Elgin Animal Hospital

General Info
The Elgin Veterinary Clinic was started in 1964 by two veterinarians, Dr. Sven Meeuwisse and Dr. Harry Short. It was a mixed animal practice dealing mainly with farm animals, and was located at 9830 Sunset Road, St. Thomas (across the road from its current location). Dr. Steve Stewart joined the practice in 1975. In 1976, the three veterinarians opened a second clinic, the Talbot Animal Clinic, and Dr. Stewart became the principle veterinarian at the second clinic. The Talbot Animal Clinic was (and still is) located downtown St. Thomas, and is a small animal veterinary clinic. Dr. Paul Headly was the next veterinarian to join the clinics and became a partner when Dr. Meeuwisse retired from practice.
Dr. Allan House joined the team in 1983, and became a partner when Dr. Short retired. During the late 70′s and into the 80′s, the Elgin Veterinary Clinic’s small animal practice grew rapidly, and it was decided that a new facility was needed. A new, larger, and more modern facility was built in 1988 – 1989 at 9789 Sunset Road, St. Thomas, and the clinic was renamed the Elgin Animal Hospital.
Dr. Adam Mahovlich started practicing veterinary medicine with the Elgin Animal Hospital / Talbot Animal Clinic (Collectively known as the Elgin Veterinary Clinics) in 2004 and became a partner in 2005 when Dr. Headly retired. In 2009 the Elgin Animal Hospital became an exclusively small animal practice and since then, the two clinics have focused on providing the most up to date, high quality care for their patients.
Dr. Allan House joined the team in 1983, and became a partner when Dr. Short retired. During the late 70′s and into the 80′s, the Elgin Veterinary Clinic’s small animal practice grew rapidly, and it was decided that a new facility was needed. I had a very DISAPPOINTING experience with the clinic. They were our cat’s vet. He is an indoor cat and therefore we haven’t gone for annual shots. Our cat was neutered, vaccinated and declawed at Elgin 6 years ago. Our 2 previous cats were regular patients there as they were outdoor cats.
In May I made inquiries about the clinic administering CBD oil to my cat to address his anxiety. They don’t pratice that medicine there so referred us to a website to seek out vets who could assist us.
We went to Burlington and in the process the vet diagnosed our cat with severe gingivitis issues which means he has to see an oral surgeon. I requested that all the information from Burlington be forwarded to Elgin. Once Elgin received the medical notes they dropped us as clients??? Why? I DO NOT KNOW AND STILL DON’T KNOW. The receptionist informed me that our cat hadn’t had a regular visit for 6 years. Leaving me with the distinct impression that they weren’t happy that they weren’t making money off of us. When I called Elgin to make an appointment for blood work and rabies shots in preparation for surgery I was informed that we were no longer clients and we would have to wait until August to have that work done…in the meantime my cat is experiencing discomfort.
I requested a call from the manager in charge and she called 4 days later. I shared with her that my feeling was that we were dropped because we hadn’t had a regular visit and didn’t make them money. I was informed that that was not a legal practice…but still no answers as to why we were dropped as clients. I was asked if they could do anything for us to return and I declined as I eventually was able to connect with another vet clinic whom I feel are VERY accomodating ( Shedden).

Worst clinic EVER - I had a puppy on April 1, 2021 and brought him in during COVID and after only one month of me "asking questions" the clinic FIRED me as a patient - its totally disrespectful and I have told my ENTIRE neighbourhood to never take their pet there - word travels quickly - FIRED with no valid explanation. This has been our vet clinic since we moved from Toronto in 2015. Great, professional staff, caring and compassionate. No "upsell" for unnecessary testing, a nice change from some clinics, where blood work and x-rays are de rigeur for everything. Our pets see Dr House, but I understand Dr Mahavlich is also pretty terrific.

This review is from 12ish years ago, Mr. Vet I understood it's a business, but I was very shocked at the lack of compassion you had when my dog who wasn't even a year old had double phenomena. We were unable to pay for the vet bills in full, begged for a payment plan, yet you stated pay to cure him or pay to put him down. I'll never forget that as long as I'm alive. Thankfully I found out about the Farley Foundation, and spoken to your secretary and she got in contact with. They stepped in and helped with the Vet Bills. Staff A++ The vet I dealt with zero compassion. I switched to Aylmer Veterinary Clinic, who was so much cheaper then you and had so much compassion for my buddy!

We had a very sick cat, they were gentle with her and explained all our options. Sadly she was not able to live. They were considerate of what we were going through, even staying late on the Friday of a long weekend so she didn't have to keep suffering. We will take our next fur baby to them as well.

Felt very disrespected about wanting to make my own desicion about not putting my dog down so my wife and I could spend one last moment together with him .... . I knew he was getting weaker and the vet stormed out of the room on me when I said . No I don't want to put him down here ... . I still can not belive the way I was treated . I took our dog home to be with my wife and I where he quietly faded away 30 minutes later . Surprisingly I still paid in full for the Disrespectfully ending 10 min service.

With the combination of very experienced vets (Dr. House has been our vet for over 20years!! And Dr. Mahovlich is an outstandingly caring vet) and compassionate staff like Mary, Sharon and Jackie. I know they will always make sure my pets get the best, affordable care. My dog is being treated for allergies and she's gotten such relief she has finally slept an entire night without an itch attack!! We're very happy <3 thank you!!

Dr. Stewart has been my vet for over ten years, he's amazing! I was a little worried about him retiring, then I met Dr.Mahovlich, and all my worries were gone! Adam is not only an amazing vet, but just a really nice, compassionate person. As long as I have animals, I will always go to Elgin Animal Hospital/ Talbot Animal Clinic. The girls at the front (Sharon, and Jackie) are amazing too!

The Vet (didn't catch his name) and vet tech were Incredibly empathetic and compassionate to my situation. Unfortunately I was not able to take my beloved Marley home with me, but the Vet was so supportive and caring about my heart breaking loss. I'm devastated by my loss, but there is comfort in knowing that my cat was handled by nothing less than compassionate hands.

No "upsell" for unnecessary testing, a nice change from some clinics, where blood work and x-rays are de rigeur for everything. Our pets see Dr House, but I understand Dr Mahavlich is also pretty terrific.

We were unable to pay for the vet bills in full, begged for a payment plan, yet you stated pay to cure him or pay to put him down. I'll never forget that as long as I'm alive. We had a very sick cat, they were gentle with her and explained all our options. Sadly she was not able to live. I know they will always make sure my pets get the best, affordable care.
