All of the staff here are super friendly and experienced! We've had quite a few health scares with our 15 year old schnauzer poodle but thanks to Hemlock Animal Hospital,Timmy is happy and healthy. It's very reasonably priced and they only recommend scans/tests that they think are actually necessary. Great experience. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable and prices are fair. I had to come in twice within a couple days of each other for vaccinating my cat. I forgot to get the rabies shot the first time so I had to come in again. The vet noticed this and gave me the discounted rate I would have gotten if I had gotten the rabies shot for the first appointment instead of having to pay the extra cost associated with another visit/appointment. We normally take our 9 year old goldendoodle to BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital for regular care, but weren’t available to address a large skin growth on short notice. Loved my experiences with this clinic. They were on of the only clinics I reached they were quick to get him in and always willing to go the extra mile. Kiki had some health issues in the beginning and even had to get a hernia surgery that was quickly scheduled and done perfectly. We had to put our poor old doggie down and wanted to do it at home. As it turned out, Dr Harry was available on short notice. We also requested our doggie's ashes. Here is the reason that I am giving a 1 star review. We were charged $997.00 - just three dollars short of one thousand dollars! JUST NEVER EVEN IF EMERGENCY, BRING YOUR PETS HERE! NEVER EVER EVER!!!!! I only write reviews if I’m really satisfied with the service or if the service was dreadful (even harmful in the case of Hemlock Hospital). I believe it is a must for this place, because it is DANGEROUS to bring your PETS here! my pet only felt worse after attending this hospital. I have mixed emotions about this place and staff especially. Assistants were really nice, friendly and helpfull, however Dr. Harjeet Makkar... I had my hamster surgery there and I would not recommend this place to hamster, dog or cat or any other pet owners at all. It all started when I noticed there is an outgrowth on the mouse of the hamster, and after a thorough research about what can it be there were 2 option: it was either a pappilome or cancer. I came to this hospital and being told the same by the Dr. Harjeet Makkar. He told that surgery was the only option. We also did a biopsy. After a biopsy (which was another ~100$) it turned out that my pet had a papillome (which is not dangerous for health at all) and Dr. Harjeet Makkar told that surgery was the only option. Off course $800 (and that's with the discount!) will not be superfluous in the pocket. It's just hilarious that a small and easy surgery which lasted about 10 minutes costed that much, however as a loving parent I didn't think soberly and just wanted to make my pet feel better. The “doctor” told that he could die any moment because of this, only added drama to the situation. If he is good at anything it is playing on worried parents’ emotions. Scar from the surgery resolved in a week or so, however the problems only started to occur. In about 2 weeks the hamster developed a lump at the point where he was injected with sedatives before the surgery. He never contacted with other hamsters, and he is a home pet as well, and never had these lumps before, so it was really the only place where he could get those from. Of course, we can’t be sure 100% that it happened because of the of the surgery but “doctor” denied even the possibility of it when we called with the issue. Another lump developed later. after communication with "Dr" Harjeet Makkar I felt like he just wanted a quick buck. I asked him once, how much would the surgery cost and he didn't reply. I asked him twice, and still didn't get the answer. He nicely escaped the question, julged and changed the topic of conversation when I was only considering surgery. However, he was very assertive when I hesitated about the surgery, and told me that it is the only option. (WHEN IT WAS NOT!!! AND it was actually better not to do the surgery, just biopsy, which is $700 cheaper!) So, I asked if is going to be under $500 (To be honest I thought it shouldn't have been over 200$ for a tiny hamster ( 66 g. ) and he said that it is going to be more expensive. (he probably checked how much I was ready to spend) I had a phone call with him when I noticed those lumps about my pet's condition and received this reply from the same doctor. Quote on quote "We did our job, we cut the thing out, it's not our problem anymore". When I told him (in the same phone conversation) that lumps occurred right after the surgery, he told right away that it’s not his fault. I asked him “Can you diagnose this over the phone?” He didn’t reply my question, however he offered a consultation for another 50$. I told him that I’m not willing to pay for his service anymore, and eventually he offered it for free after another 20 minutes of proving my point. I did agree and next day I came to the clinic. As I expected he didn’t tell me anything for free. When he saw that the lump is at the same place where he did injection, he started to refuse that he did injection there. Hilarious. What’s more funny he ran away at the same moment to another room and said “I can’t help you anymore”. Ah yes I also asked for the refund a moment before and he just said “no” and looked at me like I’m an idiot. I only proved my theory that he only cares about money. A moment before I also mentioned that I red all the other negative reviews and asked him to show the workspace to make sure that it’s clean because he asked us to “trust him”. He just changed the topic once again. I mean if you have nothing to hide just show it; at least to calm down your customers. Oh yes, he insisted on another surgery when he saw those lumps. I asked him “So you can only diagnose the problem after the surgery?” He said “Yes. But I can give you discount”. I mean freaking discount?...... Draw your own conclusions folks if you want your pets to be treated well and safely. This place needs to be closed down because it harms animals. Read Less

