I would not and cannot recommend this clinic, the fact that I gave them one star is an over rated valuation of their service and lack of compassion. My daughter took our 15 month old kitten to the clinic  to have her evaluated due to some concerning symtoms. In as much as this was late on a Sunday evening, the clinic was the only option as none of the other vets were open.We were advised that the cat had a serious uterous infection and if not operated on immediately she would not make it through the night. The cost was estimated between $3000 and $5000.unless there were complications it could be more.A comparable operation at a cat clinic would be around $500 to $1000.We were devastated at this cost as my daughter is a parent of 6 children and this close to Christmas it was simply unaffordable. The cat belonged to my 11 year old granddaughter and we wanted to do everything possible to help this poor little animal. We asked if she could remain on antibioctics and put on a drip for hydration until morning so we could take her to another clinic. We were informed that they doubted the cat would survive the night without surgery. They did inform us that if we were to surrender the cat,the humain society would undertake to look after the operation and the cat would survive but my granddaughter would not see her again. We were caught in a rock and a hard place so I was able to negotiate a lesser fee of $2100,as the maximum we could afford and the clinic said they would operate for that sum as the procedure included spading at the same time. The assistant indicated that it was a simple procedure and given the cats young age she was sure that it would have no complications. We agreed to proceed with the operation and the cat would be the first to be attended at around 12 am.Around 4:30 am we received a call from the clinic that there were complications that our kitten actually had a cut intestine that was infected. This required an immediate response that would need an additional 45 min of surgery, cost estimate back to $5000. Not only did we make our stressful decision on the wrong diagnosis we were now required to complete the surgery with the only option was uthanation. the option of having the humain society assistance was off the table. Inaddition no option to undertake a payment plan,it was all or nothing. Rather than proceed to complete the operation we were force to have the kitten uthanised. During this period it was also very apparent that the doctor was becoming angered with our hesitation, What ever happened to a little compassion, the cat was then uthanised after we stated as before that we simply could not afford the cost of $5000 to complete what was now an irrevocable procedure. This clinic and our veterinarian were totally concerned about getting  an absorbitant pay 5 to 6 times the cost at an vet clinic that was not designated an emergency clinic. Now in addition to the $2100 paid we are being charged for disposal. This has been one of the most tramatic expirences of our lives and Neither my daughter, grandaughter or I will ever use this facility again. Read Less

Unfortunately I would not recommend this clinic, but they are the only after hours option so you may have no choice.  It is going to be expensive if you don't have pet insurance - be prepared.  We waited a long time last night and Dr. Browne's bedside manner was not good - both in lack of empathy and explanation of options.  She told me she didn't have time to explain the reason for an x-ray  as she had other patients to see.  I am fairly well educated.  If I had not had some confidence in my ability to understand and analyze information this would have been a much more stressful encounter in an already stressful situation as our kitten had aspirated water and was in respiratory distress.  We knew from other online reviews, past experience with our dog (who had pet insurance), and interactions with owners, that this emergency clinic was prone to provide an expensive care plan without concern to budget.  We did not agree to the care plan proposed ($1500-$2500 with lots of testing) but instead, at 10pm, and after waiting 2.5 hours to speak with the vet, agreed to x-rays (at insistence of Dr. Brown who informed us this would be critical to have before morning and told us in a very disapproving manner we'd need to sign we declined their full care plan), oxygen, iv, antibiotics and an overnight stay.  Phoned at regular intervals between 11pm and 2am to find the results of the x-ray and found they had been taken by 11pm but not read until 2am. Was not really impressed by this as the reason we had agreed to the xray was Dr. Browne had emphatically told us it could make a difference to the care our kitten received - and then she waited three hours to read it! Finally, had the doctor call us at 2:30am with the xray results, and an excuse as to why she had not returned our previous four calls stating that normally the matter is transferred over to the morning vet to contact us.  Weird response when we had informed the staff repeatedly that we really wanted to know the results and were waiting anxiously, could not sleep, and were promised each time we called the vet would call.  Dr. Browne also told us that because we hadn't approved their care plan our kitten might be discharged in the morning by the vet who was on staff before our regular vet could see him (he was at the emergency clinic in the morning for a shift and this is the reason we'd wanted to wait).  He wasn't and we just picked him up at 7pm. My view is that this clinic is in business to make money and it shows.  They provide a much needed service and there are some caring staff, but the focus on an expensive care plan comes at a cost to animal welfare imo.  There is no doubt it is in the best interests of pets to have every type of testing, but there needs to be some adjustment to a reasonable budget without the attitude or pets that could be treated in a less extensive but precautionary manner are instead going to be euthanized when owners are presented with, as the patient care rep stated, "the gold standard care plan" in the thousands (and just to start) for a matter that could be managed in a more cost effective manner first.  My feeling is this is a corporate directive couched as best interests of, and advocating for, animals.  Fine line but definitely no attention to this matter from the vet, only the patient care coordinator seemed aware of this.  I would also guess from the way our final $1270 bill for a one night stay and which still included items we had not authorized but didn't have the energy to contest, is divided, that the vets are being paid based on a percentage of billings in this clinic. Obviously did not get it at that time I consulted my regular vet to be given the price of 3000$ For the EXACT same procedure. It would of been a booked surgery not an emergency one. I would avoid this coperate dump at all costs. They are a complete money grab, charging as much as they can and openly admitting it. I see a big consolation in several of these outfits working together and developing a comer in the market removing choices for options to pet health care. The more you sign up for this compleatly over priced company, the more they are going to continue to push this over priced cooperate agenda and continues to push out companies that charge fair services. They have signs posted all through the facility reminding customers not to use bad language? How pathetic is it when a company has to post signs like that, I’m wondering if I’m the only one feeling like this company should crawl under a rock and allow fair services and prices back into VICTORIA Read Less

