This morning I brought my son’s dwarf hamster in for an appointment because he had mites… the hamster was less than a year old, super healthy, and was well handled. What was supposed to be a routine appointment in which he simply get treatment for mites, instead ended with him being dead, and my son being heartbroken. While the doctor was holding him, he let out a squeak as if he’d been squeezed too hard, then he stopped moving, in which the doctor said “he needs oxygen” and took him out of the room. A minute later the assistant came in saying “he’s crashing”, then 2 minutes later they both came in, the doctor holding him, saying “he’s unfortunately died”…. In less than 5 minutes he went from being alive & healthy, to being dead. While it’s just a hamster, my son was deeply attached and loved his pet. He is already dealing with my younger brothers tragic death Feb 11th, and my cousins death from November. He also was with my dad when my dad died in 2017, and he lost his father a year before that. My son has suffered immense loss in his 16 years, and the very last thing he deserved was to send his beloved pet to a simple vet appointment only for it to die….