They're very patient answering all our questions and attending to our concerns. You can tell they're passionate in what they do and took care of our baby very well. We're so grateful that we chose to bring our dogs here! We've worked with both Dr. Harry, and several members of the staff. In November 2020, one of our dogs became seriously ill very quickly, and we were able to get into an emergency opening and the staff acted very quickly to ensure that we were able to get him to a specialty emergency hospital and the urgent care he needed. Our other dog is extremely nervous around strangers (especially vets) and the staff always goes above and beyond to make sure that his best interests are always first, and that the experience is as quick and calm as possible for him. They've also answered questions by phone or email (to avoid bringing him in), and take the time to explain complex medical jargon to the "parents." Recently my dog went in for surgery and I was terrified. Dr. Harry was the veterinarian that did the surgery. I have a very small light weight petite dog and I have been to several places to get quotes on teeth removal. After, a lot of thought I decided it was the best decision for my pet. I adopted my cat from them 2 years ago. Took my cat in for a growth on her side. place was clean and friendly. the room was nice and warm and my scardy cat was comfortable enough to sit in the corner under the chair. Dr Harry is who I go to when I need full and straight answers, compassionate service, and a very high standard of competence and care. I have almost 20 years of experience with companion animal care and over those years I have seen many veterinarians, and Dr Harry is very high on my best-of list. I don't live anywhere near the clinic but I travel there because I know that my animals will receive excellent service, and I do not have to worry about what he isn't telling me or considering (because he explains everything in great detail and answers every possible question I can come up with, which I really appreciate!), what options we haven't explored (he gives me all the options), or whether I'm being overcharged. I highly recommend this Vet Hospital, and also highly recommend Dr Harry. My puppy was coughing terribly the other night and we took him to the VCA Emergency and they suspected Kennel Cough, gave us cough syrup and sent us home. That night was horrible, our puppy was coughing and hacking stuff up all night. I wasn't feeling right about the original diagnosis and took him into to see our regular vet, DR Harry Not only did he make time for him that day when he heard his symptoms, but after seeing how sick our dog was he knew right away it was something more then just cough syrup needed. He had pneumonia, and was a very sick puppy. He was so friendly and patient with our puppy (who isn't a fan of body handling) and was extremely informative about what was going on. He personally phoned us later that evening after he was sent home to check on him, and again the following morning, and afternoon. You can tell he really cares about the animals he helps, and it makes a scary situation with your animal better. After his knowledge and treatment and care our puppy is doing so much better in a matter of days. We won't ever take our puppy, or any other animals we have or will have in the future, anywhere else. I am very, extremely vigilant when it comes to choosing my Vet and the clinic. My best friend is a vet in Dublin and I used to work for her when she had a practice in Calgary. I am in love with my dog, Louis, who's very healthy. I randomly needed a vet in Jan/18 on a Sunday. I called Hemlock thinking they would be closed - no they weren't and they saw my dog right away.There was no way I was taking my dog to the Emerg Clinic because their charges are ridiculous. A short exam, blood taken, my dog was fine. The blood results were emailed to me in their entirety, not a summary, but the full blood panel results. My dog was fine. Then my dog was having mouth sensitivity. I went back to Hemlock in August/18 because Dr. Harry is amazing. As it turned out he needed a full teeth cleaning. I was expecting the charge to be well over $1K - not even close. Louis was under anesthetic, x-rays taken, two teeth removed, which couldn't be saved, more blood work and the little guy was fine. On top of the amazing price, I received another bonus for paying in cash. Today, I took poochie in to have his eye checked. Dr. Harry explained the procedure completely. I stayed in the exam room holding Louis. No problems. My dog was not uncomfortable or agitated. The examination was thorough and smooth. The price for the exam, eye drops, and a can of food was well below $100. Dr. Harry is thorough, a good vet - he will book a specialists if an issue is outside of his expertise or outside of the equipment he has on hand, Hemlock has an x-ray machine, full operating theatre and ultra-sound equipment. Dr. Harry can pretty much do anything. The exam rates are beyond reasonable. You don't need to pay $80-$120 for an exam fee. I was reading a couple of the reviews. If you feel your dog is being held too tightly or if you don't understand something that is happening, you have a voice. Dr. Harry will explain anything and everything to you. The team at this office is an amazing group of people. Dr. Harry and his staff went above and beyond for our family. They always were happy to answer questions and Dr. Harry, took the time to speak with me over the phone on several occasions for extended periods of time, when I'm sure he was very busy otherwise. The level of care is truly exemplary. Everything they do shows that they want to provide