Harjinder Singh Hearing Date : September 03, 2013 From the Canadian Veterinarian of Ontario Website! Allegations of Professional Misconduct failed to discontinue the surgery when noticed the extent of the bleeding in the dog’s mouth, and bruising during the surgery failed to maintain the standard of practice of the profession an act or omission relevant to the practice of veterinary medicine that, having regard to the circumstances, would be regarded by members as unprofessional the clinic recommended to the clients that the dog be taken to an emergency hospital because of the bleeding. Post-operatively, the dog required treatment at an emergency hospital overnight, where he received a whole blood transfusion which stopped the bleeding and then at the clinic where he was treated for thrombocytopenia. Brief Summary The panel and Dr. Harjinder Singh (the member) revised the allegations and accepted the following Agreed Statement of Facts. Please see the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CV O) Website search his name in discipline orders. Dr. Shammi Dhawan prepared the dog for Dr. Singh. .... A dog was examined at the clinic by Dr. Shammi Dhawan as the dog was bleeding from his mouth. Dr. Dhawan confirmed the dog’s gums were swollen. Dr. Dhawan performed a pre-operative examination and ordered a pre-anesthetic blood analysis. While the blood was being analyzed, Dr. Dhawan arranged for an intravenous catheter to be placed and the dog was started on intravenous fluids for the dental procedures. Dr. Dhawan also ordered hydromorphone. Bruises developed on the dog’s legs where intravenous accesses were obtained for the blood that was drawn and the insertion of the catheter. Dr. Dhawan reviewed the results of the blood analysis which revealed, among other things, that the dog’s platelets were dangerously low. Dr. Dhawan nonetheless proceeded to anesthetize the dog. Shortly after the member arrived at the clinic and assumed responsibility for the dental surgery. The member was not told about the bruises on the dog’s legs and he was also not told that the dog’s platelets were dangerously low. Among other things the member performed an oral examination and began scaling the dog’s teeth. In the member’s view, the dog had significant periodontal disease and required multiple tooth extractions. Dr. Dhawan obtained the owners’ consent to these additional procedures. The member asked Dr. Dhawan about the blood test results before any extractions. Dr. Dhawan told him, more than once, that the blood work was fine but the dog had “mild anemia”. Without personally looking at the results of the blood work, the member proceeded to extract all of the dog’s teeth except the lower canines, incisors and the last molar tooth in each quadrant. The dog was bleeding from his mouth more heavily than the member was used to seeing during the surgery and as the dog came out of the anesthetic, the member noted bruising around the dog’s eye when he turned him over partway through the surgery. The member gave the dog a shot of prednisone and Decision The member pleaded and was found guilty with respect to the allegations. The College and the member had negotiated an Agreed Statement of Facts, including an admission of professional misconduct. Reasons for Penalty and Costs Decisions The member agreed to waive his right to appeal in order that he could receive the verbal reprimand at the end of the hearing. Read Less

Thought they would be a good place as there close to home and have been there for quite sometime but they are rip offs. Had my dog examed and they missed his anal gland during the exam which petsmart found a week later took him back payed 30 dollars to have them drained should have been found by the vet not a groomer. Secondly we were told he had to come back for a booster shot a month later cause he got a new shot not a problem how ever i go in to do his shot and get charged another exam for what they missed stuff the first. When i inquired about the exam charge they say its law anytime to exam anytime they see him. Well my old vet never charger to do another exam so he could get a bosster. I get its a bussiness but this is just ripping the customers off.. will not return to this vet. They dont even deserve 1 star. Read Less

