The owners of this establishment take full advantage of the fact there are no other veterinary clinics in the area. This lets them take liberties with their service and still keep customers who would otherwise take their pets elsewhere. Like people in a doctor's office, the people who bring their pets to a vet would probably rather be somewhere else. Double ditto for their hirsute companions. Doctors, and veterinarians, who forget this tend to be remembered by their patients and customers...for all the wrong reasons. The problem with the vets at Blue Cross Pet Hospital is not so much that they are incompetent (they are reasonably good at their job) but their blatantly greedy disposition and the propensity to unapologetically nickel and dime the people trusting their animals to their care. Raising prices without notice, suddenly demanding long term customers with a perfect payment history prepay for special ordered medication and food, adding procedures without properly informing customers beforehand, long wait times for special orders and telling an elderly customer who has just dropped a few grand at their clinic that carrying a balance on an invoice is out of the question while a person at the front counter is in the process of paying off the last instalment of her bill. Not good. Treating honest people who've been bringing their pets to your clinic long before you bought it from the original owner (and always promptly settling all their bills) like deadbeats and finding underhanded ways to squeeze more money out of them is pretty appalling behaviour by any customer service standard. Yet it is the new norm at BCPH. It's an animal hospital not an investment bank and if making a ton of cash is your goal, it's probably not the right business for you. Guess what? People notice the greedy, disrespectful attitude and tell their families and friends about it...and will bail on your business as soon as a more convenient option presents itself. My advice is drop the money grubbing BS and too-cool-for-skool demeanour (particularly Fidel, the dude vet), brush up on your social skills and treat your customers with basic respect.

I would highly recommend this clinic. Both Dr. Faltyn and Dr. Murphy have been great with my older cat both in handling and treatment. They welcome questions and will keep in touch to see how your pet is doing and to give results of tests. The staff are great also. Only drawback is the clinic doesn't have parking so you have to find street parking.There are ways around this however such as dropping your pet off then finding parking (I can do this with my cat so I don't have to carry her too far).Their pricing is comparative to other clinics.

Switched from Urban Animal Hospital when we moved to Sunrise Hastings area, to Blue Cross Pet Hospital. Have recently switched back to Urban. My reason: much better service, caring and patient staff AND a place that can actually fit you in to see the vet in an emergency. Each and every time I have called Blue Cross with an emergency I have been turned away as told completely booked up, or directed to an emergency hospital many km away, or booked in days later and on cancellation list. Well, all unsatisfactory, and makes me wonder how compassionate of a hospital this really is? Urban will always squeeze us in and Dr. Kim is an excellent vet with a gentle disposition. My dogs love him. If you have a car, and don't mind going out of your way a bit (even worth the taxi fare for quality of service received), I suggest you check out Urban Animal Hospital. Always doing their best to give your pet the loving care and attention they deserve!

I had been coming to the Hospital for a couple of years just to buy my cat his special food, but when I moved within walking distance of the Hospital I decided to make it my cat's regular vet clinic. All of the staff and both of the vets here are super friendly and caring. The prices are really reasonable, but it's the level of care that has impressed me. My cat had a dental surgery here and some tests for a urinary issue and I've been so impressed at the time I'm given. The vets here spend lots of time with you in person and are also great with phone follow-up. I've never felt pressured to get procedures/tests that were not necessary. I've also witnessed staff being super patient and very polite with other client's when I've been waiting. Blue Cross is an awesome neighbourhood vet that I would totally recommend!

Dr. Murphy I liked. My previous experience was that he is knowledgeable and mindful of the costs incurred.My more recent experience was frustrating. I do not feel there was consideration with respect to cost. In a pinch I had to visit Dr. Faltyn who would not give me her medical opinion with respect to narrowing down treatment options, but instead kept repeating the list of things I could spend money on to rule out different problems with my cat (I had already spent about $300 at Blue Cross at this point). I suggested that one of her theories of what was wrong did not apply to my cat, because I know my cat and didn't think it fit the bill. The reply was, well I know cats too. According to her profile on their website, she does not have a cat. Just saying. When I attend at a medical professional's office, I'd like an opinion as to which direction to take for treatment. Isn't that what I'm paying for?Worth a try if it's convenient. If you have a cat, see Dr. Murphy.

