We have been coming to this animal hospital for years and they are truly wonderful. The vets, the technicians and the staff are all very caring and helpful. One of our doggies recently has been having seizures, and he was seen by a few vets at the clinic. Dr Gravelings, Dr Armstrong and Dr Kates. They are all outstanding and caring. Especially Dr Kates, she shows a true passion in caring for animals and she was extremely patience and careful when she was examining my dog. She is very knowledgeable, understanding, and informative. She took the time to answer any of the concerns we had. And the way she communicates is non-judgemental and unbiased. We really feel that she has the heart for the animals and she really wants them to do well. We feel blessed to have found such a wonderful vet! And their vet technicians are also amazing. The one we encountered the most is Jennifer. She is very caring and gentle with our doggies. She is very helpful, and when we told her we were not comfortable bringing our doggie to Canada west for the neurology consultation because of the poor comments we saw online, she right away said she can help us forward the referral letter to a hospital of our choice. And the many small things that they have done, it really shows they care. I have seen some have mentioned here about their prices. All I can say is we have been to the metrotown animal hospital and some other animals clinics, and the South Burnaby vet is where we want my doggies to be. They treat everyone and animals with respect and care. Read Less

While the staff is very friendly, service is good, and the doctors qualified, I can't help but feel overcharged every. single. time. I go here. They give me zero information about whether the prescriptions are absolutely necessary, or just a recommendation. Last time I went, they charged me $85 for a medication that my dog didn't even need, and when I called to complain they then refused to offer a refund or even a future credit against a consultation. Their consultation fees are absolutely ridiculous, and I'm disappointed to read other reviews with similar experiences. This is the one to avoid when you are faced with an emergency decision for your pet.Consultation fee for five minute visit $80.00. Quote for services was four times as much as other vets. Yes, 4 times! This is not justifiable. It is taking advantage of people. I see other reviews that mention "transparent in pricing" and yet my daughter called about bringing her cat in and was told nothing about the consultation fee. She waited forty minutes in the waiting room and had a five minute consult that resulted in an $80 bill. I get that they aren't doing this for free but how do you justify $80 for five minutes. My in-laws were watching our guinea pigs while we were away on a trip when they noticed that one wasn't eating, so they brought him into this vet. The vet was unable to diagnose the issue. They tried to get a scope or something into the guinea pig's mouth, but in that process he bit them twice. Guinea pigs do not bite unless they are extremely stressed or in a lot of pain, and we have never been bitten before. They sent my in-laws home with some critical care and unnecessary medicines. Three days later when we got home he was still extremely listless, unable to eat on his own, and barely eating with syringe feeding. We also found what we later learned was a cyst on his side. I called South Burnaby Vet hospital to get a quote for how much it would be to put him under and find out what was going on. They said they would call me back in the afternoon with an update and to provide a quote. Quite helpfully, she said that since their small animals specialist wasn't going to be in for a few days, that they would also discuss referrals with us. I'm so glad we didn't wait for that phone call. We brought him into the Capitol Hill vet that same day and they were able to take his temperature and look in his mouth with no issue. She also found a cancerous mass that the South Burnaby vet hadn't noticed and sadly we had to put our poor guinea pig down. If the vet at South Burnaby had noticed this when he was first brought in, he would have been spared days of pain and suffering. Then to add insult to injury, they never called us back that day with the update or the quote they had promised. Instead, South Burnaby called the next day to ask if we were going to bring the guinea pig in the next day even though I had told them that our guinea pig was really sick and we couldn't wait for their vet to come back. Miss Mocha is always friendly EXCEPT at the vets... We have had her since she was 6 months old and has always received nothing but professional and friendly care from ALL the staff at South Burnaby! They always politely call to remind me when she is due for her shots and ask how she is doing. In 2012 when mocha was attacked by a pit bull in our neighbour hood at the time, it completely shook me up. The hospital was just closing for the night but luckily someone picked up the phone and spoke