The staff are always friendly and cheerful and make you feel welcome. I always appreciate their help with my pets’ meds and their food. My friend’s dog was completely healed by Dr. Singh after being seriously injured in a car accident. This shows to me the high level of his skills. Both Doctors Singh are very kind and knowledgeable. I’ve been taking my dog and cats to them for years. Dr. Suki Singh often treats my pets and Is equally talented. The facility is very nice and is surrounded by lawns and gardens. Been coming here for almost 11 yrs. Attentive in the begining but over the years noticed a big declin in the clinic. They are more about the money than the caring of the animal. My dog went to the emergency hosptial & we were told the report would go to my vet. Vet didn't even call me to follow-up, I had to call, but they were quick to say they had after hours emergency care. They didn't care enough to call to find out how my dog was doing but were quick to say I should bring my dog to them for after hours emergencies. A Month later I called Dr. Singh's emergency number TWICE telling them it was urgent and I believed my dog was dying. No call back to this day, so I took him to the emergency hosptial, sadly my dog died by the time we got to hospital. I'm digusted that NOBODY even bothered to call us back from Dr. Singh's office to find out what happened. Very unprofessional & empathetic. Conclusion they were always just about the money. After having a telephone conversation with the receptionist, I don't think I'll ever come here again. i am writing this review not because of the Vet's lack of knowledge in cat health, but because of their awful, rude, condescending RECEPTIONIST/OFFICE ADMIN. Specifically, the dark-skinned girl with curly hair who sounds like a squeaky doll. I am very sorry, but every time I call and she picks up, I clinch. Whenever I ask her questions, her response is for me to go to the clinic to check the product. Excuse me, but if I wanted to do that, I would go travel to your place of work and check it myself, but because you are already there, why don't you check it for me??? If I have a relevant question about a product that they sell at the clinic, it is unprofessional and brings great disservice to not provide me this information if she is literally a 2-second walk to check the product. This is called CUSTOMER SERVICE. When she called me to remind me of an annual vaccination/rabies shot, I was trying to explain to her about my schedule and she immediately hung up on me. further, when I got pet insurance and asked her to kindly set up a system so that I can process the insurance forms via email, she was RESISTANT and it took me several follow-ups to get her to respond with the vet's signature on the forms. She even tried to make an excuse that she cannot scan the forms because the machine is old or doesn't work properly (by the way, I have the same machine). What kind of an excuse is that?? when she somehow miraculously scanned and sent me the signed forms, they were completely fine and acceptable by the pet insurance company. I don't know what she is yammering about. They didn't replace the machine because the same machine is still there and it functions. Essentially, customer service is so bad I moved vets because of HER. I got along with the other vet assistants and whoever covered receptionist, however. At Dundas West Animal Hospital, I asked a question about a product and the receptionist actually walked into the back and checked the product. They took the extra step to help me. They are more expensive and further away, but I think they are worth the excellent service. When I asked about setting up the processing of pet insurance forms via email, they immediately provided me with the form, asked for my signature and kept it on file so they can process it every time I request for it. They are also very prompt and responsive to my emails. Read Less

I initially went to Birch Dan Animal Hospital to request an allergy test for my ailing cat Coco. Dr Harjinder Singh examined my cat and told me that she did not suffer from allergies (as the vet from Willowdale Animal Hospital suggested) but rather, that she was dying of cancer. He was compassionate in the delivery of the diagnosis and instead of profiting from my vulnerability, he instead suggested cost-effective tools of diagnosis the situation. His predictions were accurate and my cat passed away shortly after (she was too advanced for treatment). However, even after the cancer diagnosis was finally confirmed by Willowdale as well, they still tried to shake me for whatever money they could. I'll never forget how knowledgeable and compassionate Dr Singh was. He even followed up with me weeks after our visit even though Coco was not a regular patient. I highly recommend this vet. The vet killed my cat. They said they could save my cat and so we paid $1000 worth of money entrusting the vet to save him. My cat was supposed to stay at the vet for 3 days but he died on the first. So much money spent and cat dies on first day. The last time i went a few years ago, my cat had a problem with blinking in one eye. They could not figure what was wrong with him. They did multiple blood tests and other tests and charged me hundreds of dollars and in the end did not find out what was wrong with him. Vet just told me to buy him eye drops? So for my cats whole life buy him eyedrops? Doesnt make sense... till the day he died, one of his eyes still had trouble closing..... I didnt want to bring him to other vets because i was scared each vet would be the same and not find out what was wrong with him and I would need to pay the same amount of money (hundreds of dollars ) again. Overall this place is ridiculous and I would NEVER EVER recommend this place to ANYONE. They just scam you for your money. Read Less

If I were writing this review 4 or so years ago I would have given it a 5 stars. The vets are helpful and informative and Cecille was a pleasure to deal with. Within the last 2 years I kept seeing less of Cecille and more of a new vet tech (not mentioning any names). At first she was fine, not very friendly but not rude either. I come in at least once a month to buy dog food and more if my dog needs to see the vet. Every time I would come in and no one else was at the front with her she would be so rude. To define rude, her tone was condescending, she always seemed like she needed to be somewhere else and she never looked my direction when talking - always at her computer or down at a paper. I thought I was coming on bad days so I never though to complain. I brought it up with 3 of my friends who take their pets there and they all had the same reaction. She was rude to them too so it wasn't just me. I liked the vets there so I continued to go in but just with a thicker skin knowing she was just always rude. Anyways, this one day my dog had something wrong with his paw so it was a day of appointment. They needed to take him to the back and I told her I would be back because I left something in the car. I didn't end up leaving cause I realized I had it so I sat in the waiting room. I could hear this girl yelling at my dog and I KNOW it was her because she has a very distinct voices I was furious but I'm not the confrontational type and I knew the vet was back there with her. When my dog came back out he was shaking. Since that day, we never went back. Every time we walked into the office my dog would whine and scratch me so we could leave. I thought it was because he remembers what happens at the vet (shots, dental cleaning) but at our new vet he has had all the same procedures done and he happily goes in and stays. I would consider going back, like I said the vets did nothing wrong and the other staff that I interacted were very friendly and helpful. It's very unfortunate that this one person is ruining this place. Read Less