The people who took over BCPH from Dr. Hartney have made it clear over the years that making an extra buck is more important to them than the welfare of animals. They are a business, yes, and they also provide a much needed service used by people from across the income spectrum.
My elderly parents are among them and are living of their modest retirement savings in a very expensive city. They have always paid BCPH for services rendered and for medication and supplies and never carried a balance. They have been customers there for over 15 years.
And yet BCPH sees fit to nickel and dime them and other people and other people in similar circumstances by raising prices without warning, charging hefty fees on split orders and changing policy without warning and demanding upfront payment before ordering medication. From reliable long-time customers who never carry a balance who have spent several thousand dollars at the clinic.
This greedy behaviour is shameful and reflects badly on the owner-operators. I will no longer be recommending BCPH to friends and acquaintances.

While I've moved much further away from this vet than seems reasonable to travel, I will continue to go to them for any and all pets. No other vet has provided the care and compassion that this one has, and I've attempted relationships at several closer to home.

There aren't many vets I trust. The folks at Lynne Valley Vet get my respect, along side Blue Cross. I never knew the management and owners until Dr. Murphy and Dr. Faltyn took over- but it's my #1 choice. Dr. M has a very approachable, laid back and no nonsense style. He doesn't sugar coat the issue or mess around; his style is confident and friendly. My cats were always at ease with him and I've seen him handle some really crazy cats and come out like a cat charmer! It's nice to have a neighborhood clinic where I feel comfortable and have absolutely no qualms about leaving my pet in their hands. Price are on par- if you're looking for bargain basement prices that go along with shoddy care, look elsewhere. I have never felt gouged but I also know that vet care isn't cheap in the long run. Blue Cross delivers a high standard of care I need for my little fur ball and I'm happy to go there.

I had been to a different vet the day before and hadn't been that confident in where we were going, though had a completely different experience with Dr. Faltyn. She explained what she wanted to test for and why. She was great with our kitty, very thorough in her exam as well. Dr. Faltyn called me the next day to go over the results and another person there called again today just to check in and make sure things were ok. Fantastic staff and brilliant vet!

All the staff here are great, from the receptionist to the techs to Dr Faltyn. We took our cat in due to a tooth that she was resorbing. Dr Faltyn spent at least half an hour examining her and thoroughly explaining everything that needed to be done. We are very protective cat owners, but her warm manner put us at ease.The day before surgery, the hospital called to remind us of the appointment and what we had to do to prepare. Then Dr Faltyn called herself to explain further. On the day of the surgery, Dr Faltyn called again the moment the procedure was finished to tell us that everything went well, and what the next steps would be. Instructions for the medication were clearly explained to us. They also handled everything with our insurance company. I simply gave them the claims form and they took care of it.Hopefully it will be a long time before we have to go to the vet again, but we will definitely use Blue Cross from now on!

If you live near the Hastings Sunrise area I highly recommend making Blue Cross Pet Hospital your little fur babies choice veterinarians. From the vet techs to the vets themselves they treat you and your pet well. My little hound loves going to the vet. Could not imagine why but she does and it is because the way she is treated there. Have been seeing them now for almost a year and have experienced some challenging times with my hound and they helped us overcome what turned out to be an allergy. Dr Murphy is my favourite and Dr Faltyn is pretty good too. I find Dr Murphy more straight to the point and move on which I appreciate most days.

