We took our Beagle Lucy here for an infection and we’re incredibly grateful for the care she received. The front desk people were kind and empathetic as was the triage tech. We came on a Friday night but only waited about 5 minutes for triage then roughly another 20 for the first vet exam. The staff was absolutely fantastic! You can tell they really loves dogs. They was also very transparent about the costs for the tests/procedures which we appreciated. They also was very thorough explaining the course of treatment and her care at home. Ozzie, our dachshund was sick for over 24 hours unable to keep solids of even water down. We were very grateful for the thoroughness of staff. X-rays taken showed no blockage which was reassuring. The animal hospitals were very busy, the hospital was able to prioritise the severity of each patient. We took our puppy to Alta Vista on an emergency basis. He was is a bad way....the girl we spoke with on the phone was courteous, kind and caring. The Tech who came out to get our puppy was equally courteous, and kind and was really caring...and the vet who took care of him - again - amazing! We had a really good experience, even though we were stressed and worried. They did a fantastic job taking care of our Bear and then after the over night visit they send us home with his meds, and very comprehensive and easy to understand instruction list AND they followed up with us a few days later and a week later....I am hoping to never have to use the emergency service again, BUT they will be the first place we go if we ever do need it again - thanks for taking care of our puppy, and us! I Like this clinic. From the receptionist, the vet assistant, and the veterinarian, were very nice and helpful both to me and my dog. They worked with me to make it affordable. Eyes infected, upper respiratory infection, diarrhea, neglected, under weight, and intestinal infestation. We didn't know if he was going to live. HE KILLED A DOG with NO REMORSE or APOLOGIES!!!  DO NOT TAKE YOUR precious furry family members to this monster!!!  Dr Munjal used to be my dog's vet, but I found out today that he treated family member's dog for a routine procedure and the dog died.  Dr Munjal knew there was a complication, but let the owner take the dog home where she passed away within hours.  To add insult to injury, when presented with an opportunity to issue a refund for the procedure that killed the dog, he turned his back unapologetically.  I will no longer take my dog here and I hope this serves as a warning to anyone who might be considering him as a vet.  This would be a zero star rating if that was an option. My dog was spayed this passed week all was well until I went in today ( I am partially deaf so I don't hear clearly,) one of the girls that work there was what I call rather rude to me and chided me for removing our dog protective cone, which we do when we take her into the car as it's easier for her and us. She went on to state that the dog might get an infection if the dog licks the wound ( she was maybe correct) but when we remove the collar for a car ride, my wife sits with the dog and wouldn't allow that to happen. However, I think the girl in the clinic needs to learn how to interact with people politely and not be so rude. The ideal way to lose customers. Read Less

