When I first started coming here I had no experiences with vet. This was my first cat who I adopted from a woman trying to re-home him.My first experience with Dr Brewster was when I brought my boy in due to vomiting and diarrhea. They ran $400 in tests but still couldn't give me an answer as to what was wrong. They pumped him full of meds and basically hoped for the best. That time he did recover and was fine for just over a year. Then this year I brought him in late October due to signs of an UTI. Should be a nice simple fix. ... unfortunately they have him two rounds of antibiotics that I later found out aren't even used to treat UTIs (confirmed by two other vets I spoke with). When I came back after round #1 of the antibiotics they claimed his urinalysis showed no signs of an infection. But I kept telling them that he was peeing blood and he was peeing outside the box. ...after a couple more urinalysis' they finally agreed that yes, there appears to be an infection. Great. Let's treat again. So they gave him the exact same antibiotics that they gave him last time.. and surprise surprise, that didn't work. They also pumped him full of a bunch or other meds (painkillers, antidiarrhea meds, other antibiotics).  During this whole thing my cat developed diarrhea and straining after a bowel movement. He would strain for up to an hour afterwards and would pee and poop himself ..and blood was mixed In. They then believed it was cystitis and colitis or maybe just diabetes related (that was their favourite go to reason). We did B12 shots and pro biotics to try to help. They were now thinking possibly IBD. On one of the MANY visits over those 8 weeks, the vet mentioned a heart murmur that she said wasn't there before. ..but didn't look anymore in to it. .. I even brought it up to another one of the vets, she also said it's probably not a big deal and that we would handle the diarrhea and UTI first. I was ready to put my boy down two weeks before Christmas because he was getting worse. After the second round of the wrong antibiotic I asked for a different kind because obviously that on wasn't working. ..they tried to sell me a $70 ..I kindly asked them for something a bit cheaper as I've spent hundreds of dollars already. They gave him amoxicillin and With in 12 hours he was like a brand new cat. Back to his old self. AMOXICILLIN is what they should have gave him in the first place. ..they almost let me put him down over it... Or almost let him die by giving him the wrong meds over and over again. Fast forward almost two week to last night: he started breathing heavy so I rushed him to a different vet this morning (because I had zero trust in companion by this point) ....turns out his heart murmur (that was 'probably no big deal') was congestive heart failure. I had to put my cat down this morning because of a murmur that developed out of the blue that didn't seem to concern them. Read Less

This was my vet clinic for the last 14 years, and I could not give any higher praise to the staff that work here. Always clear and professional, and never have I had a bad experience with any of the staff here (current or past). I had a very sick kitty when he came into my life in 2003, less than a year old, we dealt with several operations and near heartbreak, but Companion saved him, and nicknamed him "the miracle kitty". Over the course of the years, because of his condition when he was a kitten, my kitty was chronically ill, and any time we had problems, or questions, the staff at Companion were there to help. Fast forward to this year, my little guy lived a very happy and fun filled life. The staff at Companion were there for us and gave him every single one of his 9 lives and made them worth it. When "the time" came last week, they were very thorough with his last appointment, and made sure we knew what was going on and as I had known deep down, it was that time, and it had come. Dr. Osbourne was very kind and compassionate as well as the rest of the staff who helped us that day. I cannot thank Companion enough for what they did for my little guy over the years, and I'm sure if my miracle kitty could have spoken, he would've thanked them, too. Read Less

I was a client of Don Slaunwhite for 11 years. Since I got my first puppy in Nov of 2003. I knew him from our children playing hockey together. All this time I was a loyal client. I only seen Dr Bishop about vaccines because I disagreed on yearly shots and for nutritional councelling as I would not feed the dry food the clinic sells. It is not quality food. On the 11th of 2015 I took Linus in because his leg had swelled and he was limping. He had a lump in his leg area but he was covered in lumps and cysts that had been tested and found benign. Don did a biopsy and sent us home to wait. Through the night the needle site slowly split and Linus started to bleed...slowly at first. I bandaged it but it split more. By morning it started to bleed a lot and I rushed Linus back to Don. He told me Linus's biopsy was negative so he would remove the tumour and call me when done. I also asked him to remove another surface lump and left. When I picked Linus up Don told me he had bad news. He said when he got Linus opened up he discovered Linus had extensive aggressive cancer that had spread into his groin and he could not remove it. That even an amputation would not work as it was spread so far. He did not remove any of the mass at all. Just stitched his fragile skin and gave him back to me. In less than 12 hours most of the stitches had pulled away leaving a hole and the inside of Linus's leg visible. He was on pain meds and antibiotics and I was told to come for daily bandage changes ($15-25/day). I asked for someone to show me how as I could not afford to keep that up but they never did. I went to the pharmacy and bought supplies and began to do the bandages myself for a couple days then to the vet on the third. About a week into this Dr Decarful told me she thought that it was not humane to keep Linus alive. That dogs were good at hiding pain. Meanwhile Linus was wagging his tail and eating and happy...except for the hole in his leg. I refused to euthanize him and said I wanted other treatment options. She finally told me about table sugar dressings. Just plain sugar in the wound. It took me about 12 weeks but the sugar dressings worked and the hole healed. This was one of the worse experiences of my life and I was still waiting for Linus to die. A couple of months later The tumour swelled up a lot. He was not in pain but it made him tire if he tried to walk or play. Don said he could do nothing. I went to another vet for a second opinion in May but Don would not send the entire file so nothing was recommended. Finally in September I thought to go to Dr Bishop again. When she seen Linus she said she was pretty sure she could remove the mass and if not at least debulk it and improve his quality of life. She did this the next day and also removed the other lump I mentioned. When the pathology report came back I was stunned to hear there was no cancer. It was a fatty tumour. Totally curable. Now removed. I waited until Linus and I were totally healed (I was in a car accident in Nov/15) and on Jan 6th I took Linus's file and pathology report to Don. I asked him to please explain why I had been put through this when it was not even cancer. He was pretty reluctant to discuss this. However when I asked for a refund of the money I paid him he said " there is no way to even be certain this is the same tumour". I was stunned. I asked how it could not be the same tumour and he said "I debulked some of the original". This is a complete fabrication and I told him so. At this point he took a copy of my papers and said he would get back to me. He has not contacted me by mail, phone nor email. I am angry that Linus and I were subjected to this and then treated to lies after the fact. If you love your pet I hope you take our experience into consideration. Karen Antle. Read Less

