Dr. Muzyka is a wonderful vet: kind, compassionate, and very knowledgeable. She cared for our dog from his first vet appt to his last appt at 19 years old. As much as she cares for animals, she also cares for their owners during difficult times. There was no one else we would have trusted at the end of his life. She's also been our go-to vet for our various Guinea pigs through the years - again, very knowledgeable! Her caring and thoughtful attitude is shared by the entire staff as well, especially Mel, one of the techs. I wouldn't bring my animals anywhere else. Read Less

The Veterinarians are passionate and truly care about the animals they treat, and their owners. They put their patients before the cost of their treatments. The staff are friendly and informative. This office works as a team. I'd rather have a team of professionals looking after my beloved "pet" that is like my child, than a Vet that's all in for the money. This vet clinic use to be good, but things have changed. We have been going here for about 4-5 years, but we will never go back.6 days after we were told that my ten year old dog was in great health for his age, he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and he was critical. I now don't have my dog and I'm getting my other dog re-checked because Dr Pettifor's clean bill of health means nothing. Read Less

I am very disappointed with the results of bringing my lizard into the Ottewell animal clinic. The staff was very nice and the vet who had been looking at my lizard was also a very kind lady. However, she had no idea what was wrong with him, and seemed to know little about the type of lizard I had brought in. She had told me to use CLAVAMOX orally for my reptile after 2 weeks he still wasn't getting better (infected skin) so she made me put him on Baytril. After 1 week of both baytril and clavamox he became him a lot worse. Last night I took him into an emergency vet with a reptile specialist. She immediately told me that CLAVAMOX has NOT been proven or even really tested on reptiles with successful results regarding absorption. She also told me that BAYTRIL is exteremly high and can actually cause more damage than good in a reptile. The vet at Ottewell had only prescribed me 2 of the worst medications for helping my reptile. . Now he is worse. His new vet actually took stool samples and wanted to do skin testing where as the Ottewell vet only went on her first thought and prescribed medication not even fit for my reptile. He could've died if I continued seeing that vet. Atleast now he has cream for his hands and proper medication. I will not be returning to Ottewell especially regarding reptiles. Read Less

Excellent care for all of my animals! They really took the care and time to communicate via email when I was confused about a procedure they recommended for one of my animals. My concerns were validated and fears diminished. Quick service in requesting files when we sadly had to switch vets, and that was only because we moved out of province. Highly recommended! Read Less

Took the critters to Ottewell vet. Don't know if I'll go back there. They are expensive and they made me feel rushed the entire time I was there. The vet was nervous enough about checking my cat's teeth that she jumped when my cat turned her head. My cat has never bitten anyone. Other vets have always been able to look without a problem even though my cat didn't like it. After the basic touch check of my dog (feeling her belly and such), my dog was so nervous that she was shaking. The vet chose to try to give a vaccine in the front leg of my 6lb dog. She even tried a few times with my dog screaming with each attempt. Poor girl had such a sore front leg even though the vaccine was finally injected in the back leg. After the needles I reminded the vet to give cookies and loves so that the puppy was feeling better about the encounter. I saw the Dr who is about to go on mat leave, I was so overwhelmed with feeling rushed that I didn't catch her name. Read Less