They quoted me 1 price for a cut for my cat then when I went it the charge was 75$ more then they told me. After I double check with them how much it cost and what it included. Dr. Munjal and the team are exceptionally competent, compassionate and accommodating. Over the years they have cared for 3 of our cats and our dog. They were able to take on complex issues, the animals loved them (only pets I've had that loved going to the vet) and they gave valuable advice on our options. I also appreciated that they are very open; when our dog was sick and had to be brought in for rehydration each day they had no problem with me going to the back to fetch her, nothing to hide. The staff is warm, the doctors also met us after hours in exceptional cases. Highly recommend this vet to anyone with any animal. So glad they are in the Dunbar area to serve the pets around here. My cat Ruca came down with a mysterious illness a few months ago, so I've been spending a lot of time at Alta Vista Animal Hospital. The staff here is wonderful, they are always welcoming and friendly and seem genuinely interested in how Ruca is feeling. Dr. Munjal has been great at explaining all our options with each visit and actually tries to keep the costs down for us instead of pushing for expensive tests or treatments. I looked into the prices at other vets for the same treatments we have done and Alta Vista has very reasonable prices, while still offering knowledgeable and friendly service. We got our rescue cat from here and had her come back for her routine visits for 7 years - she is not an easy cat, but the assistants and Dr.Munjal were great with her. Dr.Munjal is wonderful - kind, caring, calm and knowledgeable. Very reasonable rates, and never charged for unnecessary treatments. Booking an appointment was always easy and we could get in without any trouble. Staff that work there are friendly and helpful. When our cat was young, shortly after we picked her up from here, she was having some digestive issues and Dr.Munjal gave us medication and some food to help ease her tummy without any charge. He even gave us advice over the phone and over email many times. We are sad to leave, but have moved to east Van and the drive is just too far for our cat and our young kids. The only issue we ever had here was when Dr. Munjal was off and he had someone filling in - that vet was not particularly helpful, so make sure when you book an appointment that you are getting Dr. Munjal.Hoping to find another vet just as good. Although this happened a couple of years ago, and we tried to let what happened go, but this just doesn't sit with us. We think that the public should know how dishonest Alta Vista Animal Hospital is. We are utterly disappointed with the owner / veterinarian's dishonesty and incompetence. He failed to disinfect his clinic properly, after he had treated several kittens that had parvo, a highly contagious disease could cause very quick death if not treated urgently. This is a disease that is not common in Canada, it is almost as rare as seeing a rabies case in dogs. He should have known that Parvo virus can stay in the room for up to four years or even longer if the entire area / clinic is not disinfected properly. He took our kitten to the same area in the back where the other kittens died from parvo for doing some tests. After that procedure, my kitten caught parvo at Alta Vista Animal Hospital.  Our kitten got really sick with a new set of symptoms after visited his clinic, so we brought our kitten back. He charged us $700 dollars and told us that our kitten had parvo, so I wanted to bring our kitten to the animal emergency hospital for treatment, but he advised us not to bringing our kitten to the emergency. He insisted it would be unnecessarily to bring the kitten to the emergency, and told me firmly that our kitten could fight parvo on her own. Sadly our kitten died on the same day. Kittens couldn't fight parvo on their own, because they can only receive the full strength of shots for parvo in two, so during the waiting period before the receiving the boost shot, they kittens are not immune to Parvo. Instead of giving us the correct advice for saving our kitten's life after our kitten caught parvo at his clinic, he insisted complete incompetent veterinarian advice and caused our kitten to die. Underneath of this man's friendly facade, he is a dishonest and  incompetent vet. The owner of Alta Vista Animal Hospital showed us he is a human with despicable character. Read Less

I am quite surprised by the reviews of this place. My experiences have been very positive. I have taken a few different pets here over the years. Most recently I took my kitten in for her initial shots and exam. She had a difficult time in the exam room and was quite scared but the vet treated her very calmly and gently even though he had to wear the sleeve length rubber gloves to handle her. The veterinary assistants I have dealt with were all very friendly and helpful. Despite being located on Dunbar the prices are competitive. I would recommend Alta Vista. The front staff and vet assistants are very knowledgeable and professional and Dr. Munjal explains the medical issue without drama but with compassion. Our latest disaster - our 4 year old dog suddenly couldn't bear weight on her hind leg. Long story - she needs surgery. A specialist surgeon Dr. Kahlon will come to do the operation in-house. UPDATE everything went well and she is walking fine now.Dr. Mujal also came to the house Christmas Eve at 3 pm when our very old dog suddenly, couldn't move from her bed and needed to be put to sleep. He was compassionate and very caring. We don't know what we would have done so late on CHRISTMAS EVE without his home visit as she couldn't make it even a few more hours. NOTE: I would not board my pet at any vets office. Too much noise and stressed out patient pets to make for a good experience. A cat owner of 25 years, I brought in new kitten for exam and round of shots. The doc seemed surprised by the kitty being unhappy while being handled on the table, he kept commenting and muttering under his breath about how unusal the kitten's reaction was. Then to make things more awkward, the kitten was able to shake the syringe out after it was inserted & before the doc gave the shot -- TWICE. I have never seen that level of ineptitude before. At best the doc was out of his element in dealing with cats, and at worst he was afraid of some hissing and growling -- wtf?!DON'T RECOMMEND!! Read Less

This is a local vet for our new puppy. First visit today and despite the cats - 2 resident in the waiting room, all went well. Diagnosed an ear infection we didn't know he had, did the check up and gave him the shots - in and out in 45 minutes. The rates seemed reasonable for services. A disappointing experience.  Lots of errors abound, from mischeduling our Saturday spay/neuter appointment to Friday, to needing then not using shot records and almost getting the wrong shots, to the visible tattooing of the cats ears when we asked to make sure they would be too low to see. Great they work closely with Vokra, but not only were we made to feel odd (and a bit chastised) about not getting our  kittens there, they did not seem to even know how to  deal with kittens not adopted from vokra.They apologized about the tattooing ( no offer for refund or other solution) only after explaining it was our expectations that were in error instead of information we were given to the contrary. We gave lots of chances to redeem (everyone has an off day, right?) but left each time frustrated.  The last time we left was after a close call with almost being double vaccinated for rabies. We saw two different vets from the practice. Nice enough, but a respectful 'kennel-side' manner was not the priority. Certainly not the kind of vets who offered proactive care. Read Less

