This place is great! The vet was so helpful and caring towards our little guy it was lovely to see a genuine care for our pet. He was super sick with some sort of stomach bug that made him constipated and pooping out bloody stool that we were worried we would have to put him down. The vet and his team was so helpful and compassionate it was lovely. The vet wanted to give us all the options available to us as well as home remedies to help ease his pain. The little guy pulled through! I would definitely go back again :) Read Less

Our 12 year old toy poodle began licking and biting her front paws excessively, staining her lower front legs with saliva. We took all the expected steps to discern what might be the issue however after a few months nothing seemed to stop her. Her biting was exacerbated because she has had most of her front teeth pulled. When she chews on her paws, she chatters her molars.
We took her to Dr. Matthews, who did a thorough examination and he questioned us about any changes in her diet during this time (looking for changes from before this biting started). He concluded that it was an environmental issue and suggested an injection of Cytopoint(Tm) which treats Canine Atopic Dermatitis. This is injected under the skin and amazingly in less than a day, she was no longer chewing or biting her paws. You can see that she is happier. After two weeks, we can report that there has not been any recurrence of the paw biting. She is back to being herself.
The care and treatment were first rate. We recommend this Vet, his care and this treatment! Read Less

Dr Mathews and Dr Baerle have cared for my cats and dogs for the past 25 years at the Ancaster Animal Hospital. Recently my German Shepherd developed a serious illness and Dr Mathew's initial and complete diagnosis was bang on despite two specialists reporting that nothing was wrong with the dog. The care and attention from the staff has been second to none with the time taken by Dr Mathews to explain and treat our pet whom we lost recently. As a health professional myself, I know what it takes to be a good practitioner. My wife and I are pleased with the service received for all our pets. Read Less

I have never written a negative review in my life as I know how detrimental it can be to a business. However, I want to share this to the pet community so that this does not happen to you.
The prices are unacceptable. Very similar to the last review. I moved back to Ancaster and came to this vet due to location. I knew the examination fee along with the approximate cost of vaccinations I was inquiring about before stepping foot in the door. I was prepared to pay $150 to highest $200.00 (based on prices I was quoted from Ancaster Animal Hospital). The vet pushed a lot of other vaccinations and did tests on my dog during the examination. (one he wanted to take the dog away from me and into the back ) . Never once did he mention a cost even though I asked several times. The vet talked in circles and he was very hard to understand. He repeatedly asked me if i trusted him?...
In the end, the Vet bill was $500.00. When receiving the invoice, my jaw dropped. For such a simple visit and a couple of basic vaccinations, the cost blew my mind. After heavy discussion, I would have never approved testing or other vaccinations if I was aware of the cost. It blew my mind that this was the way Ancaster Animal Hospital does business. One of the major cost was heart worm test $85+tax and heartworm pills for $65.00. I was not told that there was a cost to the test nor was I told about the pills.
From one pet owner to another this vet may not be bad, he did seem knowledgeable and gentle with my dog. However if a cost is a concern for you as it was for me... do your research before choosing a vet. I clearly did not do enough. I will NOT be going back to this vet which is a shame because the location was very convenient. The whole situation could have been prevented if cost was talked about prior to any testing and injections. Overall, very disappointed with my experience. Read Less

I moved to Ancaster from Toronto. A city known for it's expensive places. I was sad to say goodbye to my long time vet of 12 years but excited to get my two dogs and cat enrolled at a new vet in beautiful Ancaster! Little did I know what I would uncover. I called almost all of the vets in the Ancaster, Dundas, and Hamilton area and got a price check. Ancaster Animal Hospital was the highest and also the closest to my new house on the farm so I decided to go with them due to location. I took one of my dogs in for her annual checkup, the "vet" checked her heart and then just stood there and pet her and talked to me about living in Toronto! When I got out, a $83.90+ bill was slapped down for JUST the visit! On top of that, $35.99+ for shots (only one), $77.20+ for HEARTWORM TEST!! WOW! I paid $18 in Toronto and they had to send it out to another lab. This place has the lab right in there! And lets not forget $47.90+ for Parasite test which is $10 in Toronto.
So, Ancaster Animal Hospital tells me that their prices are this astronomical because they "provide a level of costumer service". Ok, so I'm paying almost 50% more then in Toronto so your staff will be nice to me? LOL. Then they tried to tell me that their prices were high because they "follow the LAW according to the veterinarian association". Hmmmm. A Law that tell you how to price things? I own a business and I don't have that kind of law, and I work with children! Interesting.
So, in short, if you're looking for someone to talk too and have a great conversation -- go here! Otherwise, I would save your money for a therapy or spa day instead.Read Less