We began going to Ottewell initially because of the high ratings, they were always able to fit us in when we called and were super nice, my pup has bad allergies and we struggled for a while taking him in often and spending a ton of money here. I sometimes did not feel like all my questions were answered and that I was very rushed or dismissed.  The last few times we saw a new vet there and she didn't even look at my dog, didn't touch him and the appointment which I paid $120 for lasted about 3 minutes.  She was very disinterested and didn't seem to care at all just wrote a prescription and sent us on our way.  I have decided to look for a new clinic. I have been a client of this clinic for 20 years when Milton Ness was still the principle veterinarian. Since his sudden passing the new owners have taken over and done a great job. The clinic moved and was totally built new. Management is very diligent with follow ups and staff is very sensitive to our needs. We own 5 dogs and multiple cats and all of our furrey family has been in to see the Vets at Ottewell numerous times. Always know what to expect and Doctor Muzyka has always accommodated our needs. We live out of town and she makes a special effort to see out critters first thing in the mornings so we don't have to do as much driving. Nothing but good things to say about Ottwell Animal Clinic. I have been taking my two dogs to Dr. Barb Muzyka at Ottewell Vet for many years now. It is definitely a personal experience each time we go. Dr. Muzyka is very kind and personable to both of my dogs and my family every visit. I never feel like she is rushing us or quick to assess. She takes her time and absolutely understands the value and love I have for my two little guys. The rest of the staff is lovely as well. All so personal! No matter if I have called with a last minute concern or a regular check up needed, they always try their best to get me in right away. I appreciate that so much! I was really pleased with this clinic, at first. The vet seemed very knowledgable and the office was clean. The reception staff were consistently rude, but no big deal... until last night. I booked an appointment a few days before, and when I booked I told that staff I would possibly be a bit late, as I work on the far south side of the city. I knew if the weather was bad at all, I might not make it on time. Turns out, the weather was terrible and the roads were really bad. I left work early so I could try to get to the vet on time. I was 10 minutes late for my appointment and when I got there (around 4:55), covered in cat pee from my yowling cat who hates her carrier, the vet had left for the day. They said they tried to call me (my appointment was at 4:45 and they called me at 4:50) but I don't have handsfree in my car so I couldn't answer the phone. The receptionist was really rude, just telling me how late I was, as if I didn't know and hadn't been apologetic from the second I walked through the door. Then, after I asked a few questions, I found out the vet hadn't even waited 5 minutes for me, even with the road conditions being so bad, but had left right around the same time my appointment was scheduled for. I am still very upset. The vet had left right after they tried to call me, even though they were open for another hour, there was no vet there to see. I don't feel like this is a good vet clinic for anyone who may possibly bit a bit late on days with snowstorms or bad driving conditions, for people who might have to take public transit, people who aren't rich enough to afford bluetooth or handsfree for their car, seniors who might move a bit slower, people who have kids that might cause them to be a bit late. Basically, if you are a bit late then there won't be a vet there to see your pet. My poor cat was so upset and so was I. I really wanted this to be a great vet clinic as it is close to my home and it's very clean, but I think I am going to have to look for another clinic. Read Less

