First, Dr. McKinley will spend zero time with you, talking to you about your pet. You are essentially just paying to speak with the vet techs.
He will rush off while you are speaking or try to hang up if you are on the phone. I have never seen a vet bail out so quickly from a conversation.
South Howard also has almost no technology. I needed my cat’s file sent over to another vet – they couldn’t do it because a) they don’t have a scanner b) they don’t have an email.
For anything related to my cat’s file, I was told to come in and take pictures of it.
My cat had an unusually hard issue – injection site sarcoma. I can understand this would be outside of Dr. McKinley’s knowledge base, but his actions were very unprofessional.
My cat had a large lump on her leg, which needed to be removed. Dr. McKinley “felt” it out, couldn’t recognize it, and said it should be removed.
He didn’t suggest a biopsy or anything to know what it was before surgery, which I now know was a critical mistake. Injection site sarcomas need very large incisions.
Additionally, from the surgery, my cat now has permanent issues with her leg and looks to be in constant pain from the surgery. Injection site sarcoma is painless (I spoke with a radiologist at Michigan State University), so I know it is the surgery.
So I have spent bout $1300 for a botched surgery and more for x-rays.
I should also mention they will add things without asking and will make you pay for them. Dr. McKinley needed to sedate my cat for one of the x-rays, adding another $125 to my bill.
This an actual chop shop. I have no idea how this mess of a veterinarian still has his license. I would really encourage you to go somewhere else if you actually love your animals. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

If I could give zero stars I would. I nearly lost my boy to the negligence of dr McKinley. Unbeknownst to me at the time my dog had every symptom of diabetes and I had been referred to this veterinarian by many people. Close to 15 visits over four months, a misdiagnosis of COPD and thousands and thousands of dollars spent for my dog to continue dying in front of me. I had to syringe feed him for four months to keep him alive long enough to finally get at my wits end and return to my previous vet for a second opinion. Within one vet visit he was diagnosed with diabetes. Within days of being on insulin he was back to himself and eating well. He does not have COPD. I begged and cried to them to please do full body bloodwork on him because I knew something else was wrong. They just kept doing CBCs and blew me off when I asked why. They kept prescribing him different medication‘s that weren’t doing anything and we’re extremely expensive. The final straw is when they put him on prednisone. It literally nearly killed him. And undiagnosed, untreated diabetic dog on prednisone is a death sentence. Dr. McKinley has absolutely no bedside manner, he is rude and misogynistic. And when I confronted and threaten to sue he yelled at me in the middle of his office and told me that I should have known my dog had diabetes. As if it’s not his job that I’m paying him to figure out. They did give me a good chunk of my money back but I will forever be sure to steer anyone in the area away from this negligent veterinary clinic.
If you truly love your animal and want what’s best for them take them somewhere else.

If you need to get your pets regular shots it is best to make an appointment. It's also wheelchair accessible. They do boarding but I don't care for it because my pet would be in a cage all night long and most of the day. They sell a good range of pet foods and I found the place very clean

I was charged $150 just for antibiotics and then found out I could of gotten a script sent to Walmart pharmacy. Meds would of cost me $25 there. The vet refused to allow me to return the unopened meds (the next day) so I could save a little money off my bill.
The lady on the phone said, "oh you could of asked us to do that yesterday." THANKS for letting me know it was an option. Especially when they knew I was upset with the bill.

My indoor kitty got out and rolled in something that matted her fur like glue and all my best efforts couldn't get it out. My regular vet recommended south howard for their grooming services. They had to sedate her to get her cleaned up and shaved but they did a fabulous job and took care of an infected absess as well.they kept me updated every step of the way and even called to check on her a few days later.The price was reasonable given that not only did I use their grooming services but she was due for her shots and a Checkup.The location is a bit in inconvenient but the service was worth it.

I have been bringing my dog here for just over a year now. My dog was diagnosed with congestive heart failure by this vet. He has to be on 3 different pills each day. Unfortunately, these pills are very expensive and I had to find alternative means to get my dog his pills. I found an online pet pharmacy in Canada that would ship the pills to my house (takes up to 2 weeks). The pills are same ones I was getting from the vet but for 1/2 the price. In order to get these pills I would have to have the company fax my vet the referral form, they would complete the form and fax back to the company. The reception desk would say they weren't receiving the request, I would call back the company, they advised they had sent it multiple times, I would call back the Vet and they would have mysteriously received it by then. It was like paying a game each month with them to get my dog his pills. I would often run out by the time i needed them even though i started the process weeks in advance. They would delay sending the prescription. I would have to call back multiple times to follow up. I found the front desk to be rude when I would have to call them for this matter. I understand that they make money off of selling their medications but some of us cannot afford these astronomical prices. The prices here are just unbelievably high. I have taken my dog elsewhere and upon talking to the new vet explained my needs regarding the medication (their prices were MUCH lower) and they have no problem filling out the forms. I have had to find a new vet due to the lack of willingness to help with the medications and high pricing.

Awful experience here. They did not asses my dog properly and gave her a shot without my permission that cost me $111.00 only for me to come back in two days later for them to tell me they gave her the wrong shot. Which they then wanted to give her the proper shot and charge me again. I asked why I would have to pay again if the doctor was the one who made the mistake and all they said was sorry you have to pay for the shots that are given to your dog. So I refused and took my dogs else where. Definitely would not recommend this place.

I have been bringing my dog here for just over a year now. My dog was diagnosed with congestive heart failure by this vet. He has to be on 3 different pills each day. Unfortunately, these pills are very expensive and I had to find alternative means to get my dog his pills. I found an online pet pharmacy in Canada that would ship the pills to my house (takes up to 2 weeks). The pills are same ones I was getting from the vet but for 1/2 the price. In order to get these pills I would have to have the company fax my vet the referral form, they would complete the form and fax back to the company. The reception desk would say they weren't receiving the request, I would call back the company, they advised they had sent it multiple times, I would call back the Vet and they would have mysteriously received it by then. It was like paying a game each month with them to get my dog his pills. I would often run out by the time i needed them even though i started the process weeks in advance. They would delay sending the prescription. I would have to call back multiple times to follow up. I found the front desk to be rude when I would have to call them for this matter. I understand that they make money off of selling their medications but some of us cannot afford these astronomical prices. The prices here are just unbelievably high. I have taken my dog elsewhere and upon talking to the new vet explained my needs regarding the medication (their prices were MUCH lower) and they have no problem filling out the forms. I have had to find a new vet due to the lack of willingness to help with the medications and high pricing.

Awful experience here. They did not asses my dog properly and gave her a shot without my permission that cost me $111.00 only for me to come back in two days later for them to tell me they gave her the wrong shot. Which they then wanted to give her the proper shot and charge me again. I asked why I would have to pay again if the doctor was the one who made the mistake and all they said was sorry you have to pay for the shots that are given to your dog. So I refused and took my dogs else where. Definitely would not recommend this place.
