I visit Dr. Janice Crook at Mosquito Creek for my senior Havanese's every 6 weeks' acupuncture and laser therapy. Her skills and bedside manners towards my dog is exemplary. Her knowledge on holistically treating my dog is profound and is never rushed. Dr.Crook helps relieve the creakiness in my dog's joints and bones. Helps him get better sleep in his old age. Truly great care, and her staff is excellent too in knowledge, vet care and scheduling admin. Thank you! Read Less

I went here when my dog was 5 years old and had struggled with allergies her whole life. I did like our Vet quite a lot, but  they were injecting her with steroids every 4 - 6 months or so, when it was really bad. It calmed her allergies for awhile, but I wanted to know what alternative therapies (herbs and such) could help in an ongoing manner. After my experience, I have talked with other dog owners and learned that the people I know who go here LOVE it to the moon and back. The people I know who have gone here but no longer go have had similar experiences as mine. First this place charges a fortune. More per visit (I think it was $90 - I couldn't believe it at the time) than the average vet as well as everything else gets a lift in pricing over what you would pay elsewhere. There is a reason her name is Dr.Crook. They also don't cover initial visits when people adopt dogs from the SPCA. Almost every Vet clinic in the lower mainland does this as a courtesy when people adopt dogs, but they do not honour this sort of "Professional courtesy". So my story is that I started seeing a Vet for my dogs ongoing allergies. When she started loosing fur I wanted to take her in as soon as possible, but our regular Vet wasn't available so I went to see another Vet. This vet She said the hair loss was related to her allergies and contradicted the medication the other vet had her on and recommended another drug instead. I google'd her recommend on my phone and it's a chemo medication. I left not buying her recommended medication and paying for the visit - 70 or 90 dollars, I forget how much visits cost. So I took her to the original vet when she was available, who stood by her medication choice and upped the milk thistle dose (?!!) meanwhile my dog was losing hair. I took her back to our original Vet, apologized profusely for my indiscretion, I had just wanted to see if there was another option instead of the steroid injections. He derailed the medication the vet had her on - was not impressed with the chemo drug the other vet had suggested. He determined the hair loss was due to a thyroid issue and we've put her on a very low dose steroid pill once/week which has done wonders for her allergies, I wish we did this sooner. PLUS my vet costs around $60 (I forget exactly) per visit and $45 for repeat visits. The discount on repeat visits really adds up when you're dealing with an ongoing issue. Read Less

Dr Crook has been treating our dog Kuma for several years, since we had the good fortune of finding her after a terrible experience with our previous vet. Dr Crook and her staff are always professional, courteous and accommodating. Yesterday, it was time to say goodbye to our buddy, and Dr Crook managed both us and our dog with the utmost of compassion and concern. At all times she had Kumas well being in mind. Kuma is forever chasing squirrels in the big park in the sky. She (and the staff) made this transition as easy as possible for everyone. A big THANK YOU from us to you. WORST Vet experience ever!!!  I own a 9 year old Boxer and have had my share of trips to the vet.  Mosquito Creek is unassuming at first until you start asking questions.  My first visit was 3 weeks ago, prompted by new surface lumps on my dog and to pick up new thyroid tabs.  That visit for an exam, small asparate of 2 locations and testing plus the tabs was well over $200.  I found out after the tabs were $7.00 more than where I have bought them before.  That was the least of my worries.   Within a week of leaving our first consult/exam with Dr Sue Hughson, a golf ball size lump appeared in the subdermal area of my dogs neck.  Unfortunately, I was now out of town with my dog, so had to rush him to the local vet for them to examine and run more tests. (Which I had just done all this the week prior at Mosquito Creek) Lumps that size don't show up overnight?!!  So why was this missed?  I have the emergency vet fax the paperwork back to Mosquito Creek only for Sue to tell me I need to come in and discuss the issue.  I explained I did not want to be charged for that visit as you have the paperwork and results in front of you.  I had asked if she could prepare a full estimate of removal of 3 lumps (mast cell) including blood work and testing.  She said no problem.  She thanked me on the phone for asking good questions about my dogs condition and being open to knowing what options are available.  When the reception called a few days later with the Estimate, I was shocked!!!  They wanted between $1358.00 and $3000.00.  I said you've got to be kidding?!  Why is there a $1700 gap?  And why is a 3 lump removal so expensive?!  I explained this is not a new procedure for my dog, as Boxer's are prone to cancer, and he has had 2 previous surgery's and that your pricing is astronomical...can you please provide me a breakdown??  The reception went on to explain how every surgeons time is charged differently....great, what person in this world especially a Vet makes over $1000/hr???  Big deal, I questioned the Estimate and the procedure, like a responsible pet owner should!  So the next day Sue calls me and tells me they won't do the surgery, because I don't trust them.  She said how can you take your dog to another vet and pay for an exam but not come back here and pay for the same service, I said, ummmmmm, I was out of town, and they faxed you the results??!!!  And then she went onto explain this whole concept of trust, darn rights, I don't trust you, you just tried to clean out my wallet!!!!!  BE AWARE, Mosquito Creek are not who they seem, nice people maybe, friendly place maybe, but that's how they will get ya! Dr. Crook (Janice) has been our vet for many years and several dogs and cats, and we've always felt that we're in the best hands with her considerate and knowledgeable care and a thoughtful balance between conventional and alternative treatments.  I'm always impressed at her ability to diagnose problems when the patient can't tell her what's happening!  She always has helpful suggestions for saving money (like using equivalent human remedies and medications).  Consultations are never rushed and Janice always makes an effort to have the pet feel at ease.  We became clients for life during the terminal illness of one of our dogs, when Janice went above and beyond the call of duty to maximize his comfort (and ours) in his final days.
