Today I take my dog to what was supposed to be an 10:45 appointment for a check up for the LAST time EVER at that vet as she has been scratching her ears, 11:30 rolls around, the doctor shows up, takes her in but i had to hold her because she was squirming she wasn't happy that he was in her ears, anyway he proceeds to tell me I am not holding her tight enough and was getting very irritated with her or me which ever it doesn't really matter this is his job. So I then held her close to me so he could put drops in but before that takes his hand and pushed her head against my collar bone and he did it hard enough that it moved my feet and says your not stern enough you dont ever put your hands on anyone at any time...he kept walking out of the room like he was mad, get an assistant.She is a small dog So after that he goes on to cut her nails she lets out a yelp but I didn't realize he cut her nail to short until paying their was blood all over my arm... I noticed it and said she's bleeding then the secretary put the powder on to stop the bleeding. $140 later to look in her ears meds and cut her nails? That's not a checkup to me, this visit was hell, I left their in tears, I was embarrassed, he is very rude their was lots more to the visit but this is just to let people know about my experience and it was not a good one. You don't leave upset/crying you should be happy for your baby it was a nightmare! Read Less

IT Was a long time ago back in 2007 but a day i will never forget my cat of 18 years was basically at the end of her life i didnt want to see her just lay around until she died she wasnt eating or drinking just sleeping i called Maine St Vet and they took me in rite away i had my daughter came with me for support they checked her over and suggested she be put to sleep.I was a mess i had this cat since i was 16 . After saying goodbye to my girl my daughter took her into the room with the doctor two of the staff stayed with me and consoled me while i waited a couple of min later the doctor came out and told me they didnt even have to give her the medicine she passed on her own the staff let me stay with her after she passed for as long as i wanted they gave me hugs and even cried with me then when i was ready to leave they said there was no charge . They cremated her and gave me her ashes in a little flowered box which today sits on a stand in my home. These people went above and beyond for me i will never forget that day. Read Less

Dr. Smith gave me very detailed information on how to treat my dog, and was willing to listen to all of my questions and address my concerns with knowledgeable answers. I've been bringing my pets to Main St vet hospital for over 16 years. First my two cats.. one of which was asthmatic and had other chronic issues. Since then, my 2 dogs- one of which has old doggy ptsd with the new baby and new puppy in the house. I am comforted by Dr Smith's true care for my pets and first course of action to not be hard drugs but instead homeopathic and natural remedies. I certainly wouldn't suggest getting a bunny fixed here- they don't do females & I found them pretty dismissive about questions or what I could do to give him comfort, I brought food for him because it was an all day procedure and they gave me the SAME amount of food back so my bunny went through this without eating a thing! I brought a water bowl and it came back bone dry, so he got put under anesthesia with nothing in his stomach which you CAN NOT do with bunnies, HOURS later and my bunny is still messed up on medication, and there is blood on his blanky which I was told shouldn't be there- I called to ask questions after the procedure as well because I'm literally freaking out- and they were very unhelpful. They don't know enough about bunnies to do it, so don't go. Made my mistake.(Experts with dogs and cats and has even helped my guinea pig that's why I thought well my rabbit would be fine here but it's not the case- Everything but Rabbits seems to be more than fine/healthy going here.) Dr. Smith has been my animals vet for over 15 years now. I've always had great experiences here. A few years ago my dog Sheba ended up with heart disease and it was too far gone. We tried medicine and unfortunately the right valve had pretty much collapsed, nothing more we could do. Time came and we had to do the humane thing. Dr. Smith cried right along with me as I said my goodbyes. I will never forget that. I knew at that moment he will be our family vet forever. Thank you for the kindness and your professionalism. We have had Shawn as a vet for nearly twenty years and in that time we have had zero issues. We have always found him to be professional and caring for our dogs, very thorough and willing to take the time to explain what he was doing and answering any questions we have. when we had to have our Doberman put down because of cancer, he and his staff were very compassionate and caring. Recently we had to have him come in to the clinic on a Sunday to look at our Greyhound who had injured his legs. Again, Shawn was so helpful and took excellent care of our boy. I always recommend Shawn, and will continue to do so. As a sidenote, my niece has a German Shorthair Pointer, from Shawn's kennel, and he is a great and beautiful dog. Read Less