the best possible care for your pets. After a visit we would always receive a follow up phone call just to make sure things were going ok. I really love this Vet! The assistants/techs are so kind and I can easily tell they really love animals. I have brought my cats here 2 times, once for a urinary blockage in my male cat, and recently for teeth cleaning for both. With the blockage Dr.Harry was not pushy and not quick to over diagnose or jump to surgery. He had a complete blockage  previously that required surgery (at a different vet), but this time some urine was still passing through, so Dr.Harry put him on some muscle relaxers and it worked! It cleared itself and we changed his food to a urinary diet and he has been great since :)For the teeth cleaning, one of my cats is a sphynx, which sometimes have a reaction to ketamine. I asked if they could use something different, and they said yes and noted it on her file. They can home happy, healthy, and with sparkly teeth :) The prices are very fair, and Dr.Harry works WITH you to get you the best possible care for your animal, that works for you and your budget. Do not take your animal to this place for surgery!Had my dog in to remove some teeth 3 months ago she was healthy now she cant breath they gave her way too much  sedation medicine and when i came back to get xrays  he was ready to give me more useless exames and creams that will do nothing for her heart.They reminded me of a dirty mechanic shop but they prey on peoples heart strings and see animals as a paycheck nothing more. Hemlock Animal HospitalDr. Harjeet Makkar(AKA Dr. Harry)We have been going to Hemlock Animal Hospital for approximately 6 years with our two beautiful golden doodles Tico and Sunny. We have always been impressed with the great care our dogs have received at this veterinary clinic compared to others we've visited. As soon as we arrive we are greeted by one of the friendly veterinary assistants. Shortly after when Dr. Harjeet Makkar arrives (aka Dr. Harry), his relaxed demeanor puts our dogs at ease. He always approaches our dogs with kindness and respect and they have come to trust him. Recently Tico acquired a very bad prostate infection that was quickly diagnosed by Dr. Harry and as a result, Tico is back to his usual happy self again. As a skillful surgeon, Dr. Harry repaired Tico's tail from an injury. He was up front with us and told us that it would be a difficult surgery and that he may lose his tail. Dr. Harry skillfully worked on his tail and saved the whole tail. We were so pleased to see him afterwards...tail intact! Sunny had a psychological issue that caused her to gnaw on her legs and tear the skin open. Dr. Harry also repaired these injuries perfectly but more importantly, he knew that this was a psychological issue. This was instrumental to us as it helped us deal with her recovery! He has spayed and neutered both our little ones with no post-operative complications.Dr. Harry is an experienced veterinarian/surgeon. He is not over-reactive with his diagnoses and his prices are very reasonable. Dr. Harry always has the best interest of our little ones in mind. Often times, while we are in the waiting room, we meet other clients that bring their pets to see Dr. Harry. DO NOT ADOPT A KITTEN FROM THIS PLACE!!!   We adopted a kitten here and quickly found out that it had ringworm.  I went back to the Dr Harry and had many arguments with him until he reluctantly agreed to treat the kitten.   He offered to switch the kitten with another and i refused.  Beside the fact that my kids had already bonded with this kitten and had suffered contacting ringworm from the kitten, i had the feeling that he would have destroyed the kitten or tried to adopt it out to another family without treatment.   Really?  He should have closed down his hospital until the ringworm was dealt with.   I told him how unethical it was to continue to adopt out the kittens in this group and he completely ignored me. We've been taking our pets here for many years after not being able to see a Vet in our previous clinic during an emergency for our husky/malamute. We were given an appointment within 20 minutes and have been bringing our furry family members here since. Dr. Harry is fantastic and very caring. Super shady place. I used to buy my food there until they started changing the price, depending on who was working the counter. Each person guaranteed they were the one doing it correctly, even though it would be a 20.00 difference. Last time the person working the counter was also going in and out of a surgery room (didn't see him ever wash his hands, nor do I think he had time to), helping the vet during a surgery (that's what he said), while ringing me up and asking the vet about the correct pricing for food and how to ring it up properly. I would not be okay with this if it was my pet having surgery. I would want to have my vet totally focused with sanitary workers. I left thinking, I hope people don't actually bring their beloved pet her. So glad I have a highly rated, professional Vet that has always given my animal the best treatment. Read Less

