Worst experience with this vet!! The family Yorkie has gone here since he was a baby, and is now 7. Long story short, they miss diagnosed him so poorly last week that the medication they put him on to treat his false condition, ended up putting the real problem of anemia- way over the edge to the point of almost fatality! Last week during the first check up of concern, they didn't do any blood work, and jumped to the conclusion that it was heart failure (as that is a common Yorkie genetic disorder). This morning, he was brought into Ellerslie and they asked to keep him for overnight care to keep an eye. Having no updates all day, we called 30 min before closing at 6, and they said to come right away. At this point, the vet informed us that they were on "babysitting mode" and didn't actually inspect him till 30 minutes prior, when she had noticed his white gums. We then rushed him to emergency at Guardian, where he is now having blood transfusions- with hopes and prayers that his body will accept the new blood having been at 5% of the required iron levels. Find a vet that actually cares about its patients, and that isn't a narrow minded person who jumps to conclusions! Read Less

I have been taking my Schnorkie (Schnauzer Yorkie) here since his initial set of shots 3 years ago. During our first visit we met with the office manager who took us on a tour of the facility, we got to see the emergency room, treatment areas, xray lab and so on. It was very cool to see, and something I have not been able to experience at other vet offices. Any staff I have dealt with from the receptionist, to nurses to the actual vet are always friendly and helpful. I will admit, I have called in or shown up with some dumb questions and they always have answers. Ellerslie Pet Hospital makes you and your pet feel welcome and special - as evident in the personalized, handmade welcome card we received after our first visit. They don't call when they say they will, I always have to call back. I'm still waiting on a blood work call they said they would call last night. I trust them with their expertise and they're very friendly and caring people but when I brought my dog in when she was very sick (diagnosed with Addison's Disease) the vet was kind of scatter brained and my dog also has a thyroid condition and I told her this and then when I came to pick her up a couple days later when they said she wasn't perking up, i mentioned well she has hasn't had her thyroid pils in a week and then they vet said "oh ya i forgot she had hypothyroidism" i'm not really sure why it wasn't recorded or anything and kind of expected they'd be giving them to her. Not like it's life threatening or anything but unprofessional. From my experience I recommend people going to small town vets because they're cheaper instead of the city. Read Less

The doctors here really care about your animals. They understand that pets are part of your family and treat them as such. One of the doctors even cried with me over the loss of one of my cats. My only criticism would be that they are more expensive than other veterinarians, but you get what you pay for. They are open 7 days a week and most evenings. Also Dr. Kate who owns the clinic with her husband is certified to read blood panels and do cancer screenings. To top it off all of the necessary equipment is on site. I would not recommend this clinic unless you like paying between two to four times more than other clinics. We took our pets here for a couple of years while we were living in Summerside, and when we moved, and started taking our pets to a different clinic we realized how much more expensive. That's when we started to do our research. To get our cat neutered with all of his shots he needed was just shy of $800 at Ellerslie Pet Hospital. We later realized it should have been closer to $400. They charged us over $150 for blood work for our dog, which they told us he needed every 4 weeks. When we took him to an emergency clinic in the middle of the night, we were charged $65, our vet charges $35, neither of which could understand why he would need such excessive appointments. I feel very taken advantage of, we are not wealthy people. I wonder if they do this to everyone, or seen an opening, and pounced on how much we love our pets and just took us for everything they could. Read Less

