In 28 years of living with animals, I have never experienced worse care at a vet.
I’ll preface this by saying that my dog is city-shy. She has never been problematic with any adult, child, dog, or cat.
Today my dog reacted to Dr. Hart’s rushed and frankly unobservant advances and nipped the air next to her hand as a signal that she did not like what the Dr. was doing. I agree that this behaviour is unacceptable, but this occurred after my dog was showing many textbook signs of stress response (tail between the legs, whale eyes, cowering, flight attempts, ears back, trembling) while Dr. Hart continued to pet and hold her in areas she was clearly not comfortable with. I was truly appalled that the vet didn’t (or maybe just outright couldn’t) read my dogs body language and act accordingly.
After disciplining my dog, muzzling her and apologizing for her attempted nip, the Dr. continued on a long rant about how she is “a very bad and dangerous dog”. I listened and agreed with certain suggestions she made, but at a certain point felt the dialogue was long-winded, patronizing, and frankly, void of any mutual accountability for her role in my dogs discomfort. After explaining that my dog does not like to be touched on her behind, and that she had been signalling this clearly before she attempted to nip and create a boundary, Dr. Hart lost her composure.
Any attempts I made to engage in a constructive process, like explaining that she doesn’t like to be touched in certain areas and needed some time to adjust to a stranger handling her so rushedly, or outlining that she is very city and vet-shy and needed gentle and calm engagement (something I explained when the Dr. walked in), were rebuffed as “excuses”, saying that “SHE is not the type to get bitten” and literally yelling that she has “been a vet for 32 years and do(es) not need my constructive feedback.”
This part was even more appalling, because I agree that people can be very knowledgable and well-practiced, but I truly believe there is always room to learn and grow.
This experience was particularly disappointing, because this was my second and last attempt at having a good experience at this clinic. About 1 year ago when my dog was a puppy, she ate a poisonous plant. I called Cottonwood after-hours and requested emergency care. I was told I’d receive a call back promptly. After waiting 30 mins I called again, and was told that I’d be called right away. Over 2 hours later I received a call telling me that it was too late to induce vomiting and that i needed to get her to a vet ASAP.
At this point I rushed her to the Animal Hospital and was greeted with exceptional care. They were very confused why this potentially fatal situation was put on the back-burner, and we were all glad when my dog made a full recovery.
I returned to Cottonwood and Dr. Hart because I believe that everyone makes mistakes and we shouldn’t hold people to their worst moments. Sadly, it's now clear that Dr. Hart’s clinics previous “worse moment” was in reality a truthful reflection of their capabilities to provide adequate care.
The cherry on top of this last visit was when the time came to pay, I was charged $152 for a physical exam that my dog never received. I was in the room the entire time and there was not anything done apart from listening to her heartbeat for about 5 seconds. Absolutely criminal to charge so much for a service not even performed in full.
The overall vibe of this clinic, is stressful, rushed and void of any compassion for animal or owner alike. They have repeatedly shown me that they will do the bare minimum, while charging the highest price for services they may not have even provided.
I encourage anyone reading reviews to also read the other low ratings here. There are similar tales that show this was not a one-off scenario.
I truly believe that (and have witnessed) Selkirk Vet and the Nelson Animal Hospital do a far superior job. Do yourself a favour and take your pets there instead. Read Less