They put Ninja in a box with flowers, and game me a paw print 🐾 free of charge! It did take a good amount of time, but I expected it! Only 24 hour place there is in Victoria. I even had questions an hour later so I called them up and they told me answers in detail and kindness. It is expensive but I totally recommend to anyone who has pet problems after hours. Cheers! Would highly recommend the VCA vet hospital in the case of emergencies. My partner and I had some major difficulties with our cat, and needed immediate assistance. We read about this place online, and our regular vet clinic recommended VCA as well. Once we got to the hospital, our pet was given immediate treatment. I found the staff friendly and accommodating. They also offer free coffee/tea/water and other hot drinks for pet owners. As a precaution, I would recommend that one only use this place for an emergency as they are far more pricey than a regular vet. They do work with 2 different insurance companies, which can help you if you don't have immediate access to extra cash, credit cards, or a line of credit. I think VCA is very efficient, caring, and I strongly recommend them. Read Less

My husband and I had to make use of the services of this 24 hour hospital during the September long weekend.  On the Sunday, I called them because my senior female cat was lying in her litter box, virtually non-responsive and neither eating nor drinking.  The receptionist suggested that if we were concerned enough to call we should probably bring her in.  We did so that afternoon and were very pleased with the care we received for the most part.  Though they were busy, we did see a vet tech who took a history and information about our situation.  They recommended that we leave her for the night and they told us what they were planning to do while they had her.  We received a phone call from a vet after they had done an ultrasound to let us know that she had a urinary tract infection and a cyst by her pancreas, which they had drained.  We had a second phone call in the morning.  We went in to see her on the Monday afternoon, and given her condition, we were not sure that we were going to be able to bring her home.  They called again later that day with an update.  We suggested an appetite stimulant for her (wish they had come up with this themselves?) as she was still not eating.  The next morning we received a call telling us that she had eaten the night before and that morning.  We were told we could come and get her later that morning.  She seemed much brighter when we picked her up and brought her home.  They called us again that evening to check on her, and again the next morning.  We were stunned at her improvement over the next few days, with continuing medication for her infections and the appetite stimulant medication.  We had only three concerns:  first, that the treatment/medication etc. was very expensive; that we had to suggest the appetite stimulant, and that when we picked her up, the technician was confused about what food she had been eating.  Otherwise, we were delighted with her improvement and their care.  They were in contact with her regular veterinarian and gave him information about her treatment.  She has been much improved and we have been so happy to have had the ten weeks since her stay there.  We hope for much more time with her.  We would like to thank them for being there at a very difficult time for us. We took our 10 month old havenese/yorkie puppy here on a sat morn. He was really sick with power puking and diarrhea and I was a crying wreck. My husband and I called ahead of time and took him right in. The staff at the front were super calm and nice. The tech that came in to take Winston's vitals was very patient. He's scared of everyone but us, so we all had to help keep him still to get the readings. The doctor on call came in and was also very nice and calm. She talked us thru all the necessary diagnostics and the next steps if those first tests didn't provide answers. We had a clear plan of what needed to be done and I found that quite calming. We also got an invoice ahead of time to show the costs of the minimal necessary testing and the cost if further action was required etc. I left knowing that Winston was in good hands. We were allowed to come back later that day for visiting hours - which I think is an awesome idea. I've never heard of that before at other vets. He was already looking better. We took him home the next day. He had 3 medications and a diagnosis but not a reason for the diagnosis. Could have been a number of reasons and they didn't see the point of spending more money to narrow it down, because he was responding to medications. I appreciated that they weren't doing extra tests just to do them. The only downside I can comment on was the extremely high price for a one night stay. It was shocking but we were of course going to pay it for our fur baby. We have since gotten pet insurance. Read Less