Normally Ottwell Vet would get a high review from me I have been going there for years first with my Mom and our family pets then with my own pets and they have always been very nice and willing to make times for me to come in. However after last night when I called in for an emergency visit with my cat I will not be going back. I was told they didn't have a vet in even though they didn't close for an other 30 mins as well when I stressed I needed to see a vet as it was an emergency they seemed not to care, when I asked about their sister vet clinic Capilano they advised they don't deal with them and don't know their hours. There was no sympathy for my situation and no effort made to get me in contact with a animal hospital or another vet that could help. I ended up going to another vet that had never seen any of my animals and they looked her over and advised I take my cat to the animal hospital as she would need x-rays and blood work done as she was looking or sounding very unwell. Got my dog spayed here and had the WORST experience.  I wish I could put 0 stars.We had previously seen Dr.Muzyka and she seemed quite nice-- although whenever she gave my dog shots she would distract her with a cookie even though we said she's quite car sick and even she advised us that having an empty stomach would be better. The first time she threw up on the way back from the vet's my husband and I were pretty worried, so we called telling them she just got a vaccine and is throwing up more than usual in the car. They said "oh we forgot to tell you it can cause nausea as a side effect. Call us again if she continues throwing up after an hour." THEY FORGOT?!Anyway, about the spay, we were to drop the dog off and come back after a few hours. No over night stay. We get there and we can actually hear her crying... a tech at the front desk assures me that she's been quiet all day except for now. When we finally got her and proceeded to pay - and sign our souls away- the same tech asks "do you want an e-collar?" YOU'RE ASKING ME? YES I WOULD LOVE FOR HER TO JUST RIP OUT HER STITCHES. We got an e-collar that we had to put on ourself, at home, because she "didn't want to upset her more". We were sent home with only 4 syringes that were to be taken once daily. That's all. Basically like 1 puppy Tylenol after having SURGERY. She was in so much pain that evening she couldn't lay down. Her feet would start to splay out and start to slide out from under her because she was so exhausted from standing from the pain. In the morning she tried to lay down but every time she would scream out in pain, not just a whine or yelp. We took her to an emergency animal hospital where they said her suture technique caused a lot of puckering, it was so swollen we couldn't see the stitches and thought it had popped. They gave us anti-inflammatory and extra pain medication and she seemed to be much better with those. Time passed and one stitch just wasn't dissolving? Back to the hospital to get it clipped.NOW her tummy is speckled and there is a nub which is bothering her and a crazy swollen infection  which is causing us to miss work and take her in AGAIN. It's been 1 month and 3 weeks since her operation, she should be peachy dandy by now. My biggest fear is that if they can mess up her stitches so badly and not feel they need to give meds or a collar; what is her inside like? What did they mess up there which is causing so many problems?! Please don't chalk it up to us being negligent puppy parents; we followed every step of advice (and more since we purchased the e-collar). I slept in her kennel area with her the night of her operation. My husband missed multiple days of work in which he gets paid a day rate,  not hourly, so he missed those days and didn't get paid. I am part time (only gone on Wed, Fri, and Sat) and missed extra days as well just to be with her and monitor. I'm absolutely horrified with the Ottwell Animal Clinic and their service. How dare you. I take my reptiles here as they are one of the only reptile vets in edmonton! Amazing caring and friendly service. They had a look at my poor snake osiris the ball python after his heating pad malfunctioned and left him with a nasty burn. She cleaned him up and sent him home with pain medication and cream. When she was done the first visit he already looked a lot better. She was honest that it would be a slow process for healing but with her help, he healed up just fine when I thought he may not make it.  I took him in a few other times just for check ups here and there wile he was heeling because the burn looked so bad, and she only charged me for one appointment! So compassionate. Real animal lovers. They are so comforting, I was extremely upset as I hate to see any animal in pain. Read Less

Absolutely the best!!  Dr Pettifor is our vet and is incredibly well versed in dealing with exotics such as our chinchilla or our ferrets, as well as caring for our dogs.  She is up on the latest research, caring and compassionate and extremely good with the pets and their nervous owners! I honestly can't say enough. Recently we had to euthanize one of our beloved dogs and I had to deal with another veterinarian In the practice. She, along with the awesome staff of techs, was so caring.  It was a difficult time and they handled the whole situation beautifully, including a lovely card from the whole team afterward. Very impressive. We have always been able to get in quickly when we needed to, and dr Pettifor always calls back to follow up. Great Animal Clinic!  Caring, professional, excellent level of knowledge and skill.  After having some bad experiences with other clinics, I was truly thrilled with the level of care, service and skill that was provided at Ottewell Animal Clinic.  When my dog was neutered, and coming out of anesthesia, he was lonely and scared - SO they took him out of the kennel, cuddled him in his baby blanket, and carried him around all afternoon.  They have helped give our dogs and cats exemplary service.  We will never go anywhere else. I'm really happy so far with Ottewell Animal clinic.  Dr. Muzyka is wonderful, she returns calls promptly and is very patient with questions .  The clinic focus seems to be on getting your pet better and if they can avoid bringing in the animal unnecessarily they will.  I spent years at another clinic that gouged me with expensive tests and procedures each and every time my cats had a problem ($1000 for a simple bladder infection, $500 for a misdiagnosed ear infection!) so it really is a relief to have a vet who will look, listen, treat the obvious first then move on to the next step if necessary.   Even though I don't drive and there are clinics closer to home I will continue to use the Ottewell Animal Clinic as I trust Dr. Muzyka has my cats' best interest at heart.
