My cat almost died.
My cat has had a history of her conditions so she needs to rely on prescribed drugs every day. When I changed to this clinic, I gave both the Vet and technician a clear instruction: the type of drug as well as the brand of the drug have to remain the same, otherwise there is a chance that my cat can react to it.
Despite all my efforts, they did not give a proper drug to my cat. When I received the drug, I noticed the bottle looked different so I asked them to confirm whether it's the same drug as the ones that she used to have from her old clinic. And of course all they did was just reassuring me that it's fine, and just the bottle looks different. As a result the change in the drug brand and type, my poor cat almost died. This was just such a traumatic experience for all of my family and of course my poor cat. We had to spend days in the emergency and all I could do was just praying for God's mercy to help her become better.
I understand that people can make mistake, but when they realize it, they should at least apologize to the party affected because of their mistake. When I called the clinic to explain the situation, the staffs who screwed up never apologized neither did she acknowledge her fault. I wonder if they would have stayed that calm and professional if the same thing happened to their own pets due to someone else's mistake.
The staffs at VCA 17th Ave Clinic may seem nice until they screw up. Don't be fooled by their smiles, and save your pet's lives by avoiding this place..
Update:
Its been 3 months and her seizure has never went away since then. This has caused many more trips to emergency and increase in her medicine dosage. Before this traumatic experience, she was seizure free for more than a year.

I have been taking my dog there for a few years now and the staff is very friendly, welcoming and professional. My dog is not stressed about going there as has been the case with other clinics. She is always greeted by the wonderful staff with hugs and treats.
Dr Hughton was amazing in diagnosing my dog and providing affordable treatment options. I have been there almost once a month over the past year and a half due to my dog's diabetes and other issues and never had any problems. Would highly recommend.

The advice is useful but not pushy. The nurses and receptionist are also very friendly. They’re attentive and polite. I would definitely continue to go here.

My dog is 8.5 years old and Dr. Evans has been his vet since he was a puppy. We were always very happy with him--he cares about the animals he treats, and he offers honest opinions and affordable options.
A couple of years ago, we moved away from the downtown area, and decided to try a vet close to our house, simply out of convenience. We instantly realized this was a mistake. We spent a fortune, and never really felt like she cared for our dog at all.
We quickly returned to Dr. Evans and will never look back. If he can save you money (while still providing the best care for your pet), he will. He has never once tried to upsell me on any of the food or other products they carry. And I always feel like my little guy is in good hands. The entire staff is all friendly, too--can't beat this place.

Dr Hughton was amazing with my dog and figured out exactly what her medical issue was. She takes her time in explaining and answering questions and calls me back whenever I can with a question. She also tries to keep the cost at a minimum and understands the financial stress a pet owner with no insurance goes through when your dog is diagnosed with diabetes. My dog is not afraid of going into the clinic so she must feel very comfortable with Dr Hughton and the staff despite all the needles and tests she had to go through which is amazing.
Staff is very friendly and efficient.
I wish they had a boarding facility as I would feel extremely comfortable leaving my dog in their care while I am away.

We have a cat and a puppy. We'd tried other vets and hadn't been happy with how we or our pets were treated. We saw the difference at 17th ave animal hospital right away. Dr. Sean Evans is incredibly kind and knowledgeable. He explained everything to us and gave us all the options. We definitely felt like our animals were being treated like family. I can't express how happy we've been here. This is definitely where we'll be going from now on.

We've been to several vet clinics over the years, and I can honestly say we've never met a vet as compassionate, honest and knowledgeable as Dr. Evans. He and his team have provided exceptional care and advice for our cats and dog, and I can't imagine going anywhere else. I would recommend them to everyone I know - if you want someone who doesn't treat you and your pet like a number (but who actually remembers you from visit to visit), then this is the place to go in Calgary.

I had to bring my coughing kitty in to have her checked out and everyone was really great. I called and spoke to the front desk lady who was very sweet and got my cat in a couple hours later. When I came in the vet was very thorough and explained everything to me, writing things down and giving me a few courses of action. Although we couldn't figure out the problem right away I still left with some possible solutions. The front desk girls were very nice and explained what would need to be done if it wasn't resolved.Two days later Dr. Sidhu (I think? He was a locum vet) called me to ask how my kitty was doing - so sweet! I called the office a few days later as well to ask a few more questions, and the girls were so helpful.A couple weeks later I realized I needed to have them fill out a form to send away to my pet insurance company and the girls up front said they would handle to whole thing - reprinting my receipts, having the vet fill out the form, and faxing it to my insurance company for me. I was very impressed.Shortly after, I had to bring my kitty BACK to the hospital as she was very sick again. Dr. Ames was AMAZING. She was extremely thorough and made us feel as though our girl was her number one priority. We absolutely loved her, she is our regular vet now for sure!Thanks 17th avenue pet hospital! :)

Dr Evans is excellent, however the front desk lady is rude and uncooth. My second bad experience in only three months. TIme to find another clinic, and there are many good ones. My dog was chocking and all she said is no doctor, go somewhere else. The time before I came back as my dog got so sick on Medi Cam. Again, no compassion. Just that no other dog has that issue until the neurologist told me to immediately discontinue this medication as it would cause kidney failure. Avoid this place!!!

Dr. Sean Evans was our vet for almost 2 years. We have only switched because we are now on the opposite end of the city. Dr. Evans was always very good with our dog. He did 2 surgeries on our dog (cherry-eye and neuter) and we never had any complications. Our appointments always went wonderful and I felt communicated to well. Although we have had a bad experience with another AVC clinic, this one never felt money-hungry like their reputation. I was never left waiting long for the appointment to start. At the end of each appointment they give a great summary of your dog's health and the appointment including any care instructions and drug information. A great tool for tracking your pet's health in your own files.

