With the Covid pandemic restrictions and severe shortage of veterinarians in Thunder Bay, the atmosphere in most vet clinics has changed. Cross Roads is no exception. My dog became ill on the weekend. I used their after hours online service costing $105 and was finally contacted by Dr. Matthew Yerxa from CrossRoads. He seemed a bit grumpy to be disturbed on a Sunday and warned me that after hours emergency rates would apply (>$500) but said he would meet me in 20 minutes. Or I was given the option to wait until Monday. I chose to have my dog seen immediately. After examining my dog using Covid protocols, he was more understanding and friendly. He clearly explained my dog’s illness, its severity and offered two courses of treatment. One being very expensive and including a hospital stay and second being a more reasonable treatment plan from home. He offered me a second chance to ask questions but I was too shell shocked at hearing my dog was indeed severely ill. He also offered follow up for the next two days he was working. Dr. Yerxa was concise and clear. Another DVM later, told me I made the right decision to have my dog seen immediately as my dog was dehydrated and could have gone into shock before Monday. Although my dog is not totally cured at this point, I am confident she will recover under their care. Doc, Thank you for listening to me and caring for my dog, even when at first you thought it was just a minor issue and I was an overprotective owner. I am so glad my girl is improving and expected to make a full recovery.
I recommend this clinic. I realize that vets are extremely overworked at this time and their front room staff are taking the brunt of pet owner’s frustrations with Covid restrictions and procedures. If it means waiting on the phone for 15 minutes to leave a message and a couple of hours for a call back to save my girl’s life, then I can do that and pay the bill. Thunder Bay needs a pet owners course on simple pet first aid and or what you need to do in an emergency. Maybe one of the dog schools or the college could take this on to help the clinics in town. Also if the vets in town could hold a mass vaccination day at the CLE next to the Covid vaccination clinic that would help all the puppies & their clinics with the back logs. They could book the heritage building and have a vet from each clinic and just mass vaccinate the minimum requirements. Read Less

Terrible experience. With the vet shortage in Thunder Bay, I was forced to go back to Crossroads Vet only to have my dog be completely traumatized. We booked an appointment for a lump check.
Dr. Alexandra Kozak was the vet assigned to my dog. She was afraid of my German Shepherd and he could sense that. She told me “he looks scary”. He is 100lbs of love and has never given any vet troubles. He is truly a gentle giant. She blamed myself and my dog for not being able to get my dog examined. Instead of getting to his level, she would throw treats at him in fear. After not being able to get close to him, she suggested he get muzzled. Muzzling any pet who has not ever been muzzled and DOES NOT NEED TO BE MUZZLED is unnecessary and harmful. Dr. Alexandra Kozak is very incompetent and caused harm to my dog. Apparently, this vet has training in animal behaviour…
After not being able to put the muzzle on my dog, she insisted that he was being protective of me so she took him to the back. All I could hear was my dog screaming and crying and seeing multiple staff tackling my dog through the window. I had to ask the receptionist to go get my dog and he ran right for the door to leave the vet.
My dog loves people and has never had any prior issues with his behaviour. When I contacted the manager, she barely gave me the time of day to explain my situation and hung up on me which was completely unprofessional.
Due to the the vet shortage in Thunder Bay, I now have to drive to Dryden for my dog to see a COMPETENT and TRUSTWORTHY vet who knows what they are doing. Read Less

Just recently moved to Thunder Bay from the GTA. We had our dog booked in at the kennel for 3 days as both myself and my girlfriend were going to be away for work. We realized the day before that our previous vet had not given her a specific vaccine needed to be admissible to the kennel, so we were in a mad panic to find a new vet last minute to administer the required vaccine. Called every other vet in the city and was either turned down or laughed away because everyone was unable to schedule an appointment for at least 2 weeks. Called Crossroads just before closing on a Thursday and had an appointment booked Friday morning. Great facility, and very pleasant and professional staff, that was more than happy to book our dog in and take her on as a new patient. Was in and out in less than 20 minutes with a happy dog. Looking forward to our next visit at our new vet! Well worth the 20 minute drive out of the city! Read Less

I then asked why I paid so much he told me that it was for his and the assistants wages! Then I said “so I paid $505 for my cats ashes to be thrown away like trash!” He replied with “yea I guess so”. I’m so heartbroken over how this was handled my baby didn’t deserve to die alone and then be discarded like he meant nothing when he in fact meant the world to me and my family. As soon as other vet offices are taking new patients we will be switching! Read Less

My dog spent 2 nights at Crossroads because she was critically ill from ingesting poison. It was not looking good but Dr. Legge and the staff helped save her life.
Detailed instructions were provided when we picked up our girl along with the special food and medication. Money was not an issue when it comes to my dogs and when I received my bill I was surprised to see how reasonably priced for the services and medications that was provided.
Thank You Dr Legge and all staff for the exceptional service you provided. Priya is doing well and looks to be improving every day.

Read Less

Absolutely, hands down, the BEST veterinary clinic in the region!
Sincerely, I have dealt with Crossroads for more than 20 years and found the entire staff over this period to be phenomenal. Nobody tries to up-sell you on services that are questionable. They don't sell third party products like food or dietary supplements. They provide 100% care and compassion towards your pet! They offer sincere and highly educated advice with concern to your pet.
Don't hesitate for a moment to give them a call when you have concerns regarding your pet of any sort. They handle all kinds of animals large and small.
Fantastic, rewarding, caring, compassionate, service that is comparable to none in the entire region! Read Less

They are a great place to go. But I've had the worse experience ever with them. April 3 2017 I called this place at 4:32pm on a Monday their hours say they are open till 5:30pm pm. When I called them about my dog who ended up with a huge gash on his neck that needed medical attention asap and they told me I quote " I'm sorry but we are pretty much done for the day", an hour before closing!!! I've been going here for years with every dog I've owned and for them to just shrug my dogs immediate medical attention off and end up having to call emergency line and paying out the a-hole for the emergency charge!! Not happy with this clinic what so ever!!!! Read Less
