Cheam View Veterinary Hospital

Chilliwack, British Columbia
General Info
Cheam View Veterinary Hospital was founded in 1961 by Drs. Morley Rendall and Hugh Philip when they became partners and moved a building to our current address of 8337 Young Road. Drs. Brian Upper and Ralph Estensen joined the practice in 1967. These four doctors built our existing hospital in 1975. Through the years a number of veterinarians have come and gone and the hospital facility has been updated and renovated accordingly. Cheam View Veterinary Hospital treated both companion animals and farm animals until 1998 when Dr. Smith purchased the companion animal portion of the practice and Dr. Upper retained the farm animal portion of the practice.

Do not bring your pet here. To say Cheam Vet as well as everyone at the front desk was the most unprofessional veterinarian clinic I have ever dealt with is an aggressive understatement. I first brought my cat in 2.5 weeks ago for an emergency. It was 6am and I had no other option as they were the only open options and I thought she was choking. She was kept in for the day and it was ruled that he had no idea what was wrong ($1000 later) sent home with pills for her stomach and pain. A couple of days ago I noticed she was acting funny and I suspected her vision was lost. I brought her in to Cheam again as they had just done fresh blood work and x-rays so it made sense to do so. She was sent home not long after and I was told that yes her vision was gone and that they had no idea why. Was given some drops for her eyes and told to check in again. I then brought her for a second opinion the next day at her normal vet. I was told many things that were wrong with her and that Cheam should have told me to begin with. But to top it all off her blood pressure was immensely high and that that is one of the main reasons for sudden vision loss. Cheam did not do a blood pressure test and that should have been one of the first things they did. My normal vet told me that I should get them to transfer papers over to them immediately. Including doctors notes and that it is my right to have all of them. They warned me that they have had difficulty with getting paper transfers from Cheam in the past. So I immediately phoned them and asked them for them. They sent over the blood work. I then called back immediately while still at my normal vets; asking for the X-rays and doctors notes. They said they would send them by the end of the day. Nothing. So I gave them until the next morning. Still nothing. So I drove in myself and asked the woman at the front counter. She eventually sent the X-rays after a couple of hours but excluded the doctors notes. My vet told me he needed those notes as they are vital. So on day two of attempting to get the notes my regular vet reception tells me they will try. They were hung up on. So I call. They take my number and tell me they will send them ASAP. It’s now day three, my cat is still blind and I need doctors notes. So I call at 9am. The woman who answered was very nice and told me that she had just come on shift and this was the first she had heard of it. But that I may need to call back a few times if I’m wanting to get the notes as they are sometimes like that. So I wait two hours and call again. A different woman answers listens to who I’am and hangs up. I call again. No answer. I call three times with no answer. Then on the fourth time they pretend they can’t hear anything on the phone. They do that three times. So I have someone else call from their phone to see if they answer. They do. They tell them that the doctor is on vacation and took off on vacation directly after treating my cat. That they legally have 5 days to give doctors notes. My friend asks why it’s so Difficult to email over important notes. They then tell her that “sometimes we don’t take notes.” To which she responds that that is their job and they should always be taking notes. They give her attitude and hang up. So I give it a half hour and call back. They answer. I’m mad at this point, very mad. The conversation lasted about 10 minutes. In that time they told me “you were told he’s sick.” I said “ I thought you said vacation, get your story straight.” She then tells me “I think this is less about your cat and more about your ego.” I tell her I just want the notes for my vet. She says “if your vet is so great he wouldn’t need some other doctors notes.” At this point im losing my mind and screaming at this woman. I told her I planned on going to the news with this. Her response was “go to the news they’re just going to laugh at you.” Many other things were said and I had some choice words that I would never usually say to any sort of reception or customer service. In the end she hung up on me. Two hours later I got an email with the doctors notes to send over to my regular vet. Not only did I have to literally scream at these people to get what I’m legally entitled too but they did not do their job in detecting what they should have immediately. Her blood pressure. I’m sickened, saddened and disgusted. And trust me, I will be going to the news with this. And we can see who is laughing then. Read Less

I would not recommend visiting this place unless you want to be spoken to in a condescending fashion while the staff guilts you in to unnecessairily spending. Heres what my experience entailed. I brought in a 2 year old DSH feline to be seen for dental issues. I brought this cat from Ontario where I was a volunteer and foster care provider at a rescue, so ive delt with many clinics, both honest and dishonest. I was told that i booked him to get checked out and that i sasaid he has FiV. This is a bold faced lie, he never has tested positive and i brough vet records record, since his birth, to show proof. They still went ahead and did blood work and tests for FiV and charged me $318 for a vet visit that should have consisted of a visit ($20) and 2 scripts ($45) before booking him for a cleaning next week but now ill be going to cottonwood with its 137 great reviews. I refuse to use a service that is emotionally abusive towards its clients with full intentions of inflating costs. Read Less