I have been taking the animals to Companion since 2012. I was looking for a clinic that sees rats and it was recommended.Dr. Slauenwhite isn't a board certified exotics specialist but he has been working with them for a long time. I really respected his opinion. He never talked down to me or forced anything on me. I have had 4 surgeries for the rats and all have gone well.Since then, he has become the vet I request for our cat and our new dog. He always compliments me and the cat when he sees us and he always answers questions open and honestly. I always leave the clinic feeling good.I've seen two other vets (one was great with exotics but the other I didn't find as personable) but Dr. S is my favorite. Read Less

My family started using Companion Animal when they first opened. Back then it was a small practice with just one vet, eventually expanding to two. The service was great, the two vets (Dr. Slaunwhite and Dr. Keizer) were amazing. Then Dr. Keizer decided to move and and they replaced her with two new vets.At this point I was out on my own and had my own two cats and decided to try one of their new vets because Dr. Slaunwhite was booked solid. The other vet had no bedside manner what so ever. She didn't smile, she didn't act concerned, she just.. didn't care about my sick cat. I was appalled by the way she roughly handed my sick cat that when she left to get something, I gathered up my cat and simply left.I recently welcome a dog into my family and had to call around for quotes for his needles and neutering. I thought I would give them another chance. The person on the phone seemed too busy to want to help answer my questions and rushed me off the phone. They were also the most expensive out of the 7 or 8 places I called. They did move down the mall and their offices do look great, but the new staff need to take a moment and show some empathy and bedside manner. My mother does still go there, but she does book her appointments months in advance just to see Dr. Slaunwhite. Read Less

The vet is never cheap and it can be hard to deal with all the bills that accompany a sick pet, however Companion really a good spot to come where I felt I got an honest opinion and assessment. I so didn't want my first impression at the vet's office with my new dog to be me coming in with a tear-streaked face and him all bloody and bruised, but I guess that's what you get when you have a dog with separation anxiety and a penchant for chewing his way out of metal cages. I should have re-named him Houdini.Even though the first impression I gave them was not ideal, they did not judge, and were actually pretty understanding about it.  The vet was very gentle when handling Murphy, and when he got nervous around muzzles, she didn't try to push it on him so she could check out certain things like she wanted.  She said she would much rather back off and gave me instructions on how to check him out myself when he's more relaxed at home instead of traumatizing him further for the sake of a quick look. I appreciated that a lot.  She also gave me great tips, information, and a contact for a trainer so I could help Murphy cope with his separation anxiety. That said, I felt like some of the staff, and the vet, were a little cool in their interactions with me.  They were helpful and competent, but not overly warm and welcoming when I dealt with them to get the prescriptions filled or pay the bill.  They weren't unpleasant, just a little too brisk for my tastes. Overall, though, it's a nice little office, conveniently located, and professional. Plus, if you're just popping in for some dog food, they have a little table set up at the side so you can by-pass the reception and be on your way in no time. Read Less

My first experience here with Pippa, outside of getting her first round of shots, was when she had swallowed something OR had a reaction to her medicine and she had a bad reaction. Not only did they fit me in immediately but the vet (Dr MacDonald is awesome) called me personally the next day to check up on my darling Pippa to see if she was ok. We have taken her faithfully ever since and the staff are caring and also offer advice on training methods, food, and supplements, and the shop has toys as well as leashes and collars, talk about a one stop shop!I never feel pressured by the staff or my vet to do anything drastic or expensive, but I am told options and websites to check out to inform myself before making any decisions for my dog re: spaying or nutrition. He was also fixed here and they were very informative on how to care for him while healing. These guys are always my first place to go if I need to visit the vet or have questions.

Slaunwhite. Read Less

The folks at Companion are really friendly and genuinely care about the health and well being of your pet.  We had to bring our cat here a couple of times when we weren't sure what was wrong with her.  They were helpful on the phone, offering advice and when we decided to bring her in, we didn't have to wait to long and were happy with the service we received. Read Less

I love this place, and surprisingly enough so does my dog. Also the location is great because it so close to home! Read Less

Going to a vet is usually not a pleasant thing for pets (or at least for my kitties) since you have the stress of the trip there and it being a different environment.  My first cat Simone had his first checkup and shots here and the vet was very friendly and made him feel at ease. He was also fixed here and they were very informative on how to care for him while healing. These guys are always my first place to go if I need to visit the vet or have questions. They always have their shelves stocked with the Medi-cal brand of pet food if you have picky eaters. All pet owners know that pet care for our little ones is expensive but I find these guys to be very affordable and the staff are always pleasant to chat with.