My fiancée and I were evacuated from Fort McMurray with our two dogs. We are blessed to have friends in Calgary to stay with, but unfortunately my dogs couldn't stay as well. I found a kennel to take them until we are able to regroup- but found out that my one dog Jaxon, was behind on his kennel necessary shots by three weeks. I called Doug at ellerslie pet hospital and was told to come down- no questions asked!! They are not my usual vet and have never seen my boys before. We were amazed that they would on so short notice but said that we had to drive up from Calgary. The vet Kate stayed late so we could still get in there. ON A SATURDAY!!! We lucky had our vet records to provide, although Doug said that we can work around that if needed to ensure my boys could get what they needed. After seeing Kate, we decided that we should also give our two dogs dewormer just incase as they were around so many other dogs. My fiancée and I agreed, but I was a little hesitant as due to the evacuation, and that we aren't sure when and where our next pay check was coming from. When we went to pay our bill, the owner Doug smiled at me and said they would take care of it. I. Did. Not. Expect. That! I still tried to pay for something but the staff wouldn't let me and said it was their pleasure to help. That's about the time that I just started crying. (Happy tears of course!) The generosity and compassion that you have all shown us unparalleled. I am so great full for you and what you've done for us. They also helped calm my dogs and gave them so many treats that the boys didn't want to leave! I have no words for how truly touched and thankful I am. Let's begin this by saying, I shouldn't have visited this clinic. I have a fantastic vet, and she has set a really high standard. However, I needed a second opinion on a very expensive canine dental procedure. I thought that because a friend had gotten a quote at this clinic for a similar procedure at a much lower cost, that a free dental exam couldn't hurt. We arrived a little early for our appointment and there wasn't much going on. The office was clean and quiet. The had lilies as a flower arrangement on the desk, which I found strange. Animals are allergic to them and for scent sensitive people lilies are the worst. The staff were pleasant and provided treats for our dog. Though, they weren't as professional as other veterinary staff I've interacted with. I had known from the outset that our appointment would be with a Veterinary Technician but I expected to be present during the exam. I've never had a vet examine my pet, outside of surgical procedures, without me being there. I felt bad for my little guy, as he's pretty anxious and wouldn't be happy with being separated from us in a new environment. Not an overly big deal, but it made us uncomfortable. The real problem began when a gentleman came out of the back and asked if that was our critter back there. He proceeded to introduce himself as a the owner of the clinic and the husband of one of the vets. He then decided to explain what dental surgery for our dog would look like and why we should choose to bring our dog there. He bashed our vet, and the clinic saying that their they range in the quote was too large and they didn't know how to do their jobs. He boasted about not having looked at the guidelines for vet costs in Alberta in several years and that a clinic that uses them shouldn't be in business. He told us that the quote we had received from our vet was outrageous and that his clinic wouldn't be anywhere close to that much. Ultimately it felt like a sales pitch. He told us that his wife had received superior training in the field of veterinary dental medicine and that they'd travelled all over the world learning new and sometimes experimental procedures. Which, I think he thought would be a selling point, but it wasn't. If they're just getting into this field, it screams of lack of experience, not to mention that I don't want experimental procedures being used on my dog.  Then, the quote arrives, and it's higher than the low end range of our original quote from our vet. He then proceeds to justify costs and say that is the worst case scenario. After that, he told us they might be able to lower the quote once his wife looked at the information. I'm not sure that the quote was accurate, given that a vet never examined our dog.He gave us a tour and showed us the clinic. He is proud it and that shows. The clinic is generally clean but I found it weird that he would take us into the OR and XRay room. The problem came in when we visited the dog run, which didn't seem to be sanitized and the odour was unpleasant. The biggest boasting point was that his wife had her Masters of Veterinary science and had just purchased some really expensive machinery to aid her in her pathology speciality. I though that her speciality was dentistry? Apparently not.I ended up confused, never spoke to a vet, and feeling like a used car salesman was trying to sell me a beater that had serious issues but would run okay for 50 km. Needless to say, I'd stay away. Take your pet to a different clinic. Read Less

Where do I even begin to start, in regards to writing a review about Ellerslie Pet Hospital?First let me give you the back story, to what lead us to find Dr. Kewish and the staff at this facility. My wife and I moved to Edmonton from Toronto, precisely a year ago. We brought with us our dog, Cricket, a Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix. She is now two years old, however for an entire year we fought a never-ending battle. When we got her she was diagnosed with giardia, so we worked on that with a special brand of food to firm up her stool.  Soon after she had an ear infection, which we got medication for via our vet in Toronto. Soon after Cricket started losing ALL her fur and was consistently gnawing and scratching at herself. At numerous times we thought she was going to die/we thought we should just put her down. We tried everything imaginable. Special shampoos, medications, fancy probiotics.  Back in Toronto every vet we talked to, wanted THOUSANDS of dollars for tests (cytology, histology, etc).  Unfortunately in Toronto, the average person does not have that kind of money, even though the vets love to make you feel like garbage and a poor pet-parent for not unconditionally paying their obscene prices. When we came to Edmonton we heard about a vet called Park West, it was close by and got positive reviews. We took her there, had her spayed there, etc. Unfortunately, although they were nice and helpful, Cricket just did not get any better.A friend of a friend STRONGLY urged me to take Cricket to Dr. Kewish. I put it off for awhile, as Ellerslie Pet Hospital is a fairly long drive away, roughly 30-40mins.  The reviews I read were all fairly decent, some were mixed in nature. Plus we had been burned before by visiting vets, I didn't want to haul Cricket and ourselves over there for nothing. This friend of a friend got Dr. Kewish to actually call and speak with me. At this point we were seeing improvement by switching to raw alpaca patties and a wet vegetarian formula. Dr. Kewish was straight up and honest from the very start, she admitted that she was merely a vet and not a miracle worker, like my friend talked her up to be. So, after talking with her, I decided it was worth a shot. When we arrived to the clinic we were greeted by a VERY friendly staff. The front-end is a standard/typical vet set up. We met with Dr. Kewish and her husband, both were amazingly friendly. We had our "meet and greet" with Dr. Kewish and the most ironic twist is, she basically said word for word what we were telling previous vets. I LOVE that we were right, and I LOVED the enthusiasm Dr. Kewish gave when we confirmed the questions she asked. Dr. Kewish also very carefully laid out the various pathways and the results that could happen under each factor. We ended the visit with Dr. Kewish's husband giving us a tour of the facility, which was amazing to see. It was also great to hear that Dr. Kewish was the ONLY clinical pathologist, in all of Alberta! The following week we scheduled Cricket for a skin biopsy test, as we all felt it was the most ideal way to determine what the underlying problem was.  They were nice enough to let Cricket stay overnight, so they could do the procedure in the morning, as well as hold onto her until we got there after work. When we got there we were given medication for her ear infection, yeast infection as well as antibiotics for the biopsy wounds.  It has now been just over a week since the procedure and our dog is looking and acting like a completely new dog!!!!!! Dr. Kewish also gave us the results of the biopsy procedure and medication that will better address our dogs problems. She is VERY confident that with this treatment, our dog will gain all her fur back and begin to look as she acts, amazing.I cannot recommend Dr. Kewish and Ellerslie Pet Hospital enough. They have given us our little baby back and we will forever be grateful for everything they have done.If you're in need of a vet, for any reason. Please look no further than Dr. Kewish and Ellerslie Pet Hospital. No matter where you live in the Edmonton area, its suburbs, etc. Schedule and appointment with this facility ASAP! Read Less