Our neighbours' recommended Alta Vista and we have been very happy bringing our puggle there. The vet explained what vaccinations he thought were worthwhile and which ones we would not need based on where we were traveling and doing with our dog. They do routine things like nail clipping (which with our dog is not routine) and everything else. They really care about animals and are willing to spend a lot of time without charging as much as I expected. We enjoy seeing the kittens and cats they have for adoption as well. Read Less

We went to Alta Vista based on our neighbours' recommendations.  The vet  and his assistants are very good with our dog, and spend a lot of time with her.  He charges less than I expected and does not try to charge for things that are not necessary.   Our dog is afraid of having her nails trimmed (probably because I cut them using instructions I found on the internet) and I wish I had brought her to Alta Vista first.We are lucky to have a really good, caring veterinary practice in Dunbar.  (Y.Z. must have had a misunderstanding- anyone visiting Alta Vista will see that (edit- I learned that Y.Z.'s pet was a guinea pig, so yes it is normal to change the bedding in a guinea pig's cage less often than a dog or cat). It is quite possible the veterinian is knowledgeable and effective.However:  the impression the vet. assistance staff gave on the phone was horrific.  I would NOT EVER recommend, for any reason, bringing a pet there, and certainly not board a pet there!  I was told my standards could not be met so they would not be able to board my pet there.  The reason?  They only clean pet cages every 2 to 3 days!  Can you imagine the unsanitary conditions and discomfort to the poor animal?  My standards are NORMAL not "too high".  They presented as not too bright, very judgemental, and as having poor comprehension skills.  Frankly, by the end of the first conversation, I had decided I would not leave my pet there even if it were free.  I tried a second person and that was even worse - so how can you expect any better from anyone else there?  Like minds tend to group together.  The rudeness, ignorance,  lower than low standards with which they maintain the boarding pets, and just plain stupidity left me alarmed, shocked,  disgusted, angry and so apalled, I have come to the conclusion it's not worth the distress of finding help for a pet and having to deal with creatures such as these, and therefore, I would never again take another pet to care for, as much as I love animals.  Advice to the wise:  stay as far away from this hell place as you can. awesome service and forever grateful for saving the life of our mini american eskie!  Dr. Munjal and his team of vet assistants saved our dog's life from pyometra,high fever and sepsis!!  he performed emergency surgery on short notice and was highly involved in her healing process even though she had a slim chance of survival. through the hands of Alta Vista's dedicated team of animal lovers, they helped save the life of a family member by working long hours and ensuring our dog was well taken care of (even if it involved force feeding).  He is very knowledgable and patient,  and made sure that no unnecessary tests were done to drive up the bill and does everything to make sure your pet is cured and comfortable. Dr. Munjal and his team go far and beyond as pet life savers and i highly recommend them! He also does great dental work as my dogs have seen him prior to the latest incident. Read Less

Small, but good vet. I don't think they have a lot of exposure, but they are definitely better than most of the vets in Vancouver and trust me with trid a lot of them! It's a great option if you need flexible scheduling for your appointments. They also do after hours in special cases. The vet tech here is great. The vet here provides honest advice, but as with most vets you have to consider what is really necessary treatment wise and what you can afford. He sometimes seems to push the x-rays which are costly. That being said, I think the prices are fair and he is knowledgeable. They are considerate and accommodating. I think because it is a small practice they are able to do so. The only thing is I believe in holistic medicine in addition to conventional so we only come here for basic treatments. Read Less

Great Vet! And really great Vet assistants. We have a British Bulldog (obviously we've run into some health problems) and Alta Vista has been an absolute delight to deal with. They are decently priced and very knowledgeable. Plus it's always a joy to go and see the Kittens they adopt out. Kelsey is particularly helpful and we THANK YOU for that! Read Less