The staff at this clinic are amongst the best I have seen in the veterinary field. We were new patients with a problem and they took us in immediately and treated us and our pup as if we were long-time clients. The information we were given was clear and concise, leaving no doubt whatsoever that we had made the right decision in taking her to them. Dr. Harry was informative, but I think the thing I appreciated the most was his honesty in explaining that certain tests did not HAVE to be done, but were our choice. Hi all animal lovers. We wanted to adopt a kitten and found this place. When we asked about where did they get these kittens and their family history like if the parent cats had some sickness etc they stopped answering us and they suddenly said the kitten we wanted to adopt was given to someone else!They didn't answer our questions and when we went to store to talk with Dr to find out what happened the receptionist said the doctor is so busy but we could actually see he was just watching us behind the window. He appeared at the front desk as soon as we left the shop and just watched us leave.It is so disrespectful. They just needed to be clear and honest. Parent cats might have some sickness or not, totally normal but you should just tell the truth, don't try to scam people!!! Seeing other reviews about this place and other people's complaints about how their newly adopted cat was sick eventually, it is obvious to me that these guys are selling poor ill cats and just care about the $$$. and if you happen to ask about their history or origin before the adoption that cat you want may suddenly be taken by someone else! I went here when I couldn't get an appt at another vet due to it being a week end and a last minute appointment.The male reception/ vet tech is quite lovely and nice but Dr. Harry, less so.He was rough and unfriendly with my dog and suggested, after a quick exam that my dog had an enlarged prostate, for which I'd need an x-ray, blood work and a urine test. I didn't feel comfortable with that, at which point he seemed completely done with me. He didn't explain possible causes or a moderate approach. He also suggested I at least get antibiotics for my dog.I left and called back an hour later to have the antibiotic prescription filled, out of worry for my dog. Dr. Harry got on the phone, told me the price and then said he'd give my dog 10 days' worth and if his symptoms cleared up, that I would need another 10 days' worth. This seemed odd to me. In humans, usually 10 days of antibiotics is enough. I cancelled the request and took my dog to a better vet.Turns out my dog had absolutely nothing medically wrong with him that requires meds- his body was just doing something normal for an un-neutered dog. And his prostate is not enlarged.Vets clinics such as this one make people wary of vets. To unnecessarily put my dog on antibiotics is reprehensible. Do not be fooled by the ease of getting an appointment here or the low cost of an exam. They will overcharge for medications and procedures that are completely unnecessary. My girlfriend and I have been taking our GSD, Ember, here for about a year and a half now after we experienced some sticker shock from other vets in the area. Hemlock offered us prompt and professional service with excellent communication at a cost that was about half of what we were quoted at downtown and yaletown vets. We've had the pleasure of having a good relationship with this clinic since our boys were pups. They've been quite good at managing their two very unique temperaments. They're quite accommodating and despite us rarely needing to bring them in for anything more than the annual check up, they know the boys well. One of our boys is quite uncomfortable with people, and they've come up with a workable solution for him that keeps him and everyone safe and comfortable. DO NOT ADOPT KITTENI'm writing this review so people who want to rescue a cat won't end up having a sick kitten..it's very hard on the poor kitten and hard on the owner going back and forth to the vet. I found Hemlock Animal Hospital through Kijiji, they advertise kittens on this website. I've been searching Spca and Vokra but no luck for over a month so this was my last option. I went there to see the kittens and they told me I need to put $100 to hold if I like to get one of them and fill out an adoption form, if I'm eligible to get it, I will pay the rest of $175 and get the kitten next day. Since they had 3 of them, I took the form and went home to talk to my husband (bec. I read some bad reviews about adopting before I went there, didn't want to decide right away.) Oh, by the way, $275 had to be paid ONLY cash. Next day, I called them and said 'I'm only 20 min away and I will pay to hold the female kitten but I have one last question.' I asked 'where did you get the kittens and how is their health background?' Their staff didn't know and he said he has to ask the doctor who brought them here, I said 'ok, then can you ask and give me a callback, if everything is ok then I will come down'. He said 'Ok, Dr. will be in the office soon' and they never called back..an hour later I called back and another person said female kitten has adopted half an hour ago. How could this happen? What happened to the process? If somebody is really there to adopt, how come you forgot that I'm waiting for your call to come and get the kitten? After I explained what happened, I asked to speak to the doctor. This person also said he will call me back, of course, nobody did. We ended up going to their clinic to understand what is going on. Their staff who supposed to call back said he is 'very sorry' no other explanation, nothing else...Dr was inside, actually looking from the window mirror, didn't bother to come out and explain the situation... whatever we asked his staff, the only thing he kept saying was 'he is sorry' with an insolent, disrespectful and far from sincerity attitude. 20 min of just saying 'sorry' that's it..can you believe??..there is no explanation of why they never called, why they give the kitten! I fail to understand why Dr didn't come out and explain what happened and told us there are 2 other kittens to adopt? They don't even mention it..and that's all because I asked 'where did you get them..what is the health background?'