So happy to have found any regular vet open on Sunday and not have to pay emergency fees, and beyond delighted with the quality of service and the facility.  The vet came to meet us in the waiting room, explained all the options for testing and treatment, took extremely detailed notes about the history and observations I shared, and I had my cat tested (they have extensive lab capabilites), treated and sent home all in one day. My cat is 20 years old and while very reactive, not very demonstrative. She was treated with great gentle care and respect, and the vet kept track of her anxiety levels with a hand over her heart.  Really I couldn't be happier.  My only regret is that I didn't get a card for the vet who treated my cat (I thought her name would be on the bill/care instructions). and my only wish is that they weren't literally all the way across town from me.  Definitely worth the trip, though! I was looking for a new vet for my cat and noticed this animal hospital as we were driving by on our way home. We looked it up online and the website was really easy to use and very proffessional, the opening hours are great too - how many pet hospitals are open til 8pm on a week night and open Saturday and Sunday for REGULAR appointments! When I called to book an appointment the lady I spoke to was very proffessional and helpful and got us booked in the next day.The pet hospital was REALLY easy to find and had good parking. When we walked in it was like no other vererinarians ive been to! It was immaculatly clean - literally no pet hair anywhere! There was relaxing music playing and the place looked really organised! We we're greeted by Doug, one of the owners who told us it was his day off (but that he's there everyday so doesn't really get a day off!) and he checked us in and took some details. He was VERY friendly and made us feel at ease.A few minutes later we were greeted by Dr Emma Park who took us into the examination room. The examination room was clean and already had a blanket waiting for our cat to sit on (instead of the usual cold metal table). She was very proffessional, listened to our concerns and answered all our questions. She also asked alot of questions about our cat and genuinely seemed to care! Our cat seemed to like her too - she behaved and didnt give her the death stare so Im assuming she was happy! We finished up out front with Dr Park and were then given a tour of the office by Doug. He is obviously very proud of the place and he should be - not many places will offer to show you around! We saw the treatment rooms at the back, the xray room, the boarding kennels - EVERYTHING. It was all clean and sterilised. He must be very confident in this place to offer to show people the back and that gave us even more confidence in him and in the hospital. From start to finish everyone we dealt with was proffessional, helpful, informative, friendly and efficient. We had a really great expereince and wouldn't hesitate to go back and recommend this place to everyone, although if you ask my cat im sure she will tell you she's more than happy to wait another year before she goes back!5 STARS PLUS!!!EDITED TO ADD: we also got a phonecall one week after our appointment to check that our cat was ok, and we received a handmade card in the post signed by all the staff thanking us for using them and inviting us to come again!!WISH I COULD GIVE THEM EVEN MORE STARS!!! Read Less

Read Less

Absolutely amazing. After a major health disaster at another clinic I came to Ellerslie Pet Hospital. My appointment was at 5:30 pm they close at 9. By 7pm they were able to do an entire comprehensive urine analysis, blood work, nail trim, expression of anal glands, IV fluid, anti nausea shot and the first dose of antibiotics. My 7lb chihuahua had an infection in his kidneys in which the previous vet didn't catch. I am so very grateful for the amount of care and precision they took with their diagnosis. The vet explained all details to me and how to administer the antibiotics. She explained everything and was very open to answering all my questions and concerns. I am a student and the first health problem put a huge financial hit on me, Ellerslie was extremely accommodating with the bill. I will never go to another vet again. Read Less

Read Less

We picked this vet for our goldendoodle puppy based on reading various reviews, and we have been very pleased! The reception staff are always very friendly and professional.  Our puppy doesn't mind coming to the vet because of the treats and love she gets from the reception staff and vets themselves.  After our very first visit, we were sent a very cute welcome card which was signed by staff and our vet in the mail, which I thought was a really nice touch.I really appreciate that they are open 7 days a week, and have after 5 pm appointments available.  They are also great at touching base with you about concerns after appointments.  We had a scare with our puppy on a Sunday and weren't able to get a last minute appointment and therefore had to take her to a pet hospital;  the staff at Ellerslie Pet Hospital called us on Monday after they received notice from the pet hospital that we had been in.  They also called us two days after our pup's vaccinations to make sure she hadn't experienced any adverse reactions.Ellerslie Pet Hospital is clean and inviting.  I would highly recommend this vet for all your pet's needs if you are on the hunt for one.
