After 9 plus years of loyalty and love, age and health problems required my son to make the painful decision to euthanize his beautiful bull dog. On Thursday December 3, I travelled from Morinville to be with them for support, The appointment was set for 4:20 PM. Throughout the day we contacted the office with updates and to make sure we could both be there with my son's dog. At 2 PM we administered the sleeping pills as instructed to lessen his dogs stress. At 4:10 we proceeded to the clinic literally in tears for what had to be done. But this was the merciful thing to do because of his illness and suffering.
I am still in total shock and disgust about how the next events occurred. First the room wasn't ready so we had to wait outside for some 10 to 15 minutes, then we were informed that only one of us could go in with his dog. The alternative was to go around the back side of the building as instructed by doctor Mehmi if I have his name correct and have that beautiful dog euthanized in my sons car so we could both be there.
We actually agreed to this and drove around to the back of the building and waited once again. After a lengthy wait the vet came outside to take the dog inside to insert a catheter to administer the injections and to then return with the dog and the medication to complete the procedure in the parking lot. We did not want Ollie being moved back and forth like this as he appeared to be in pain and the sleeping pills were having no effect so I told my son to take him inside and i would wait outside. We were then told the room still wasn't ready and now we had to use the front door. We drove back around to the front of the building and proceeded to wait again,
By now it was after 5 o'clock and Ollie was showing signs of pain and great distress. He vomited and started to choke. My son picked him up in his arms and started kicking the door of the clinic asking for the doctor to help. Finally he came to the door and appeared to be reluctant but eventually allowed my son in with Ollie. The room still wasn't ready and my son and his dog were taken to a waiting room. They were left in that room for at least 10 minutes before Dr.Mehmi returned with the interact machine to be paid for his work first while that poor dog was literally choking in my son's arms. When my son told him that his wallet was in his car and literally started telling him to stop the dogs pain he gave Ollie the injections to end his life.
After some time my son came outside obviously in a lot of grief. I talked with him and tried to comfort and support him for what had happened. The vet was there in less than a minute with the interact machine. He had the nerve to actually ask me if my son was okay. I won't even try to describe how much grief he was in. I paid the bill and we left. The next day after returning home I contacted the Wood Buffalo Small Animal Hospital and asked to speak to the vet. He was busy so I left my name and number and did not hear from him, so I am posting this. My son spent thousands of dollars on his dogs health with these people over the years. A 4;20 pm appointment to end the life of a beloved pet should be better organized than what this was. I would also like to know why it cost $376 to have two injections and cremation when my veterinarian in Morinville performs the same service for $132. I could continue with the smaller complaints but lack of compassion, support and understanding by this clinic is enough for any loving pet owner to look for another clinic. People ask your vets the question, what should you expect when you decide to help your beloved pet through this event. I lived in Fort McMurray for 42 years and never witnessed anything as horrible as this. I wouldn't let that doctor shingle the roof on my dog's house let alone look after him. Tony C. Read Less