...combining the reviews from past about selling sick kittens and this rude and nonsense attitude the only thing I can think of is they're really selling sick kittens..probably they thought I'm somebody who had already had an awful experience and digging it that's why they never answered anything. I recommend this vet clinic to anyone and everyone with a pet. I have two dogs, a large breed with kidney failure and a small dog. The entire staff here are fantastic, the vets take so much time to ensure you understand what's going on with your animal and that you know how to care for them. Once, we received a call to check in on our dog who had just had surgery from Dr. Harry on his day off, when the place was closed. When the large dog was diagnosed with kidney disease, they made sure we were fully comfortable with giving him fluids and let us practice with saline solution. Awesome experience here! I was very worried about bringing my senior cat to the vet as he is pretty skittish around new people but he did amazingly here! The smaller exam room helped him feel safe and less exposed and the ladies who checked him did a fantastic job!! He stayed very calm the entire time even during the blood work. Never go to this vet! I adopted my cat from here and every experience with them since has been terrible. The worst of it went as follows. I was taking my cat in for a checkup and when we arrived there was a very upset couple in the waiting area. It was obvious that they had just lost their pet. When it was our turn to head to the opperating room they had a this couples dead dog strapped to a table, with his eyes still open and tongue hanging out. They gave us no warning or anything. Not only was it shocking and sad, it was unprofessional to not warn us or perhaps cover the poor guy up? The place was also straight up disgusting. There was an overflowing garbage can full of half eaten McDonalds beside the dog and trash all over the place. They also sent my cat home dripping wet after getting neutered with really some questionable stitching. I will never go back and truly think this place needs to be shut down for sanitary reasons. I am very, extremely vigilant when it comes to choosing my Vet and the clinic. My best friend is a vet in Dublin and I used to work for her when she had a practice in Calgary. I am in love with my dog, Louis, who's very healthy. I randomly needed a vet in Jan/18 on a Sunday. I called Hemlock thinking they would be closed - no they weren't and they saw my dog right away.There was no way I was taking my dog to the Emerg Clinic because their charges are ridiculous. A short exam, blood taken, my dog was fine. The blood results were emailed to me in their entirety, not a summary, but the full blood panel results. My dog was fine. Then my dog was having mouth sensitivity. I went back to Hemlock in Feb/18 because Dr. Harry is amazing. As it turned out he needed a full teeth cleaning. I was expecting the charge to be well over $1K - not even close. Louis was under anesthetic, x-rays taken, two teeth removed, which couldn't be saved, more blood work and the little guy was fine. On top of the amazing price, I received another bonus for paying in cash. Today, I took poochie in to have his eye checked. Dr. Harry explained the procedure completely. I stayed in the exam room holding Louis. No problems. My dog was not uncomfortable or agitated. The examination was thorough and smooth. The price for the exam, eye drops, and a can of food was well below $100. Dr. Harry is thorough, a good vet - he will book a specialists if an issue is outside of his expertise or outside of the equipment he has on hand, Hemlock has an x-ray machine, full operating theatre and ultra-sound equipment. Dr. Harry can pretty much do anything. The exam rates are beyond reasonable. You don't need to pay $80-$120 for an exam fee. I was reading a couple of the reviews. If you feel your dog is being held too tightly or if you don't understand something that is happening, you have a voice. Dr. Harry will explain anything and everything to you. This vet should be shut down for unethical practice. I adopted a kitten on Dec 26th 2017. I was told the kitten had been there for 3 days. When we got him his first shots, we were told he had fleas- is it not best practice to prophylactically treat an animal for fleas upon arrival, to prevent them spreading?  I was told I could pick him up the following day after paying $295 CASH because that is all they would accept for an adoption fee - I thought only drug deals and con artists felt strictly in cash these days. When I called the next day to confirm a time to pick my little guy up, I was put on hold and told by the vet assistant that they wanted to hold him for 2-3 more days for 'observation'. When I asked what they suspected was wrong, they repeated 'we just want to make sure he's on'. The kicker is, it was going to cost me $150 per day.... on an animal I hadn't even brought home. I explained to the vet assistant that I was a nurse and had a regular vet I would take my cat to if I felt there was cause for concern. After an almost heated conversation, they 'allowed' me to pick up my kitten at 5pm. I was given a slip of paper with what was included in the adoption fee. Included was the spaying, deworming, nail trim, 6weeks pet insurance. About a week later, I noticed my 9week old kitten had tape worms coming out of his bum. I immediately took him to my regular vet who promptly told me that it was not something that could happen in a week. When I called hemlock animal, I was told by the vet that the kitten was treated as outlined in the slip of paper given to me the day I picked him up. I was told by my regular vet, who had an excellent reputation, that the documents sent by hemlock animal hospital did not relate to the slip of paper that was given to me by hemlock animal.When I called them back regarding this, I got into a screaming match with one of the vets. The vet finally offered to give me $120 dollars to cover the cost of having to treat my new kitten, but treat my existing cat as well! I told him he could mail me a cheque or money order, but he insisted on me coming in person to hemlock animal hospital this Saturday.Granted that I haven't been by to pick up my refund yet, but I do not trust these people as far as they can be thrown. Extremely shady business practices, extremely shady vets, and from the reviews of this place in the past, extremely spotty history.Not only have I posted this here, but I have also contacted the CVBC (collage of veterinarians of BC) to let them have a look at their records and practices. Five stars !! All of the Vets and staff at Hemlock Animal Hospital are knowledgeable and friendly. I generally see Dr. Harry (love, love him!!) but I have seen others when he was not in. I have also referred other people who have worked with different Doctors and they have been pleased. Their prices are very reasonable and they genuinely care about the dogs. Other Animal Hospitals I've been to in the Vancouver area seem to only care about the $$. They do not take the time to treat each dog as an individual. I had such an awful experience at this place.  