Easily one of the best vets I have ever visited. Dr. Murphy was very friendly and gentle with my cat who had lost a sizable amount of weight. The Dr. was very calming and my cat never became stressed during the visit. He very quickly made a couple suggestions as to the diagnosis (which were confirmed) and suggested a blood test to confirm (which returned exactly as he thought). The Dr. was not pushy, described all the possible risks, benefits and costs and left it to me to determine the best course of action. My cat improved immediately after visiting and is thriving. I highly recommend the vet.

***EDIT*** Just called up and I'm so relieved to hear that the vet in question in my earlier review didn't work out and was only there temporarily! So I'll be keeping them as my regular vet, and bumping my # of stars up to the level they would've had originally. Hooray!---I actually thought I had written Blue Cross a really good review a few years ago, because I switched my dog to them about 5-6 years ago and was pleased at how Dr. Hartney gave thorough, thoughtful responses to all my questions. I never felt pressured to purchase anything (whereas at Oak Animal Hospital I had experienced serious pressure to buy supplements and food and get random tests done) and have always found the staff friendly and fun. Plus the cat that lives there is awesome.I went back today for routine vaccinations, and was looking forward to telling Dr. Hartney or the other vet who I've seen there about how I'd managed to solve my dog's obsessive paw-licking by switching to a raw food diet, something I was pretty proud about as we'd been trying to solve it for over a year. (They had already suggested I try home-cooked pork and potato, but it coincidentally turned out the ingredient my dog was allergic to WAS potato, so that hadn't solved it!)Dr. Hartney seems to be away indefinitely at the moment, and there was a different vet there that I'd never seen before. When I told him how I'd figured out the problem, he practically rolled his eyes and started trying to convince me that their vet-prescribed food is far superior. I told him that my dog had BEEN on that once and his health had improved after I switched off of it; I told him some of my concerns about the packaged dog food. He basically told me that it doesn't matter that one of the main ingredients in the food is corn, it's the quality that counts. That it's all very well and good for me to do my research, but I should consider the advice of one who's researched behind the research.It was so patronizing and such a cheap sales tactic that I've seen at other vets before, and I found myself coldly angry. I've trusted Blue Cross for five years but I will NOT go back if this same vet is still working there. Very, very disappointed.

The owners of this establishment take full advantage of the fact there are no other veterinary clinics in the area. This lets them take liberties with their service and still keep customers who would otherwise take their pets elsewhere. Like people in a doctor's office, the people who bring their pets to a vet would probably rather be somewhere else. Double ditto for their hirsute companions. Doctors, and veterinarians, who forget this tend to be remembered by their patients and customers...for all the wrong reasons. The problem with the vets at Blue Cross Pet Hospital is not so much that they are incompetent (they are reasonably good at their job) but their blatantly greedy disposition and the propensity to unapologetically nickel and dime the people trusting their animals to their care. Raising prices without notice, suddenly demanding long term customers with a perfect payment history prepay for special ordered medication and food, adding procedures without properly informing customers beforehand, long wait times for special orders and telling an elderly customer who has just dropped a few grand at their clinic that carrying a balance on an invoice is out of the question while a person at the front counter is in the process of paying off the last instalment of her bill. Not good. Treating honest people who've been bringing their pets to your clinic long before you bought it from the original owner (and always promptly settling all their bills) like deadbeats and finding underhanded ways to squeeze more money out of them is pretty appalling behaviour by any customer service standard. Yet it is the new norm at BCPH. It's an animal hospital not an investment bank and if making a ton of cash is your goal, it's probably not the right business for you. Guess what? People notice the greedy, disrespectful attitude and tell their families and friends about it...and will bail on your business as soon as a more convenient option presents itself. My advice is drop the money grubbing BS and too-cool-for-skool demeanour (particularly Fidel, the dude vet), brush up on your social skills and treat your customers with basic respect.