We recently got a new puppy, and I am a first time dog owner. I went to Birch-Dan Animal Hospital, and we obviously had a ton of questions. The staff and doctors were very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with us, answered all our questions and really took their time to explain. We felt comfortable with them and their approach to our little boy. He has gone in several times now for his vaccines and also got neutered. Each experience has been nothing but positive. Every time, we are greeted with a smile, and the doctors are very compassionate and caring. I had called around several clinics for prices before choosing Birch-Dan, and I found that their prices are competitive. Also, I think you get what you pay for. The quality of services I received for my little pooch at Birch-Dan was well worth it. One weekend, our puppy got into some trouble with vomiting and diarrhea, and we started to panic, since he is so little and we worried about him getting dehydrated. We called Birch-Dan, without realizing that they were probably closed. However to my surprise and relief, the vet answered the phone, and I was able to have him looked at right away and he was fine. I was so thankful that I didn't end up having to take him to an emergency hospital. The fact that they are available after hours is a big bonus. Highly recommended.Read Less

DO NOT BRING YOUR PET TO THESE SCAMMERS. THIS PLACE WILL OUTRIGHT RIP YOU OFF!!! For two years in a row, I've taken my dog for his vaccinations here. They have to do a physical with his shots and advertise that the shots are only $12, BUT the physical is another $50 something. For those same two years, they've cut my dog's nails and that was always included in the package at no charge.Today, I ask my sister to take my dog in for his shots and ensure they cut his nails free of charge as that was always included in the past. They cut my dog's nails, bring him out and add an ADDITIONAL $21.50 to my bill without ever advising me that there was this charge. I hate this place from the bottom of my heart. My sister then advised me of this charge and I called the receptionist on the phone who then said "no, no....there is a charge for that," to which I relied "no, you've never charged me in the past two years" and she says, "well.........now there is a charge for that!" I will NEVER EVER return to this scamming place again. They nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING and find every excuse to charge you for ANYTHING. Why the hell would I take my dog to get his nails cut at this place for $21.50 when Petsmart will do it for $11?? HEED MY WORDS: STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. My cat, 8 years old, broke her foot under the care of Dr. Sukhi Singh during an exam for another medical issue.  She jumped off the exam table while Dr. Sukhi was talking to us, because she wasn't holding her down.  Poor little thing caught her foot in in the drawer handle of the drawers built into the exam table on her way down, before she landed. Will never forget how she shrieked when it happened.  2 days until they x-rayed her, with a neglected fracture despite calls to ask about this.  2 months with a cast, locked in a crate at home to restrict movement, and ongoing check-ups and bandage changes with sedation.  The clinic paid for only half of the cost. Medical bill totalled $3000.  Any calls to the vet required dealing with Tameka, the vet assistant, the coldest, rudest, most condescending person.  What a horrid person to have to speak with during a traumatic ordeal.  You'd be better off anywhere else. on Friday January 27th of 2012 i took my french bulldog Daisy to have her teeth checked since i noticed excessive drooling and licking. the vet mentioned that he thought it would be a good idea that we fix her or she could develop breast cancer or other things later on in life. since my dog was a rescue and didn't come with any viable information i thought that it would be in her best interest to have her spayed. i took her in on Friday and picked her up on Friday night. when i got her home i let her have a little water since the vet said only a bit and noticed that every time she took a drink she vomited foam. i didn't like the way she was acting and the next morning noticed she didn't look well. called the vet and he asked for us to bring her in. we brought her in 20 minutes after he asked us to bring her in and he said he wanted to keep her for a few hours to give her an IV drip to hydrate her. fine, i let him take her and agreed to call before 2 pm when they closed. i called at 1:10pm and he informed me that he was taking her into surgery again because he suspected internal bleeding. all of this happening without my consent. he called back after surgery and said he couldn't find the cause of bleeding and restitched all that he did yesterday and said he wanted to keep her overnight for observation. they closed at 2pm and from 2pm till 12am midnight she was going to be checked on and then left ALONE till 8am. at 12 am i received a call saying she was fine and that i could pick her up at 9am the following morning. at 8:45am the day i was supposed to pick her up i received a call saying that my dog was NOT doing well and that they were opening her up for a THIRD TIME!!! i was horrified! not 20 minutes later i received another call from the doctor sounding alarmed and said i needed to come to the clinic immediately. he said she was bleeding EVERYWHERE and that he thought she was missing some sort of clotting agent in her blood and that she was ultimately was go in to die. i had NO choice but to sign for them to put her to sleep. after all was said and done my father asked the questions that couldn't have been asked since it was such a dire situation and they were beating around the bush about the situation and everything that had taken place. on top of that someone called my father and proceeded to ask for more money AFTER they failed to save my dog. I think this clinic is the WORST place to take and animal and would NEVER recommend any one take ANY animal there EVER! ask questions and get answers before you hand over your animal or this could be you... i lost my best friend because of the doctors negligence and non professional work habits. i hate these people for what they did. Read Less

Read Less