A quick scroll through these reviews really proves how different experiences can be. I was advised to take my cat here by my regular vet after he swallowed a large amount of string, and my experience was very positive. Seamus was seen right away and the doctor on shift (Dr. Van der Lee) was very kind and informative. I found them to be very upfront about the costs involved in the visit and they provided me with a detailed breakdown to approve before going forward with any treatment. Dr. Van der Lee gave me a few options of care, depending on my financial position, one of which included taking him home to wait it out to see if he passes it - so I would not agree that they only wanted to take my money. She really informed me of all the options possible, their pros and cons, and then let me decide. She made herself available to me in any way I needed. Yes, it is more expensive than your regular vet visit, but this is a 24/7 Emergency Vet clinic with specialized care and if you bring your pet here you should expect to pay more, regardless of what it is, because it costs more to run. Period. Also, they let me hang out in the back kennel with Seamus for as long as I wanted, I got to see them in action and there was care and compassion with every animal I saw them with. Read Less

From the moment we pulled up to this hospital, with our beloved dog in a medical crisis, the team at this hospital were top notch. Sadly, we had to say an agonizing and sudden goodbye but we can not thank the staff enough for their professionalism, care and compassion for him and for us during a very, very difficult time. From the help given to us in the parking lot to unload our 80lb boy from the truck onto the stretcher by a tech with her breakfast in hand, arriving to her shift, dropping everything to help us, to being so caring about how to manage him after he was gone, respecting our wishes to bring him back to our farm to rest forever. I have read reviews here about being over charged. I have been there too, where it seems unfair and unreasonable. People need to know that we were only charged an exam fee for many staff working on him and caring for us for well over an hour. At our worst moment, we were most definitely undercharged. All the staff earn a wage and every iv tube, needle, even saline, costs money. If we had to pay our own hospital bills, we would know better how much all the supplies and staff cost. We will be making a donation to the SPCA in the name of the hospital as a gesture of thanks for being so compassionate. Read Less

We arrived at the Vet ER after our dog was bit and the staff at the reception area was fine.  They took Max to the back to get his vitals and then he was brought back to us.  Then we went into the exam room and Dr Oomah came in and was extremely casual. He sort of looked at Max's wound and we were advised that he already looked at it when Max had his vitals taken.  My husband was asking all sorts of questions as he is, also, a physician and Dr Oomah either looked annoyed or didn't really care.  Anyhoo, Max didn't need stitches (phew) but Dr Oomah put him on antibiotics and gave him pain meds. We left with a bill of less than $300 (yay). So we give Max his pain meds and his antibiotics.  About an hour later Max is throwing up.  We thought it might be nerves.  But when it happened the next morning, we called the vet and asked for different antibiotics.  The receptionist said that no other vet can prescribe meds and Dr Oomah is off but they will try to send him an email to get a hold of him.  I find this to be strange as what happens if the vet goes on vacation and there are complications? Does the animal not get treated until the vet comes back? We called our vet and explained what happened, he said that the evidence is anecdotal, at best, that treating a superficial wound rather than a puncture with antibiotics helps decrease infection. Instead he suggested that we keep it dry and clean it with saline/hibitane.  The other thing we noticed when looking at the antibiotics is that the labels says to give 1 tab with food and that it is cephalexin 250mg.  When looking at the pills, it is clearly the 500mg tabs.  Well no wonder Max was throwing up! So I called the vet, there were no apologies other than the administrator will call me back.  which they never did. With my past dogs, I have seen enough emergency rooms to know this is not a vet I would be going back to since they do not seem to have the care and concern or attention to detail that they should have as they made my dog more sick by giving out the wrong antibiotics, can you imagine what else they don't pay attention to? Oh my husband and I noticed what else they missed....the bigger cut on the outside of Max's ear...so what kind of examination did Dr Oomah do?  Not one that helped Max in any way!  Will not go back there ever.
