Perhaps I WOULD have been pleased with the actual service/care, however ... I contacted KVEC upon the recommendation of my then regular vet whose office was about to close when I called regarding my 19-year-old cat needing to be euthanized. I was calling at 4:45 p.m. and they close at 5 and had hoped that they would stay a bit late, but they were not able to. I asked if they thought the cat might just pass away peacefully during the night or if I should wait until morning and bring her in - they said that more than likely things would not go well and I would have an "emergency" situation on my hands late at night with the cat suffering, and family panicking. I phoned KVEC and was quoted $350.00 to euthanize the cat, and something in the range of additional $300 - $700 for cremation, depending on whether I wanted her cremated with other pets, or a private cremation.
I was simply not prepared to pay $350.00 just for an injection to euthanize the cat - and I certainly wasn't going to pay hundreds for cremation (we would bury her ourselves). I decided that we would have to wait until the next day to go to our regular vet.
Unfortunately, indeed, hours later I did not feel that we could wait through the night ... and at 11 p.m. I recalled having driven past a 24 hour vet clinic near Cavan (on drives to/from Port Perry). Sure enough Cavan Hills Animal Hospital is open 24/7 and I called them: Their price was $150 for euthanasia (less than half the price of KVEC) and cremation costs were also less than half the cost. We drove to Cavan shortly after midnight - and while it was all very sad, we felt the staff were caring, kind and gentle .. and, also importantly, we didn't feel we were taken advantage of financially in order to make a quick buck off of our pets' suffering and our desperation to get help for her.
The next day I phoned my regular vet to ask if they were aware of the pricing charged by KVEC: Indeed they were NOT aware of this, and they were quite shocked and surprised. They assured me that their own prices are NOT anywhere near that, had I been able to wait until the next day, and that they would now rethink where they refer after hours emergencies to (presumably they now recommend Cavan Hills).
A happy ending, though: When at Cavan Hills there was a small kitten in a cage in the waiting area - he had been abandoned in the parking lot. We came back the next day and took him home with us. So, while sadly one kitty's life was over (after a long life for a cat - 19 years) there was another kitty in need of a home. Read Less
