What you pay for a procedure is 3x the cost of going an hour away to any other place who care about the animals more than the money. The staff have been unprofessional when there and have also been awful on the phone.
I brought in a 43 pound snake to get meds because sadly the next available vet was a 4 hour trip away, and we didn’t mind using the local clinic as Dr Howse has an interest in reptiles and can get us the meds needed saving the shelter funding, although for diagnosis she does not know, we are sent elsewhere and still charged for the visit to Rocky. We do not take unknown illnesses to the vet here due to that. The staff behind the desk decided to make comments to our face of “how many cats a day does that thing eat?” While we were in the vet room itself, we were then stuck listening to the staff members behind the door making awful comments about the snake, and trying to jump scare each other when they were looking in to our little room with a distressed and sick animal. While these animals are not everyone’s favorite, there is a level a professionalism expected when entering a business that we did not experience, and a lack of respect for the animal we were paying well to have seen.
We had an animal come in at midnight on a Fri, of which we immediately called the emerg line for the clinic when we found out at 8pm, we received a voice mail and left a message expressing the urgency the situation hoping to get a call back by midnight. When we called again, voice mail and no response from the line. When we finally did get a hold of the on call for after hours, we were told to continue the treatments we had started and that we would receive a call Monday for when to come in. We never received that call. We had to give them a call around 1pm on Monday to find out what was going on! When we brought the animal in Dr Howse did her best to treat the animal but once again we were subject to hearing staff make comments. It was NOT Dr Howse who was making these comments, she has genuine care for these animals. While normally we would go to another vet given the past experiences, we were specially asked by the people handling the cruelty case to visit here. After 4 hours and $300 later, we brought home a sedated animal. 19 hours after the anesthesia had been administered the animal still had not come out of it. As I was concerned I attempted to call the vet again, as when we were leaving we were told to call if anything came up. We did, and were greeted by a very rude front end staff member who would not say anything but “Dr Howse is in appointments all day”, I explained that the animal was not out of anesthesia 19 hours after she was put under, and each time I was told “she’s busy and will call back” We never did get a call back. I ended up calling Currents vet in Edmonton who was far more interested in helping. While trying to explain this was an emergency to the Rocky Rapids staff member I was asked for my number then promptly hung up on while trying to stress this is a serious issue we need to speak with her even briefly. I guess they got the money now don’t care.
A few years back we had brought a little one in as "save the 4 hour trip, we just need antibiotics" we got to watch as a vet shoved a cotton sided Q-tip into a baby snakes mouth, a snake with re curved teeth! We have had to hear how snakes who are the proper body shape are severely overweight, and had to explain to the staff there (vet included) that boas are viviparous, meaning live birth, not eggs, but we were told we were wrong, and they were right about a boa laying eggs.
We were told to put an animal to sleep without giving it a fighting chance. We contacted a few other vets who gave the little gecko a much better outcome and after some treatment, managed to live another two years before an unrelated condition took him.