with me when they heard my desperate plea on the voicemail. They directed me to the ER in Vancouver for the night and promptly booked me an appointment the NEXT morning with Dr. Graveling (mochas favourite vet). After a long night with no sleep and worry we made our way to South Burnaby. The front desk woman noticed me having trouble getting mocha out of the car and popped out of the building to help me carry her in (I had a knee injury at the time and could barely walk myself). She helped me place her on one of the couches and proceeded to get me a cold glass of water (middle of summer time). She immediately tended to mocha and was keeping her calm while also taking a sneaky set of vitals, Dr. Graveling also came out and helped me take mocha into the exam room. They are so incredibly gentle and kind at this veterinary hospital! Recently mocha had a serious eye issue and Burnaby was closed at the time I noticed mochas problem eye. I again and to go to the ER they endorse, 3 days later I came in to see Dr. Graveling again. She gave a very thorough exam and actually figured out mocha had a bad anal gland as well, mocha looked so much more relaxed after the appointment (of course she was ready to get out of there though). Not to mention the other place put mocha on medicine that (as i said to the ER vet) has not worked for mocha recently, Dr. Graveling immediately put her on new medicine. She makes you feel understood, she also has a great was of explaining everything to you! If you want the best care for your fur babies please please please bring them to South Burnaby! It is a bit more pricey but not by much when you factor in the amount of passion, quality of care and professionalism these people have for your animal! They also sell treats, edible birthday cards for your pet, and vet approved wellness kibble and food. Call them today and book your consultation if you haven't already! Your fur baby will thank you! I had previously been taking my 3 month kitten to a vet down the street who I wasn't too thrilled about. I always drive by a South Burnaby vets and had heard great things from friends who are clients of theirs. Just a couple days ago I took my kitten in for his second round of shots and was so impressed with the care and service I received. The front desk staff were all friendly and welcoming and Sherrilynn (sorry if misspelled) took us in to the exam room and played with our kitten and took all his information down before Dr Buxton came in. She was extremely friendly and very professional. After about 10-15 minutes, Dr Buxton came in and examined out kitten and guided us through every second of it. She is a very sweet and caring person who clearly loves what she does!We had arrived 20 min late for our appointment but they took us in with no problems and even stayed late to finish up with us. Another nice lady whose name I don't know (short hair) kindly led us to the door afterwards while giving us many useful pointers on our young kitten. I brought my pet because she got a swollen, teary eye. After inspecting her, the vet was vague of what was wrong with her. I tried my best to understand what he was saying with his heavy Middle-East accent (no offence), but I couldn't get any of it. Even when he wrote down the list of shots that "may" help reduce the swelling, I asked him if they were necessary, but he was also vague about it. I asked him to slowly clarify it. I've been taking my dog to the vet here for about a year now. I think they provide great service and they're so good with my dog, who isn't the easiest beast to handle, but they're so expensive. Last year, treating a couple of minor ailments cost nearly $600 in diagnosis and tests and drugs. It might have been more, but I pleaded poverty when they suggested some tests, and they agreed that some tests might not be necessary. They do however, have a very new and clean facility, and they do have some off-street parking at the clinic. But still, I'm doing my best to keep my dog healthy to avoid those big vet bills... and doing my research before going to the vet.Sigh. I may need to look into a different vet hospital because I cannot sustain these unbelievable and unnecessary charges. Read Less

(He's a very friendly but over-excitable dog that we're working on) and let me know when a room was available to bring him inside to be alone. They were very conscientious about how much everything would cost for diagnosis and lab work, it was explained clearly and I was given options on which procedures were more urgent than others. Overall my first impression of South Burnaby was greater than I ever imagined and I can definitely see many years to come with them! Read Less

But all I got was the same unclear answer. Overall, I was really disappointed after visiting for the first time. The reviews didn't help at all. Indeed, I won't go there again. Read Less

Maybe it's just best to try and keep a straight face when the clerk names a figure, and remember that this is just one of those pet-owning things... Read Less
