Chester Basin Animal Hospital

Chester Basin, Nova Scotia
General Info
Dental Service
Like humans, our pets need their teeth cleaned on a regular basis. But unlike humans, most pets don’t get their teeth cleaned every day. Even when no signs of tartar are visible, there is still a line of plaque and bacteria on and under the gums. This bacteria, if not properly maintained, will eventually affect your pet's organs causing them to become less functional. 80% of pets over the age of 1 year show some sign of periodontal disease. This is why an annual cleaning is so important for the overall health of your pet. Also a regime of brushing your pet’s teeth with a combination of a special dental diet can help to improve your pet’s dental health. Our on-site dental facility includes: cleaning, polishing, extractions, and dental x-rays.
Euthanasia
We understand that this is a very personal and emotional time for you and your pet. We try to think of euthanasia as the final act of love you can give your pet to end their suffering. After your pet is gone, we will discuss options with you which include taking your pet home for burial or leaving your pet with us to make arrangements for burial or cremation.
Laboratory Services
Our in-house diagnostics offer blood, urine and fecal testing. Once your pet's blood has been collected, results can be obtained within 20 minutes. We also offer several tests which are referred out, including titre testing, which is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies in your dogs system against Parvo and Distemper viruses. Titres can be an alternative to vaccinating.
Laser Therapy
K-laser is a therapy that penetrates deep in to the tissue promoting rapid healing. It increases circulation providing oxygen and nutrients to damaged areas, which reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain. Laser therapy is another alternative to pain management for you and your pets.
Pet Supplies
Quality veterinary diets, prescription diets, home cooked recipes and nutritional supplements are offered at the hospital as well as nutritional consultations. Our retail area offers a variety of shampoos, flea products, toys, leashes and other pet goodies.
Surgery
We offer a wide range of reproductive, soft tissue, dental and minor orthopedic surgeries using anesthesia tailored to meet your individual pet’s needs. Our surgical facility meets the standards set by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. We also refer specialty surgeries to board certified surgeons in Halifax, Moncton and the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI.

Radiology
With our state of the art digital radiology unit, we can obtain x-ray images in minutes allowing for rapid assessment and diagnosis which is especially important in emergent situations.