I have brought my dog here multiple times and have always had a great experience. The front desk staff is friendly and professional, and Dr. Ratcliff is caring and personable. I have never felt rushed during my appointments and am confident that I am being provided with the best information possible. I will definitely continue to take my dog to 17th Ave and will recommend them to anyone who lives in the area.

I find the services here amazing. The people are all so friendly and you can tell they like animals. The doctors are thorough and give you an opportunity to ask a lot of questions. The advice is useful but not pushy. The nurses and receptionist are also very friendly. They’re attentive and polite. I would definitely continue to go here.

My dog is 8.5 years old and Dr. Evans has been his vet since he was a puppy. We were always very happy with him--he cares about the animals he treats, and he offers honest opinions and affordable options.
A couple of years ago, we moved away from the downtown area, and decided to try a vet close to our house, simply out of convenience. We instantly realized this was a mistake. We spent a fortune, and never really felt like she cared for our dog at all.
We quickly returned to Dr. Evans and will never look back. If he can save you money (while still providing the best care for your pet), he will. He has never once tried to upsell me on any of the food or other products they carry. And I always feel like my little guy is in good hands. The entire staff is all friendly, too--can't beat this place.

Dr Hughton was amazing with my dog and figured out exactly what her medical issue was. She takes her time in explaining and answering questions and calls me back whenever I can with a question. She also tries to keep the cost at a minimum and understands the financial stress a pet owner with no insurance goes through when your dog is diagnosed with diabetes. My dog is not afraid of going into the clinic so she must feel very comfortable with Dr Hughton and the staff despite all the needles and tests she had to go through which is amazing.
Staff is very friendly and efficient.
I wish they had a boarding facility as I would feel extremely comfortable leaving my dog in their care while I am away.

We have been going to this vet for 5 years. Dr. Evans has always been great and has always taken the time to discuss our care options for health concerns, food options and to discuss behaviour issues. All the staff are friendly and you can tell that they care for animals and want the best for them.
I also love their online portal where you can track when your pet is due for a visit.

I love that in the summer they get the pools out for the dogs to play in. You can see in the daily photos your dog is having a ton of fun. Also comforting to know a respected Vet is attached to the day care should any issues arise :)

My dog was diagnosed with bone cancer and Dr. Evans called to check up at different times to see how we were both doing and to answer the questions I had during this time. I highly recommend the clinic. The veterinarians are knowledgeable, provide various options, are caring and professional. The clinic itself is clean and the support staff very friendly. We have a cat and a puppy. We'd tried other vets and hadn't been happy with how we or our pets were treated. We saw the difference at 17th ave animal hospital right away. Dr. Sean Evans is incredibly kind and knowledgeable. He explained everything to us and gave us all the options. We definitely felt like our animals were being treated like family. I can't express how happy we've been here. This is definitely where we'll be going from now on.

They are super friendly and compassionate. You can tell everyone in the office is an animal lover. The extended office hours are also convenient for fitting different schedules.

We've been to several vet clinics over the years, and I can honestly say we've never met a vet as compassionate, honest and knowledgeable as Dr. Evans. He and his team have provided exceptional care and advice for our cats and dog, and I can't imagine going anywhere else. I would recommend them to everyone I know - if you want someone who doesn't treat you and your pet like a number (but who actually remembers you from visit to visit), then this is the place to go in Calgary.

I had to bring my coughing kitty in to have her checked out and everyone was really great. I called and spoke to the front desk lady who was very sweet and got my cat in a couple hours later. When I came in the vet was very thorough and explained everything to me, writing things down and giving me a few courses of action. Although we couldn't figure out the problem right away I still left with some possible solutions. The front desk girls were very nice and explained what would need to be done if it wasn't resolved.Two days later Dr. Sidhu (I think? He was a locum vet) called me to ask how my kitty was doing - so sweet! I called the office a few days later as well to ask a few more questions, and the girls were so helpful.A couple weeks later I realized I needed to have them fill out a form to send away to my pet insurance company and the girls up front said they would handle to whole thing - reprinting my receipts, having the vet fill out the form, and faxing it to my insurance company for me. I was very impressed.Shortly after, I had to bring my kitty BACK to the hospital as she was very sick again. Dr. Ames was AMAZING. She was extremely thorough and made us feel as though our girl was her number one priority. We absolutely loved her, she is our regular vet now for sure!Thanks 17th avenue pet hospital! :)

Dr Evans is excellent, however the front desk lady is rude and uncooth. My second bad experience in only three months. TIme to find another clinic, and there are many good ones. My dog was chocking and all she said is no doctor, go somewhere else. The time before I came back as my dog got so sick on Medi Cam. Again, no compassion. Just that no other dog has that issue until the neurologist told me to immediately discontinue this medication as it would cause kidney failure. Avoid this place!!!

Dr. Sean Evans was our vet for almost 2 years. We have only switched because we are now on the opposite end of the city. Dr. Evans was always very good with our dog. He did 2 surgeries on our dog (cherry-eye and neuter) and we never had any complications. Our appointments always went wonderful and I felt communicated to well. Although we have had a bad experience with another AVC clinic, this one never felt money-hungry like their reputation. I was never left waiting long for the appointment to start. At the end of each appointment they give a great summary of your dog's health and the appointment including any care instructions and drug information. A great tool for tracking your pet's health in your own files.