I would highly recommend this clinic. Both Dr. Faltyn and Dr. Murphy have been great with my older cat both in handling and treatment. They welcome questions and will keep in touch to see how your pet is doing and to give results of tests. The staff are great also. Only drawback is the clinic doesn't have parking so you have to find street parking.There are ways around this however such as dropping your pet off then finding parking (I can do this with my cat so I don't have to carry her too far).Their pricing is comparative to other clinics.

Switched from Urban Animal Hospital when we moved to Sunrise Hastings area, to Blue Cross Pet Hospital. Have recently switched back to Urban. My reason: much better service, caring and patient staff AND a place that can actually fit you in to see the vet in an emergency. Each and every time I have called Blue Cross with an emergency I have been turned away as told completely booked up, or directed to an emergency hospital many km away, or booked in days later and on cancellation list. Well, all unsatisfactory, and makes me wonder how compassionate of a hospital this really is? Urban will always squeeze us in and Dr. Kim is an excellent vet with a gentle disposition. My dogs love him. If you have a car, and don't mind going out of your way a bit (even worth the taxi fare for quality of service received), I suggest you check out Urban Animal Hospital. Always doing their best to give your pet the loving care and attention they deserve!

I had been coming to the Hospital for a couple of years just to buy my cat his special food, but when I moved within walking distance of the Hospital I decided to make it my cat's regular vet clinic. All of the staff and both of the vets here are super friendly and caring. The prices are really reasonable, but it's the level of care that has impressed me. My cat had a dental surgery here and some tests for a urinary issue and I've been so impressed at the time I'm given. The vets here spend lots of time with you in person and are also great with phone follow-up. I've never felt pressured to get procedures/tests that were not necessary. I've also witnessed staff being super patient and very polite with other client's when I've been waiting. Blue Cross is an awesome neighbourhood vet that I would totally recommend!

I do not feel there was consideration with respect to cost. In a pinch I had to visit Dr. Faltyn who would not give me her medical opinion with respect to narrowing down treatment options, but instead kept repeating the list of things I could spend money on to rule out different problems with my cat (I had already spent about $300 at Blue Cross at this point). I suggested that one of her theories of what was wrong did not apply to my cat, because I know my cat and didn't think it fit the bill. The reply was, well I know cats too. According to her profile on their website, she does not have a cat. Just saying. When I attend at a medical professional's office, I'd like an opinion as to which direction to take for treatment. Isn't that what I'm paying for?Worth a try if it's convenient. If you have a cat, see Dr. Murphy.

The people who took over BCPH from Dr. Hartney have made it clear over the years that making an extra buck is more important to them than the welfare of animals. They are a business, yes, and they also provide a much needed service used by people from across the income spectrum.
My elderly parents are among them and are living of their modest retirement savings in a very expensive city. They have always paid BCPH for services rendered and for medication and supplies and never carried a balance. They have been customers there for over 15 years.
And yet BCPH sees fit to nickel and dime them and other people and other people in similar circumstances by raising prices without warning, charging hefty fees on split orders and changing policy without warning and demanding upfront payment before ordering medication. From reliable long-time customers who never carry a balance who have spent several thousand dollars at the clinic.
This greedy behaviour is shameful and reflects badly on the owner-operators. I will no longer be recommending BCPH to friends and acquaintances.

While I've moved much further away from this vet than seems reasonable to travel, I will continue to go to them for any and all pets. No other vet has provided the care and compassion that this one has, and I've attempted relationships at several closer to home.

There aren't many vets I trust. The folks at Lynne Valley Vet get my respect, along side Blue Cross. I never knew the management and owners until Dr. Murphy and Dr. Faltyn took over- but it's my #1 choice. Dr. M has a very approachable, laid back and no nonsense style. He doesn't sugar coat the issue or mess around; his style is confident and friendly. My cats were always at ease with him and I've seen him handle some really crazy cats and come out like a cat charmer! It's nice to have a neighborhood clinic where I feel comfortable and have absolutely no qualms about leaving my pet in their hands. Price are on par- if you're looking for bargain basement prices that go along with shoddy care, look elsewhere. I have never felt gouged but I also know that vet care isn't cheap in the long run. Blue Cross delivers a high standard of care I need for my little fur ball and I'm happy to go there.