I brought my dog to the hospital.  She wasn't feeling well and had been puking the night before.  The doctor looked at her for 2 seconds (lifted her tail up) and told me he knew what it was (after his many many years of experience).  He said it was not good at all and she needed to go into surgery.  He told me the price of the X-ray and blood work.  I told him I wasn't comfortable with paying that amount of money with what he just told me by just looking at her butt for two seconds.  He then said "ok if you don't want to pay the price of the X-ray and blood work let's just go straight to surgery".  Then he asks "how much do you want to pay?".  I was floored.  It's not about the price I want to pay.  It's about me wanting to make sure my dog is getting to correct diagnosis and in the best hands.  I am not putting my dog straight into surgery when you don't even 100% know what it is.  As I was walking out he says to me "you come back to me when you realize that we are the cheapest place out there".  I do not recommend going here for your pet.  The vet does not care and all he cares about is how much money he can get.  Sure enough I went somewhere else and found a vet that actually cared about my dog and in much better hands. Took my dog here recently because it was an emergency and this was the closest vet. I made an appointment last minute and went there on my lunch break from work. Despite having an appointment I had to wait for around 20 ish minutes. I was told to wait in the exam room. The examination table was covered in a disgusting old towel that had stains and other animal hair all over it and there was blood on the floor. When the vet finally came in, he took a horrible, used pair of gloves from his pocket. The gloves were clearly old and were stained yellow on the fingers. During the examination, he used a rectal thermometer on my dog. Once done with the thermometer, he gave it the most pathetic wipe with a dry tissue and put it back in the drawer, to be used on the next animal. The whole experience was pretty gross and disappointing. I would absolutely not recommend this place. The initial consultation is cheap but that's only because they charge out the ass for everything else. Do not bring your pet here!! Read Less

First visit to this vet. In all honestly it is a perfectly acceptable location. I live close by and I will return. The other vet we called Granville island hospital had a 1 week wait before Ana could come on and we were worried she had aspiration pneumonia so we couldn't wait that long.  They tell you upfront what costs will be and we are shown her X-rays and consulted. The wait can be a bit long. There's not a lot of patients but just the time isn't quick. So don't come in a rush. Dr harry does his job and doesn't have a bad bedside matter as people mentioned. However I have been to some vets where they are super empathetic etc and if you need or expect that then you will notice he can be more transactional with his questions.  Regardless. I'll be back. After calling 4 other vets to get my cat in, after a fall of the balcony.  I was able to get an appt with short notice.  They were friendly and attentive from the beginning.  They had a pet in before me that took longer than expected.  They continued to check in with me to ensure I was informed they would be right with me.  They took great care of Mimosa, doing exactly what they needed to and gave options in the procedures needed and didn't feel the need to pressure me into anything that I was not comfortable doing for her.  I have to go back several times to have her splint changed out.  I am confident that she is under great care with Dr. Harry. Brother took my dog here for multiple hotspots he had developed on his tail. Part of his tail was shaved, medicated and he was sent off. When I saw him later that evening, I noticed there was heavy scabbing lower on the base of his tail as well. Upon further inspection, it was clear the doctor had completely missed one of the hotspots (which I understand could happen as dogs are not always so cooperative at the vet). What did upset me, however, was that when I phoned the vet to let him know he had missed a spot and asked if he could shave that overlooked area as well, he was going to charge me a visitation fee and a clipping fee- again. We have been going to Dr Harry for the last three years. He helped us with our two senior dogs with grace, compassion and practicality. He approached caring for the senior dogs with a transparent information process and gave us helpful guidance in decision making. When it was time to say goodbye to our Lab, Cisco, Dr Harry was kind enough to accommodate an in home euthanasia so that we could all have a more meaningful and relaxed experience. Now we have two young pups that visit the Hemlock Animal hospital and always get the best care from Dr Harry and his team. They have great long hours that make it easy to schedule an appointment and they always are friendly, helpful and keep us informed. I'm a nervous dog owner and when my chihuahua went in for teeth cleaning I was a wreck. The vet assistant called me to update me on the status of my dog almost ever hour that