I first came to this clinic about 5 years ago, new to Victoria and also to having a dog in my life. Raising a large breed dog with joint issues and fatty lumps (and and and... ) gave me the chance to appreciate just how wonderful this clinic is overall. At first I didn’t like having a new vet every time we visited but they are actually all amazing and I like having different views and opinions. Rhea in the rehabilitation centre is a gem both in person and in profession. The underwater treadmill is a key piece of equipment to have and paired with a team that knows and CARES about our dogs rehabilitation is worth its weight in gold! With the support of the rehab ladies and their connection with K-9 orthotics on the east coast my dog can now hike and walk like the good ol’ days, something I will forever be grateful for :) Read Less

Vet1 starSorry to say I did not have a good experience here. When my cat was diagnosed with diabetes I wanted to try the diabetic food route first before insulin, but was so highly pressured to give him insulin immediately. I experienced emotional manipulation and gave into it, rather than give him the chance that just might have worked. He went on the insulin and reacted very poorly and got very ill over the next few weeks. I thought a good vet would give me the facts and options and not put so much pressure on me. Many hundreds of dollars later I have lost my beloved cat. It's hard to swallow that it could be the case that my cat would have gotten better without insulin ( it does happen) and also that I would not be facing huge unnecessary vet bills. Read Less

Hillside Vet has caused a sudden decline in our beloved border collie leading to her death. She was given a medication which was to help with arthritis but the vet didn't bother to look over the bloodwork or consider existing contraindications. Receptionist wasn't much better, when I called in tears she showed less compassion than a robot. Now my best friend is gone and I'm left blaming myself for trusting the vet and not researching the med and asking for copy of the bloodwork and doing a through research of Metacam. I simply cannot believe that the doctor would prescribe something that is contradictory. Shame on you Dr. V! Read Less

I just came back fro there. We thought our dog had a tick. The took a few minutes despite not having an appointment to look at it, see that it was not a tick but a probably benign growth to be checked out at a later date. The staff were helpful and friendly, which is more than I can say for the dog, but they took his growls in stride. Would not hesitate to recommend them Read Less

My 14 year old female cat was having her annual check up. Skylee was taken into the back room for blood work, and a urine sample. Skylee was screaming, hissing, blood curdling screams and growling. Usually indicates fear and threat. They traumatized my cat when there was little wrong with her. By the time I was leaving they talked me into a Diabetes Panel for $282 in which was incomplete. They sent me home with a urine kit to take the urine sample myself. When I arrived home Skylee was acting out of sorts with anxiety, lethargy and making backward sneezing sounds in duress. The sounds were like a yowling noise. A sound that denotes worry and discomfort. I left the vet with a traumatized cat and an invoice for $408 for an incomplete job. I will never return! I pray that anyone who loves their animal will never go to Hillside Veterinary Hospital please.... Read Less

well i brought my chihuahua to the hillside hospital and the vet there went to check my chi's teeth and she didnt snarl or growl rather she yelped as if in pain and then he held her above the table by her throat smiling at me as i screamed in horror as she pooped and peed all over. If you care about your animal i would not take them here not ever again. This whole experience has damaged both Bella and my vet experience. Read Less

Sadly I had to put my 16 year old bichon mix down yesterday. I was scared and so so sad. The entire staff were wonderful. The doctor explained the whole process to me. She went so peacefully. These people are scam artists they over charge for no treatment or service. The vets will try to find things wrong with ur pet instead of trying to fix what u brought them there for. I used them for a long time, final straw was when they wanted to do a biopsy before they removed a skin tag. Like really? We recently moved across Canada to Victoria.  As part of any significant move there is a need to rebuild your health provider contacts and finding a new vet was among them.  In our previous city we had a great vet who had cared for our beloved Bouvier, Koda, from birth to now age 12 (old for a Bouvier). We were not looking forward to the change.We found the Hillside vet based on reputation and made an appointment with one of its owners Dr. Chan.  That's when the magic began.  Dr. Chan discovered, among other things, that our four-legged guy had developed a liver condition that was due to prolonged use of Steroids.  This change away from his medication was significant and difficult but Dr. Chan was there for us every step of his recovery.  She monitored, prescribed and continued to take an active interest in Koda until the problem was resolved.  Even after his condition stabilized she would continue to call to check in on his condition, and where needed, suggest slight adjustments here and there to ensure Koda's continued comfort.  We were blown away by her compassion and interest.  This is a person who was born to be a Vet.  Dr. Chan is that doctor that you hope to meet when health concerns are present.  She clearly is in the business to practice good medicine and be there for her patience and their families. The clinic itself is clean and welcoming and is staffed by very friendly people at the front desk who engage you in conversation, are efficient, professional and love to give out treats.  Koda gives them a huge paws up!  The Vet techs are also wonderful.  Friendly, caring and highly competent.  Clearly this is a clinic that is run by owners who have set the bar high for quality of service and treatment.We highly recommend the Hillside Veterinary Clinic and in particular Dr. Chan Read Less

Best vet office I've ever been to. They were very kind and gentle with both cats I've taken there. I've seen two different vets now at this office and have been very impressed by both of them, my mother has also brought one of her cats here and saw a different woman who she was impressed by as well. They knew what was wrong right away, blood tests confirmed what the one said. The more recent time I brought in a pet of mine she had a tapeworm, which I got a pill for and she's all better now. It was refreshing and reassuring to see vets that I could tell deeply cared about the animals they were treating. They were very informative and answered all other questioned I asked, and warned about other things I didn't know about. They also phoned to follow up and make sure that my cat had gotten better, which she has, and with the vets tips and she's also lost the extra weight (which wasn't too bad yet, but was getting there) and is more active and agile. The prices are more affordable than the other places I've been to and I recommend them to everyone I know. I hope that I never have to go to a different vet for as long as I live in this city! I started going to a different vet clinic when I first moved to Victoria, and it just so happened that they were closed when my kitty had an urgent issue - so I brought her to Hillside. I loved the service, and Dr. Gaines was so caring and knowledgeable that I ended up switching to Hillside as my regular vet then and there. Three years later, I've been nothing but pleased. I had an emergency issue with my other cat recently, and the clinic fit me in the day-of, to accommodate my schedule so I didn't miss school, and made sure my kitty had care all day. The surgeon (I forget her name) was wonderful, and explained everything so well so I felt that I was able to make an informed decision for treatment. I highly, highly recommend Hillside! Read Less

My dog died almost a year ago now, but I feel as though this business should get some kudos for over 12 years of excellent care even down to my dog's last breath.  They always handled everything professionally, never misdiagnosed or over-medicated.  They truly care about the pets that come in their door and they are sensitive to the often quirky nature of pet owners (not that I'm quirky, no way).  I really couldn't have expected more out of a vet, so I just wanted to say thanks and maybe someday they will be the vet for a future dog of mine.
