My French Bulldog was diagnosed with a mast cell tumour. I live in Toronto and my regular vet referred me to an oncologist. However, after speaking to several people (vets included) I was told that most vets do the surgery themselves. I was told by a friend about Heart Lake and called and explained my situation to them. I stated that the tumour was quite large, that the oncologist was only available for a consultation and that I would prefer to have it removed quickly if possible, also hoping that it would cost much less. I also told them that it was quite large and in an awkward place on his face. I was told that it would be no problem and I booked an appointment for Wednesday night to have him checked out, leave him and have the surgery the next morning. I arranged to take this time off of work and school. When I met with the vet Wednesday night she expressed that the tumour was a bit larger than she had expected but said it should be no problem and that if the blood work was good, she was good to go and would call me the next morning ONLY if there was an issue with the blood work. I signed the consent and estimate and went to my friend's, where I had arranged to spend the night. The blood work came back fine but she said she no longer felt comfortable doing the surgery (obviously the tumour had not changed size or shape overnight nor did it change location. She said that if I did go to the oncologist and found it was too expensive she would consider doing the surgery but would prefer I went to the oncologist first. I was quite upset because not only had I cancelled the oncologist appointment (which could not be rescheduled for another ten days now) but because I had arranged to miss two days of work, which also means that I have less money for the oncologist. When I called my regular vet to ask about him contacting the oncologist for an estimate I asked why he hadn't offered to do the surgery himself and I was told that it was for the same reason as the vet at Heart Lake hadn't done it. In my opinion it seems that this might have been part of the vet's decision at this place. I am deeply upset at the fact that this vet contacted a vet simply to say she wouldn't be doing the surgery and that this was done without my knowledge or permission. When I contacted Heart Lake to ask about this, I spoke to someone in a high position ( I can't recall the exact position as I was quite distraught) and was told that she had been with the vet all day and that this phone call had not taken place. I said it obviously had and suddenly she was able to locate the file where it said my vet had been contacted. I find it unsettling that on Wednesday the vet had no issues doing the surgery but had several the next day, one being, that I hadn't gone to the oncologist, which I had made them aware of both when I booked the appt and when I had Moose examined on Wednesday. I am very upset and think the lack of transparency is worrisome. I am also upset that I was charged for blood work that was supposed to be done in order to have the surgery, which wasn't done. Had the surgery not taken place because of the blood work (which was the only reason I was given for it perhaps not taking place) I would have understood, but the blood work was perfectly fine. They stated that this had been done in Moose's best interest but it has pushed back his surgery significantly and if they were concerned that I hadn't gone to the oncologist first, they had the chance to express this on Wednesday. At which point I would have taken Moose home, went to work and had the blood work done wherever his surgery was taking place. Had I been told at the time of signing the contract that there was a chance they would change their mind or that the surgery wouldn't be done irregardless of the blood work, I would not have consented to anything being done.