day, which helped calm me. He came out with sparkling teeth! The prices seem to be fair as well. Watch out for this hospital! They will gouge you every chance they can! I recently had my dog put down and was charged close to $500 for the procedure and private cremation for 5lb dog! The Vet was late returning back to the clinic and the cost was never reviewed with me prior. I was so distraught with grief afterwards I didn't think to question it and just paid it with no questions. A couple days later i started to question such a high cost. I called around to 5 different hospitals in my area and the highest cost was around $300 and that was if the pet wasn't a current client and needing a consultation. My dog's passing wasn't as peaceful as i had anticipated. Once the sedation medication was given, she twitched and looked like she was gasping for air. The euthanasia med was given but then he said he needed to give more as she didn't pass quickly. So he brought in the bottle of med that was labelled euthanasia on it and drew more up. Very unprofessional! Firstly he couldn't calculate the correct amount dosage! She was a 5lb dog. The receptionist told me i could bring my case of dog food for refund. Then when I returned with the food, the vet told me no because it was special order food and my dog was only one that ate it. which i know for a fact is untrue. If pet owners are looking for a peaceful death at a reasonable cost, don't come here! I wished I had taken my dog else where. She deserved better. Read Less

All of the staff here are extremely caring and have always taken very good care of my animals. They always call to check up on my cats after they have had their annual vaccinations, or any type of medical procedure done. Jen is very friendly and I always enjoy hearing stories about her animals while I am paying my bill, or waiting to pick up my cats. I am guilty of calling to check up on one of my cats when she had dental work done, and Jen put my mind at ease by letting me know that everything had gone well and Luna was back to her normally loving self again. I have been coming to this vet since at least 2014 if not longer and I can't imagine going anywhere else now. Every experience I have had with Hemlock Animal Hospital has been a positive one. The day that my cat broke it's leg was the worst of my life. I phoned Dr. Harry as soon as it happened and he told me to come in right away. I showed up and they had pain medication ready as soon as I walked in and x-rays were done straight away. Monty had to stay at the hospital for several days until he was okay to have his leg surgically repaired. After 1 week, he was able to come home. 6 months later he has made a remarkable recovery. Dr. Harry and his team at Hemlock Animal Hospital are simply amazing. They took phenomenal care of Monty and took great care of me. They accommodated all of my questions, phone calls, and visits and I have always felt taken care of by them. I cannot recommend this place enough. I adopted my cat Saldo from hemlock animal hospital over three years ago and since then he has gotten himself in trouble many times.   Hemlock has always exceeded my expectations.  Surgeries have been arranged and carried out in excellent time periods with fantastic results.  Support staff are always helpful and pleasant with great follow up if questions cannot be answered off hand.   For Saldo trust is not easily given and it is obvious he trusts Dr Harry.  The drive to and from Hemlock is the only stressful part of our visit. We have been bringing our 2 bengal cats to hemlock for the past 4 years now. Even though it's a bit of a drive from where we live, we will continue to bring our cats here. Dr. Harry is one of the most compassionate vets I have encountered. He genuinely cares about the animals and doesn't try to push any additional costs/procedures on you unless he feels it's absolutely necessary. My cats hate going to the vet and I know it must be very stressful for them, but I am comforted to know that they will be very well taken care of when they arrive at hemlock. Read Less

This was the only place that would take my dog in at such short notice. I was very concerned because his stomach was hard and bloated and he clearly wasn't feeling well. The girl at the counter was great but Dr. Harry handled my dog like an object. The whole time I felt like it was just about making money rather than making my dog better. Dr. Harry wanted to do an xray despite the fact that we had just had two done 3 days prior from another vet and had them send it to him, which he said looked fine. He then recommended we give my dog an injection "to make him feel better" and "relieve pressure on his stomach". This injection turned out to be for vomiting, which I clearly stated my dog was not doing. Obviously I didn't see any changes in my dog's well-being because he wasn't vomiting anyway. I found out I was mislead by Dr. Harry when I brought my dog to an emergency clinic and I brought the invoice from Hemlock. The doctor at this new clinic suggested giving my dog a pain killer injection and I asked them if it was the same one that Hemlock gave him. She told me that one was actually for vomiting, not pain and I was furious. The injection that this doctor gave him made my dog actually feel better.My dog is still unwell but I got way more answers from the other clinic than Hemlock. All they want to do is take your money. I only ever took my first dog starting as a puppy to Hemlock to see Dr. Harry. I was always pleased with their care and flexibility with appointment times. They also always followed up to check on my dog and sent email reminders for vaccinations which are helpful. After over four years of going to Hemlock, I was sad to move away to Edmonton. In the four months since leaving Hemlock I've had to take my dog to three different vets in Edmonton and now I realize just how good I had it at Hemlock! None of the clinics here