As our dog was potentially nearing her last days, we were originally going to another clinic in Sardis. We were so disgusted with the "care" we received there that we came to Cheam clinic for a second opinion. Here we were treated kindly and professionally by Dr. Chahal and ALL the wonderful staff here. I was very impressed with how Dr. Chahal listened to us and tried to do his best to help our dog without suggesting ridiculously expensive and unnecessary treatments since our dog always had a strong heart murmur from birth. We did have to put our beloved pet down, we were treated with the utmost respect and understanding through the whole process. I will definitely bring my next dog here. Read Less

This is the most amazing vet in have ever visited. I have gone to many vets, have had many pets but this was heaven sent. I live in Vancouver (where a friend made the recommendation) but make the commute out to chilliwack just to see Dr. Chahal. He is an animal lover at heart and it shows with how he handles my dog. I feel completely comfortable leaving my baby in his care. A few months ago, my dog had dislocated her rear left leg. I immediately took her to a vet near my house in Vancouver, and he said I needed emergency surgery and it will cost $1600. I went to another vet, he also said surgery. Then the next morning I drove to see dr Chahal and he examined her and said surgery is the last resort and only considered after all other methods are exhausted. He put her on a treatment where she gets shots every 4 weeks and changed her food to help with her joints. This cost me less than $100 and she is back to running up and down the stairs. There is not enough praise I can give this place. I hope he never retires. When he does, I will stop having pets. Read Less

My family is currently having a negative experience with the vet who saw our German Shepherd at Cheam View Hospital. One of the family dogs was brought in for an examination recently. The vet initially asked for the dog to be sedated for the x-ray.  However, we refused as it would be an extra $200 dollar cost along with a kennel fee $20 to house the dog.  I speculate that extra measures were recommended for the purposes of cashing in on more money as the vet had gone on and on like a salesperson of why we should do it.After the vet confirmed the diagnosis of cancer in the dog, the vet  discussed options with us including amputation or putting the dog down.  The cancer had not metastasized so we decided to take the dog home.  We understood that the dog had cancer and that we needed to put her down at some point.  However, we did not choose to do it immediately as we needed some time to digest the situation. The day after we went to this vet, we received a call from the SPCA.  The vet had reported us to the SPCA for animal cruelty.  We phoned the SPCA back as they had left a message but there was no one to answer the phone at the SPCA.The family has raised this dog for 9 years and has loved her as part of the family.  It is unimaginable to be charged with animal cruelty at this point.  Obviously, we could not have been that cruel as we had taken the dog to the vet to have her examined!I am angry with the vet.  She did not mention about charging us with animal cruelty and the SPCA.  Why did she not mention it?  Be honest with the pet owners and talk to them.  Don't resort to extreme measures.  Her actions were back-handed.  Where is the compassion?I am confident that the vet's rebuttal would be to say that her actions were in the best interest of the animal.  However, her actions were extreme.  I have lost confidence in the relationship between the vet and the pet owners.  I also feel that vets nowadays are pushing for extra services like pet insurance in order to earn more money. We will be putting the dog down but not at Cheam View Hospital even though we are paying for another vet visit.I am wary of going to see the vet as it seems that if you do not give them more money they will find ways to get it from you!  For example, call the SPCA, have the dog go back to the vet = $$$$ for vet.In response to Tamara M's review from 3/7/2013, my review is indeed intended for Cheam View Veterinary Hospital.  My family resides in Chilliwack and went to this veterinary hospital.  The vet was indeed a female at that time. Read Less

First time at this clinic and I am so impressed with Dr. Chahal. He is knowledgeable & direct and delivered his diagnosis compassionately! But what really touched my heart was when he wept along with us as we said our final goodbyes to our beloved kitty. That speaks volumes to your character, Dr. Chahal. You are EXACTLY the kind of vet this world needs more of! Thank you for not diminishing the pain of our loss! You have clients for life in us! Read Less

This is the ONLY vet I will go to now. The doctor and all the staff there are amazing and very accommodating. Unlike other Veterinary Hospitals (I won't say who), they actually care about the well being of the animals who come to them. The first place I went to only cared about money when I brought my dog in after he was attacked by a bear. Whereas, this vet hospital saved my dogs life and I am very grateful for that. So thank you! I can't say enough good things about this veterinary hospital!Read Less

Read Less

I had my first experience with this clinic two days ago and it was excellent. All of my questions were answered in detail. The Dr. is completely up to date on the procedures and testing I require, and the staff is friendly and efficient. I found the cost for testing and procedures to be more than fair. As a pet owner/show breeder, I'm thrilled to have found a clinic I can trust and rely on. Thank you, Dr.KC!