I had been to a different vet the day before and hadn't been that confident in where we were going, though had a completely different experience with Dr. Faltyn. She explained what she wanted to test for and why. She was great with our kitty, very thorough in her exam as well. Dr. Faltyn called me the next day to go over the results and another person there called again today just to check in and make sure things were ok. Fantastic staff and brilliant vet!

All the staff here are great, from the receptionist to the techs to Dr Faltyn. We took our cat in due to a tooth that she was resorbing. Dr Faltyn spent at least half an hour examining her and thoroughly explaining everything that needed to be done. We are very protective cat owners, but her warm manner put us at ease.The day before surgery, the hospital called to remind us of the appointment and what we had to do to prepare. Then Dr Faltyn called herself to explain further. On the day of the surgery, Dr Faltyn called again the moment the procedure was finished to tell us that everything went well, and what the next steps would be. Instructions for the medication were clearly explained to us. They also handled everything with our insurance company. I simply gave them the claims form and they took care of it.Hopefully it will be a long time before we have to go to the vet again, but we will definitely use Blue Cross from now on!

If you live near the Hastings Sunrise area I highly recommend making Blue Cross Pet Hospital your little fur babies choice veterinarians. From the vet techs to the vets themselves they treat you and your pet well. My little hound loves going to the vet. Could not imagine why but she does and it is because the way she is treated there. Have been seeing them now for almost a year and have experienced some challenging times with my hound and they helped us overcome what turned out to be an allergy. Dr Murphy is my favourite and Dr Faltyn is pretty good too. I find Dr Murphy more straight to the point and move on which I appreciate most days.

Easily one of the best vets I have ever visited. Dr. Murphy was very friendly and gentle with my cat who had lost a sizable amount of weight. The Dr. was very calming and my cat never became stressed during the visit. He very quickly made a couple suggestions as to the diagnosis (which were confirmed) and suggested a blood test to confirm (which returned exactly as he thought). The Dr. was not pushy, described all the possible risks, benefits and costs and left it to me to determine the best course of action. My cat improved immediately after visiting and is thriving. I highly recommend the vet.

So I'll be keeping them as my regular vet, and bumping my # of stars up to the level they would've had originally. Hooray!---I actually thought I had written Blue Cross a really good review a few years ago, because I switched my dog to them about 5-6 years ago and was pleased at how Dr. Hartney gave thorough, thoughtful responses to all my questions. I never felt pressured to purchase anything (whereas at Oak Animal Hospital I had experienced serious pressure to buy supplements and food and get random tests done) and have always found the staff friendly and fun. Plus the cat that lives there is awesome.I went back today for routine vaccinations, and was looking forward to telling Dr. Hartney or the other vet who I've seen there about how I'd managed to solve my dog's obsessive paw-licking by switching to a raw food diet, something I was pretty proud about as we'd been trying to solve it for over a year. (They had already suggested I try home-cooked pork and potato, but it coincidentally turned out the ingredient my dog was allergic to WAS potato, so that hadn't solved it!)Dr. Hartney seems to be away indefinitely at the moment, and there was a different vet there that I'd never seen before. When I told him how I'd figured out the problem, he practically rolled his eyes and started trying to convince me that their vet-prescribed food is far superior. I told him that my dog had BEEN on that once and his health had improved after I switched off of it; I told him some of my concerns about the packaged dog food. He basically told me that it doesn't matter that one of the main ingredients in the food is corn, it's the quality that counts. That it's all very well and good for me to do my research, but I should consider the advice of one who's researched behind the research.It was so patronizing and such a cheap sales tactic that I've seen at other vets before, and I found myself coldly angry. I've trusted Blue Cross for five years but I will NOT go back if this same vet is still working there. Very, very disappointed.