had the flexibility in appointment times and force me to take time off work in order to get an appointment, plus none of them care as much! I had hemlock transfer all my pets records to the first clinic I went to thinking that they would be my new vet. Since that initial appointment my dog has had two emergencies (porcupine quills and potentially broken foot) and both times i called and they basically said they were too busy to see my dog even though we were their patient and told me to call elsewhere with no other advice or concern about my dog's health. In contrast, one night about 9 pm my dog had an allergic reaction and I called Hemlock to see if they were still open. They had the phone call forwarded to their home. Both Dr. Harry and Dr. Gurmeet drove in from home and brought their kids in order to treat my dog and only charged me the regular $25 exam fee! If that doesn't show care for their patients I don't know what does. If you want a vet that will be dependable for your pet when they need them, go to Hemlock! Read Less

I have never had a worse experience with a veterinarian in my life. I must question Dr. Harry Makkar's qualifications. He most certainly is not a personable person, but let me get to the real issues. My cat as all animals are extremely attuned to good and bad people. The reaction she had to him was shocking. Never has she been anything but loving and sweet with people, even strangers. She hissed and growled and swatted with him. It did not help that he was rough with her and the weird thing is that he acted offended and disgusted with not only me but my Cat as well. He must have recoiled and flinched a good 20 times in the 10 minutes we spent with him. Really strange behaviour for a veterinarian. Sure, his initial rates are reasonable but he will then try to push unnecessary tests and treatments on you to inflate the bill. He apparently gave my Cat subcutaneous fluids for dehydration. One minute later he brings her back out and says she's done. There was not water hump anywhere on her! It generally takes a minimum of 10 minutes to administer that to start with. For nothing I had to pay $38.00. I took her to the Spca Vet hospital a few days later for a second or real opinion and she did not behave like she did with Dr. Harry. She was sweet and purring as always. They did not gouge me and told me all the tests that Dr. Harry recommended were unnecessary! If you have options, and you do, take your beloved companion anywhere but this alleged Veterinary clinic. My review is a couple years old... but I had a bad experience at this vet when I was still a naive, new dog owner.I took my 3 month old puppy to see Dr. Harry as he was vomiting and diarrhea. Dr. Harry did an adequate exam, but was quite rough with such a young pup. He did a digital rectal exam which seemed extremely awkward and uncomfortable.What really struck me as odd though, was that he questioned why my 3 month old puppy wasn't neutered yet. He suggested we book his neuter at this time as well....The latest studies show that neutering/spaying a dog before their growth plates close (generally at 1-2 years of age) has negative health consequences. For a vet to suggest neutering a puppy at 3 months old.... I have to question his motives and dedication to veterinary medicine. Read Less

My experience with Dr Henry was similar to other people's reviews. I agree he is rather rough and not very compassionate. He didn't make much of an effort to get to know my new puppy or win his trust. He was late for an appointment once and seems to get frustrated when I choose to postpone certain vaccines and medications for later dates. Though he seems knowledgeable. I would agree that this place is cheaper but they will coerce you into doing unnecessary procedures/vaccines/tests instead of letting you weigh out the options and making an educated decision. The male doctor was very rough with my puppy, made me feel stupid for voicing my concerns and didn't even give me an opportunity to ask any of the several questions I had. He also tried to push expensive procedures on me that she did not need. He has zero bedside manner, slams doors and yells in the back room. Super unprofessional. Read Less

I take both my kitten, and my dog there after having adopted my kitten from the clinic. From regular to urgent appointments( my dog broke a tooth) they have been very accommodating( we were able to get an appointment within the hour!). Dr Harry takes the time to explain to you what is happening with your fur babies and him and his staff genuinely care. I had many questions and concerns with vaccinations, and he took the time to talk to me about them, and offers titer testing as well.They also are really helpful in showing you the costs of everything beforehand. We adopted our kitten from here and ever since it's been a complete cash grab. The $240 adoption fee says it includes the Spay procedure. I just picked up my cat and was charged an additional $100 in extras. They were not made clear to my husband that they were Optional - and they led us to believe that they were necessary. $13 for a collar, $30 for another pain med right after surgery and so on. This Doctor takes advantage of people who love their animals and is simply gouging people. My other vet charged us $4 for the collar and had complete disclosure of what was optional and what was required. When I called Hemlock the girl on the phone just kept saying sorry - "I would be angry too" and "I get that you're angry". When I asked her why no one informed me that my cat wasn't supposed to eat for 12 hours before the surgery, she said "It's on the piece of paper we gave you when you adopted her 6 months ago". Really??? I'll be submitting a complaint to the BBB and posting reviews everywhere. They had an opportunity to refund my money as they completely agreed that they didn't disclose what was required to me. And yet they're doing absolutely nothing.Read Less
