I have been taking my puppy here for the past 5 months. The Vets at VCA are wonderful and caring. However the other staff members are the problem. (Except Carla at the Front Desk she is great!).
The other staff members don't seem to care about your animals, My puppy has been sick on numerous occasions recently, The vets have been great following up with phone calls and asking us to come back in.
I made a time with the vet to come in after work to meet with the vet so he could weigh and see my puppy again, But when we got there we were basically turned away by the staff saying they were full.
I tried explaining to him that the vet asked us to specifically come in after work and that he should speak to him.. Which he did not do.
We waited outside for a while, I could see that the vet had other patients (Which is fine, but the other staff member didn't even tell him we were there waiting to see him) after about a half hour of waiting we left and later got a call from the vet apologizing.
I thought ok Its a busy day it happens, But then called to make an emergency appt with the vet as my puppy became very ill again over the weekend. I called the vet as soon as they opened the lady at the front told me they were full and couldn't do anything, I asked if she could speak to the vet and see if there was anyway they could sneak us in. (Which I'm sure she did not do).
because I never received a call back and we had to book in to see someone at another clinic.
I'm happy I did because he is now back on Antibiotics!.
The poor staff is why I will be starting to look for a new clinic, Which is really unfortunate because my pup loves the vets and I think they are wonderful.
But why have a vet when they are not willing to even try and accommodate when your animal is extremely ill. Read Less

I read the negative reviews and all I can see is people that have no knowledge and don't really care about their animals, but do care about money.Vets ARE expensive in Canada. Get over it. If you can't afford the medical care - don't get an animal. You can't really claim the doctors aren't knowledgeable, unless you possess a degree in veterinary medicine (which I do, in fact).I was extremely reluctant to trust anyone with the care of my dog, but I had no choice. Though I have knowledge, I don't have equipment, nor do I carry Canadian license. However, Dr. Hakobyan at Highlands Animal Hospital won my trust from a very first visit. He saved my dog, which I would have to put down if his limb was amputated. He only ended up losing a toe.The care I've received at the hospital, personal follow ups - I'm beyond impressed.Yes, it wasn't cheap. Yes, surgery costs money. Yes, medications are expensive. That's one of the sides of owning a an animal. As a result of their competence I now have a 9 year old Rottweiler that completely bounced back and still behaves like a puppy.Healthy and happy. Do not take your pets here for surgery. Don’t bring your guinea pigs here especially.
I’m confident my pet would still be alive had I gone somewhere else or if they had the professional decency to refer me to a vet that could help me. I used to recommend this place, Not anymore.
I thought I was paying for quality care for my pets because of their pricing but it has become clear that is not the case.
I had a surgery done here for one of my guinea pigs. She had an abscess removed from her face. Half of the abscess was left inside her cheek. I was told it could not be removed completely so the wound was left open for the second half of the abscess to drain. (Ridiculous..)
I voiced my concerns over an infection forming in the massive unclosed wound but was brushed off. I had to rush her to an emergency clinic because of how fast the infection had spread. The emergency vet was able to get the entire abscess out and stitch her up without a problem.
so why was it not done at Highlands?
Her little body could not handle two surgeries a few days apart and she died. She died because of an infection due to the terrible first surgery.
Horrible, horrible experience.

I have never actually seen a vet here but have tried to order dog kibble from them on a few occasions and have always had a terrible experience.
On one occasion it took the staff 3 tries to order the right kibble. It didn't appear to be a problem with the supplier but rather the staff just weren't able to correctly note the required kibble. I found the front desk staff cold, rude and unaccommodating. My dog has severe food allergies and has to eat a special diet. I placed my order with the staff 2 weeks before I was due to run out of kibble but that apparently wasn't enough time. The receptionist did not apologize and did not seem concerned about my dog's wellbeing and his allergies.
I'm not sure how they keep getting voted best on the north shore. I imagine it's due to a lack of options. Read Less

Absolutely the best vet I have ever been to. Dr Hayk had a wonderful candor with my cat, very warm and even gave her a nickname. He spent a good amount of time with us and I never felt rushed at any point. He also gave me a lot of information without judgement and without pushing certain products or extra tests. Their exam is double the price of other places on the north shore ($70) and even though I am lower income I definitely thought it was well worth it. The other staff were very warm and friendly and gave extra free samples when a product I wanted to buy was out of stock. All in all it was wonderful visit and their standard of care is very high. I will definitely recommend Highlands Animal Hospital to anyone needing vet services. Read Less
