Took "The Minkers" in for an eye issue and Dr. Kong was the perfect vet for my sweet, mellow kitty. We ended up having to get some tests done but they were done efficiently and with very little stress to Minky. In addition to being impressed by her calm and gentle manner with my cat, I appreciated Dr. Kong's clear explanation of what needed to be investigated, why, and what the potential results might mean for my senior cat's quality of life going forward. I can confidently give them 5 stars! There front desk team is so caring, comforting and informative! The doctors are so amazing and go above and beyond! My puppy was so sick today and they made us feel like a priority, they worked so hard to sort out what was wrong with him. I know because they squeezed him in because he was so sick, Dr Jill ran behind and I felt terrible. But at no point did she seem rushed or non attentive to us. She was so sweet and really reassured me he would be okay! I'm so glad that I have such an a amazing clinic to go to with our dogs. I feel extremely confident they will have the best care. This vet sent me a sympathy card when they heard my cat died!! They weren't even involved in the final moments (it was a late night incident and they weren't open so I made the mistake of going back to my old vet (Alta Vista.. just don't). But it was them I called in the morning when I needed to know what to do with my baby's body. Erin, who answered my call, said "I'm so sorry to hear... just bring him and we'll help you deal with everything." I decided instead to bury him in the yard (with many previous pets) and didn't follow up with the vet. BUT, Erin obviously mentioned my loss (tears) to the vet who did most of the care for my baby through his many mishaps and she wrote a personalized card to my family. OK, I'm crying as I write this! The vet who misdiagnosed him and that I had several calls with to understand what happened, didn't acknowledge... but Dr. L Sofronia (who signed it "Luliana" :) mailed a card with her condolences. I can't get over it. That's personal care. I'm not really surprised because all the staff at Amherst loved my cat and showed it at every visit. This is what you want from a vet. Read Less

Definitely review-worthy. The vets and staff love what they do here and it shows. We have been taking our dogs Gracie and Rosie (and Dakota) here since 2007. We've had the fortunate genuine care and expertise from Drs. Speyer and Beneke from general check ups and ailments, dental cleaning, to surgical procedures. The team at Amherst (Kristina, Tracy, Leann, Marie, Mary Ann, Jaime, Jess...) have been professional, friendly, caring, transparent and Drs. Speyer and Beneke's approach to addressing concerns and treatment has been thorough and in layman's terms. My cat Gavin stopped eating for no apparent reason back in March and dropped a lot of weight. We took him in and the vets as well as the rest of the staff were amazing. Gavin was the stubbornest of animals and it seemed like he just didn't want to get better regardless of the treatments (meds, had to put a tube in him) and he was highly sensitive to many of the medications. When we were about to put him down because we didn't want to cause him more pain or suffering. The vets there asked for just 3 more days and thank goodness that they did! Day 3 Gavin started bouncing back and now he's happy and healthy running around the house. Our family has taken all our pets to Amherst, cats and dogs, from 1990 until recently when we moved to Victoria. It is no exaggeration to say that the staff at Amherst, Drs. Cumberbirch and Speyer and their team, are one of the biggest losses in this moving transition. They always provided our animals with the most attentive care while also seeing to our needs as pet owners concerned about our dear animals. Over the years they provided thoughtful discussions that left us understanding important choices about treatment as well as the assurance that they would back us up in our decisions. Four dogs and two cats later I can say that never once did I experience anything but excellent and competent care from the beginning of our animals' lives to their last moments with us. Our family loves Amherst and its staff (well, the humans do though the animals can be excused for not being thrilled when they have to go to any place and get examined)!  Over the past 25 years we have been in the capable hands of Drs. Cumberbirch and Speyer who have unfailingly given our cats and dogs impeccable care.  They are always a fund of medical information, able to discuss complicated medical and attendant emotional issues and handled our animals with gentleness every time.  They are incredible when the inevitable final chapter in an animal's life comes, helping to determine the time when quality of life fades.  I still go back in my mind to things they said to me that were both helpful and comforting. In my books they get an unconditional 5 star rating as do all their staff. Read Less