Have been taking my cat here for many years and have always received great service. The staff is very helpful and patient. My cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes and I had lots of questions. Regular vet was closed, and our dog has a serious on-going stomach issue. They took us in at 2pm on a Saturday when they were closing without hesitation. The vet was thorough and suggested different remedies and also didn't charge for after-hours. Read Less

I did not have a good experience at this clinic at all. Always late to receive you (between 30 and 60 min), poor service and charge arms and legs... I am not going to explain all my disagreement there but after several appointments with my cat and dogs, lots of $$$ and not satisfy at all... I did not recommend this place. Read Less

We drove in under what we thought was an emergency. Based on the hours left to travel. This nut job did all he could to diswade us even though his girl Friday gave instructions online in case of emergency. Wing nut starts out with 250 off the bat. Then went downhill doing voodoo medicine that we ended that night ND some stupid weird ass drops he was going on and on about. Slapping the vial 10 times etc. It was all I could do to slap this joke in the face. University of vets in Quebec did three surgeries to fix what asshole stuck in a half syringe. We have notified Taxation Canada so no freebies. This guy is a joke. Never stop there. His Bimbo drove home in. He was under some influenced and stunk like fish. Shame on you. Money grabber. I did not have a good experience at this clinic. Dr. Shawn Smith had NO bedside manner with me or my puppy. He never even touched her....had me hold her up to show him where she had gotten at her self and got all her stitches out, had an assistant come in to hold my puppy to give her a needle to put her to sleep....then told me I could "hold her or they would JUST put her in a kennel"---seriously?...what a nice way to say it!! They charged me just under 300.00 to have her spayed and for some meds etc. and charged me 480.00 plus to re stitch her!! For needles, meds, checkup ( the one where he never touched her), etc etc.!! Dr. Smith made me feel terrible. I guess he felt I was neglectful in letting her get her stitches out, but I told them this was our FIRST dog ever and to please let me know what I needed to do. After her surgery, they never offered a cone for her or any other ways to be sure she did not lick herself. Just handed her to me and sent me on my way. About 7 years ago I walked into your business and had my heart stolen by a puppy that had been abandoned there ! He went by the name of lochlan . He had parvo and was quarantined and on a special diet ! Just thought you guys should know he is the best dog in the world and is a very happy soul ! I had a bad experience here a few years ago, I took my 16 year dog in to be euthanized. After a very quick visit from the vet, he gave the first needle to put her to sleep, when he came back to give the second needle, she was not asleep. He gave the second needle anyway, I was not alert enough to protest. The dog them howled for the next thirty seconds as she passed away...it was very traumatic. Basically he did not properly dose the dog for the sleep portion and she suffered for the last moments of her life. Do not go here... Read Less

Excellent Vet I have an aggressive dog. Dr Smith handles her so well. I am very pleased with the service I recieve. I always get a reminder call and a follow up call after her visit. His staff are very friendly know all my pets and always follow-up to ensure they are doing well. I brought my cat here several years ago, and would never do it again. It wasn't his usual vet, but it was clear there was something seriously wrong with him so I brought him to the closest vet who could fit him in. I was particularly interested in the Main Street Veterinary Hospital because they advertised that they practice alternative or holistic medicine as well. I brought a sample of the cat's vomit with me, because it seemed weirdly pink and I was worried it might have blood in it (I was freaked out). The vet gave the cat a cursory and rough look over, threw the vomit sample in the garbage with a sneer, and then told us the cat was sick because he was stressed out by our home environment. He prescribed expensive food and what he described as "kitty prozac" (also very expensive). We thought the diagnosis was ridiculous, so we brought the cat to his regular vet the next day. It turns out he had an intestinal blockage and needed emergency surgery. The other vet called Main Street Veterinary Hospital and chewed the vet out until he agreed to give us our money back. More importantly, if we hadn't sought a second opinion our cat would have died. Highly NOT recommended. Read Less
