Sent something earlier, moments ago - likely lost. I am a dunce on computers. - and alas, many other things now, too. Was wondering why there is no historical record or recognition of previous veterinary surgeons who gave a significant part of their lives to establishing veterinary practice in the Glenboro-Baldur sometimes Carberry areas?
Me, I was one of them, for 10 years -1975 to 1985. First veterinarian to occupy the new vet clinic on Highway 5. Moved there, from a New Zealand practice, and Souiris, before that.
Founded and wrote the newsletter Ruminations, from my Glenboro clinic, for all Manitoba veterinarians, for almost 10 years. Is the newsletter still operative? I hope the flag pole out front of the clinic, and the wagon wheel, are still there. What about the ferry west of town on highway 2, over the Assiniboine Rive.? is it still there, functioning, or is it closed, now?
I remember moose and the odd bear crossing the road in front of me, as I drove thru Spruce Woods Park to clients on the other side of the Park - usually saw these in the middle of the night- always very cautious on this road north, in the wee hours.
Later, I eventually moved on to work as a veterinary diagnostic pathologist at the Animal Health Centre, Abbotsford, BC., for 22 years. Wrote a book on vet practice in Glenboro, and in Souris. About Glenboro!
My thoughts go back to some of my friends and/or clients in Glenboro: Herman Arason (livestock-man, former chairman of the Veterinary Board; Don Foster (town office), Bill Smith (pharmacist); Jim Christie; Jim Bund, Charolais cattleman par excellence; Roy Jewsbury; John Funk. SIncerely, John Coates DVM, M.Vet. Sc., Claresholm, Alta.
I hope the Clinic flies the Canada's Red Ensign flag, at least occasionally - especially on November 11th, out of respect for those who, in WW2, gave their lives for our freedom. I always did. It was the very least, I could do. The Aussies and Kiwis still proudly retain their Blue Ensigns; we allowed our very own Red Ensign, to slip away.