Our family's cats have been regulars at Amherst after a number of trial and error attempts with other vets with our first cat over 15 years ago.We always, ALWAYS try to get our cats in with Dr. Yuen. She is extremely calm and gentle with the animals, but what my family really likes about her is how ethical she is. Most other vets (including some of her colleagues unfortunately), give off the impression that they're out to screw pet-owners for every penny that they've got by recommending expensive treatments and tests, yet provide little explanation as to why they're necessary. Dr. Yuen on the other hand, has always been up front about which treatments she thinks are necessary or not, and takes the time to listen to each animal's unique circumstances and symptoms before recommending a course of action. We also really appreciated her understanding and sympathy when our first cat passed away. She sent us a lovely note of condolence, and took the time to write a personal message with her memories of treating him. She was an all-star during the whole process when he was ill by taking our phone calls and providing us with many different options on how to best care for him in his last few months.Other than Dr. Yuen, the other vets at Amherst range from acceptable to...well...not very friendly. That being said, the receptionists and admin staff have always been really pleasant to deal with and the facilities are clean and spacious...lots of room for pets to rest. I think it's just a foregone conclusion that vet services WILL be expensive no matter where you go, so the most important thing is to find a vet that you trust and that you and your pet are comfortable with! I went to Amherst vet yesterday for the first time and was very pleased with my visit to this business! The front end staff were very pleasant and accommodating and the doctor was very professional and knowledgeable about my dog. We needed to run some tests which I prepaid for to have them all done. They found the problem on the second test or so and did not have to finish with the other tests so they reimbursed me for these! Never have I seen a vet office so honest and not trying to rip you off and make money. The gave me back money in the form of a credit which I needed for the prescription. I will absolutely be returning to this vet and recommend you do as well. The service was enjoyable even with a sick dog and prompt, I had results within hours from their in house laboratory. Very good at what they do, but also kind, gentle, and friendly, which does not seem to be common with vets elsewhere. They are also understanding when it cones to the cost factor, so when they did testing when my dog was sick, not eating, and lethargic, they did one test at a time, and waited to see if that was it instead of doing ten tests at once. they always phoned m with updates and to ask my opinion on whether I wanted other tests done. Our cat's been a patient at Amherst ever since we moved to Vancouver. I have to say that, initially, I was put off by the insane cost of some very basic exams and treatments. But I have since learned that this seems to be a Canadian or, at least, a Vancouver problem, and that Amherst's bills are not at all extraordinary (that maybe just as a hint for new 'Canadians'). Aside from this, I've always felt very good about this clinic. The staff are always friendly and very helpful and the vets certainly very knowledgeable and approachable. I've had the best experiences with Dr. McLean, but have also dealt with two other doctors in the past, and have generally had only positive experiences. I did very rarely feel like there was the slightest hint of an 'up-sell' going on when talking to some of the vets, which is why they don't get the full star-age from me, but the issue was never pressed. As far as the results go, our cat's alive and well and has never come back from the vet as well recovered and, not least, groomed, as he has in the past two years being looked after at Amherst. I would definitely recommend them. Read Less

Their love for animals is evident and it's always comforting to see how well they interact with our dogs. Their fees are a little higher but worth every penny. Thank you for your love and care for our fur babies. We so appreciate all that you do to maintain the health and well-being of our beloved pets. Karen & Joe,  (Gracie, Rosie & Dakota) Read Less

Thank you to the staff at Amherst! Thanks to your love, care and compassion Gavin is still with us. Read Less

My puppy stepped on a bee and got stung in his paw, they were fully booked when call in booking appointment for that day,so they have to put us the next morning.Since the sting was still in his paw,I walked in asked for quick advice.By the time I arrived there, they were almost closed,so the doctor could take a quick look and give a quick check on my puppy. They took my puppy to the room, and after 5 minutes, doctor Yuen came out, holding my puppy in her arms and with the pulled-out sting in a tweezer holding in her hand. And she told me my puppy is doing great, everthing is normal,i just need to give him some benedryl after I got home to prevent if something happen over night.I was touched and could not be more appreciated, I really don't know what to say but being truly grateful! They are my life saver! Thank you Amherst! Read Less

Read Less

The staff at Amherst are amazing. My dear 19 year cat had come to the end of her life and I had to make a very difficult decision. I selected home euthanasia and needed to find a vet in Vancouver that would accommodate my request..... I came across Amherst Veterinary Hospital. The compassion and kindness that was extended towards me and my dear little Kiah far exceeded my expectations. They brought a gentle and caring attitude into my home. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Shortly thereafter I received a personally hand written card from these two women expressing their condolences. Nothing else to say....but thank you. I have been taking my cat to Amherst for a few years. As an indoor cat, she has required very little care. However, that recently changed and she has a very rare condition - incontinence. The doctors have gone above & beyond trying to find answers and suggested treatments. They have been in touch with me regularly and have spent lots of time researching her condition. We haven't got it figured out quite yet, but I feel that they are doing absolutely everything in their power to help me find answers and treat my furry friend. Also, every single person that works at the Clinic is without fail cheery, friendly and helpful - on the phone and in person. If you are looking for a vet that isn't about dollars & cents, that truly cares about your animal, pick this one!! Read Less

Great place. Thank you for your kind and honest business. Read Less

I love this place! I went to 3 different vets and was very dissatisfied before I found Amherst. I usually go to Dr. Watkins, but have also seen a few others and thy were all great. When I got the bill there were no surprises. I highly recommend this vet clinic! Read Less

Read Less
