Halifax, Nova Scotia
General Info
In 1939, the Halifax Veterinary Hospital opened its doors and became the first established Animal Hospital Practice in the Halifax area. Dr. Ross Ainslie acquired the hospital in 1953, and has since been committed to offering excellence in animal health care, promoting responsible pet ownership and health-related educational opportunities for our clients. The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is one of three (see also the Fairview Animal Hospital and the Spryfield Animal Hospital) that are owned by the Halifax Veterinary Hospital Inc. Conveniently located within the city of Halifax, our health care team offers collectively over 95 years of experience with extensive and ongoing training in all aspects of Veterinary medicine.
The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Admitedly I have zero experience with other vets as I am a first time pet owner. However! I took in one of my rats after she started bleeding from an ear after I'd only had her for a few weeks. New pet mom over here was worried sick. Dr. Dibblee and her staff simply loved her (she is a very friendly and active little rat). The tech soothed my rattie when she got nervous at being held down so Dr.Dibblee could examine her ear. Dr. Dibblee reassured me that it was only an ear infection and prescribed some meds, and even advised me on how to administer them. A few days after my appointment, someone from the clinic even called me to check on how my rat was doing, which I thought was so nice.Last week I took that same rat back for the same issue (it's a recurring thing) and the Dr even prescribed pain meds after I expressed concern my rattie was in pain. She also had lice, so I had to take in my other three rats because they all have to be weighed and prescribed Revolution. I was not charged for the exam for the other three (only the meds) because the techs did the work, which I really appreciated as the expenses were starting to pile up. They took them out back without me to weigh them, and came back saying that all four ratties were healthy, friendly and social. They're usually shy and skittish, which can only mean the staff was extra careful. I was so grateful! I spoke with the tech a few minutes; she told me how she'd only recently started doing exotics and had never handled rats before, and that she loved getting that experience, and a positive one at that. I would recommend this clinic to anyone. Read Less

I've been taking my kitties to Halifax Veterinary Hospital for about a year and a half now, and in that time, we've received only incredible care and service. The waiting area and appointment rooms are kept very clean, and Mr. Moo is a great greeter. The desk staff, vet techs and Dr. Croft in particular are all incredibly patient, friendly, and knowledgeable--I've had to bring both of my cats there for day-long stays and I'm completely comfortable leaving them with the team. They're all great animal lovers, and make what could be a very stressful task (what cat *enjoys* going to the vet?) into a manageable one. Their prices are fair and they don't pressure you into doing or buying anything unnecessary. They put the animal first. Read Less

Well! I just took my Ball Python to the vet this morning for a check up, and I'll say, this place is perfect. VERY friendly staff, they loved my snake to death, all took pictures of him and took turns holding him. The doctor was wonderful, Dr Suzette Dibblee. She gave him a good exam, handled him with care and kindness, checked him over from top to bottom. He's in a great bill of health. Appointments and registering was so simple, I called over the phone, they took all mine and Jormungandr's (snake) information to register him into the system, and booked me an appointment for two days later. The price was good, for an overall exam/diagnoses was $85, which is REALLY good for an exotic pet. I know most people are going to be taking out other pets, like cats and dogs, and while I was out there, the staff was loving up everyone's pets, giving them treats, taking really good care of them, and the customers seemed REALLY happy with the staff and visit as well, it's good to see that for a change. As for my appointment, I didn't even have to wait, they took me in as soon as I walked in the door.youtube.com/watch?v=m8-n…  This is a video of my vet trip, I recorded it since it was his first time there. See for yourself how his exam went. I trust these people with my pet, and so should you. Read Less

I can't speak to the 'family vets' at the practice, but the surgeon, Dr. Draper, is amazing. When my dog needed surgery on her leg he took the time to explain every single thing. He did this despite my 10 month old son doing what babies do (fiddle with EVERYTHING!), and I never once felt rushed, or like he was annoyed. Another great thing is that spanned the gap between medical jargon and 'dumbing it down' very nicely. By this I mean he didn't blab on unintelligibly with medical terms a layperson can't understand, but he also didn't speak to me like I was, well, my 10 month old. I really felt like he respected my intelligence as an adult. The doctor really seemed to care about my dog and about my dogs comfort. The pain management was very good, and after the surgery when I felt like my dog was still in a lot of pain the next day I called the vet and they listened to what I had to say. As a result they okayed an up in the pain meds to get her comfortable as soon as possible.Dr. Draper has been more then willing to field my multitude of questions from about everything from when my dog can bathe to longterm management of the arthritis in her knee resulting from the initial injury. At no point did I feel I was being pushed to buy unnecessary services or medications. I have pet insurance for my dog (thank God), and I find hearing the word 'insurance' causes many vets to see dollar signs. This never seemed to be the case at Fairview. The after care for the surgery was great, and the followup appointments quick, easy and professional. The front of house staff is friendly, even on the phone, and seem happy. The vet technicians (the ones who pull staples, express anal glands, and do all the yucky work) were also all super nice and professional.I recommend Dr. Draper to anyone needing surgery for their animal. I wish he was a "family vet" too. Read Less

Unfortunately my only experience with this hospital was when my rabbit Pippin was extremely sick, I took him there. They were very straight forward and let me know that no matter what they did he might still pass away, they explained everything very clearly which I really appreciated. They let me know as soon as he passed away everything that happened, and were very sympathetic. They explained my options and helped me a lot. When I went in to say my final good-byes everyone was giving me their condolences. They even went above and beyond and sent me a card expressing their sympathy. I have had nothing but great service here. Doctor Dibilee for my bunnies was always fantastic- and fixed issues other vets (before i found her) couldn't. Yes it's pricey, but that's an issue with buying bunnies. Also, most recently Dr. Draper saw (immediately, I might add) my kitty who broke his leg. He was quick, took him for surgery right away, showed me the x-rays, explained the process, drew up an estimate (insanely expensive, but to be expected) and took him in for surgery right away.My only wish is that there was some sort of payment plan for underwaged and students. But they were great about taking a credit card that wasn't mine.Overall, I always have a great experience. Welcoming staff, helpful technicians, and top notch doctors. I was told by another clinic that Dr. Draper is the best surgeon in Halifax, and not to look any further. And he definitely was. The follow up appointment was great- he just wanted to check on the progress, which put my mind at ease. A Fantastic clinic for sure! Read Less

You could call this one visit, two points of view:My rabbit was in for a full physical exam including dental with Dr. Suzette Dibblee, the exotics specialist who was recommended by a friend that runs a small animal rescue. Dr. Dibblee and her technician were very knowledgeable about rabbits and spoke to us at length about a reoccurring condition and at home treatments. Dr. Dibblee dispensed an oral gut motility drug for future use and even calculated dosages for the Metacam and Critical Care we keep at home. This is the only vet clinic I know of in Halifax that carries specialized rabbit supplies including Oxbow's Critical Care. That being said their fees are quite high at $83 for exam and $135 for blood work. Read Less

Read Less

They're the best! I've been taking my cat Alfie here for almost 9 years and he's always received excellent care. He's had a few very scary health issues in his life so far, having to undergo some major treatments, but the team have always been kind and caring to both of us. Expense is a concern for me, but they have always been very transparent and outlined all costs before starting a treatment. They also have the best guest services manager, one Mr. Moo, who even lets you sit in his chair when he's not napping on it.

Even though my experience was very sad they were extremely helpful and very caring.Read Less

Read Less
