and helpful, taking into consideration your pets needs and your financial situation. The staff are very open about the costs and in an emergency situation no animal is refused treatment. Been there 3x and each time they just asked you to bring your pet back and see them for the "same ailment"! My dog have been suffering from eczema for years esp during Spring and the previous Vet will normally prescribe 2 repeats of medication to treat it and it will go away. But we moved to city fringe and had to change Vet, so we came across Lort Smith. The first Vet at LS was good, she told us there is nothing much we can do apart from medication, diet, environment, etc (just like our previous regular Vet told us). The second Vet at LS rushed through the consultation as my dog had an eye blister and she refused to prescribe meds for his eczema and asked us to come back for next visit. The 3rd Vet was the worst, she convinced us to spend $400 to do the blood test only to tell us what we already know, ie, there was nothing wrong with our dog! The eczema is something very common with our dog's breed and she even told us her dog did the same thing and been scratching for years! In her consult, she forgot to prescribe us Ear Medication and when we rang the Hospital back, the Vet said we have to come in and see the Dermatologist!!! And that she cannot prescribe the meds for his Ears, which she already charged us the consultation fees the last time she saw my dog! And now they want us to spend another few hundred dollars to see the Specialist only to have him tell us there is nothing we can do!!! So becareful folks, this Hospital is all about "squeezing as much $$$ as possible out of you"!  We have decided to go back to our previous Vet in the Suburbs, they are more genuine and trustworthy there! I'll spare you the details of why I needed a cat that very day. It's too sad a story, and it doesn't end with "They're happy at a farm upstate..." The point is, I needed a cat to dry my tears. Our friend Alice had just adopted a kitten and she recommended Lort Smith. Without sparing a moment, my boyfriend suggested we adopt a cat from them, right now. Let's go. We took our time visiting with all the cats in the cattery. There were some small shy kittens, some lovely cats who came in pairs, and we took our time with them all, until we saw Indy. He pressed his face up on the glass each time we walked by. He smiled at us. It was a smile that said, "Take me home. I'm a happy cat. I just want a family to love."Who could argue with a cat whose smile said all that!Lort Smith was very organised, they had all his papers and documentation ready to go. They made the adoption process very simple and not at all expensive. $100 for a grown cat, a little more for a kitten. Indy was home not 2 hours later and immediately was a part of our home. He is a playful 12 year old and very clever. I am so happy Lort Smith was able to help us give such a lovely kitty cat a loving home. Read Less

I wanted another cat; it has been two years since my last cat died at the old age of 20. I wanted a kitten, a domestic short hair female, not white because I wear a lot of black clothes and not a tabby either like my last cat. I looked at the Lort Smith's website for kittens to adopt but I couldn't see any - adult cats, even some pedigree ones. Finally I saw that they had a young female cat and I went to see if she would be suitable. When I got to the cattery at the hospital I found that there was a whole office bouncing with kittens - they don't advertise all these kittens on the website. I spent some time with the kittens, they were running all over the office and me, climbing across my shoulders. Sitting on top of a filing cabinet was a sweet little black female kitten with white socks - she was the one for me.So I adopted her, it was $140, $40 more than if she had been an adult cat. Like all of the kittens for adoption she had been desexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped by the hospital. I was also given a new cat box to take her home in and a folder of paperwork, advice and certificates.  I named her Dignity - Diggy for short. Dignity now is settling in to her new home. Read Less

Read Less

Avoid!

Read Less
