As per the College of Veterinarians Ontario’s decision in response to my complaint filed against a veterinarian at Bloor Animal Hospital (BAH): “The dental surgery performed by the veterinarian…was performed in an incompetent and negligent manner which caused suffering and pain to the dog. In particular, a) The veterinarian left root remnants in the dog’s mouth. b) The veterinarian failed to inform the owner about the root remnants left in the dog’s mouth. c) The veterinarian failed to record in the medical records that root remnants were left inside the dog’s mouth. The dog had a tooth root for tooth 303 that was penetrating the gingiva, along with a number of tooth roots still present in the bone.” Tooth root 303 was discovered and extracted by our current veterinarian at a nearby clinic, but the other three embedded in her jaws were left as is because an excavation attempt at this point would have posed a separate surgical risk on its own. The retained roots pose an ongoing risk of discomfort, pain, and other pathology which may compromise my dog’s health and longevity. The College defended the veterinarian insisting that the veterinarian apologized. What I had hoped for were transparency and accountability, i.e., an explanation of investigative efforts made, full disclosure of all testimonies, and a voluntary refund – none of which were offered. I sent a letter to BAH asking for a refund of $2,916.44 which is what I spent on the surgeries that were not conducted in accordance with veterinary standards as outlined in the College’s decision and reasons and the procedure to extract tooth root 303. In response, BAH sent an insurance claim adjuster, who proposed a refund winnowed down to $181.75 and demanded a full and final release. He stated “you would be entitled to be put back into a financial position that you would have been in had the error not occurred, as best as is possible. With respect to the procedures, these were necessitated due to your dog's dental health rather than any error by our insureds, and as such the costs of these procedures are not a compensable damage. Case law is clear that a service provider is entitled to compensation for their work, even when a portion of that work may fall short of standard.” I wrote to both the College and BAH (via the claim adjuster) questioning the fairness of this, but they did not respond. The refund is about principle. I will not sign a release for $181.75 or any amount below the actual cost, as that would implicate that my dog’s health and well-being do not matter. This is not even considering additional veterinary costs I may incur to address future complications. To topvet: I have x-rays, medical records, expert opinion, and other documentation to back up the above—and much more. I can be reached via Gmail should you require verification. Read Less

during an emergency and during the covid pandemic lockdown, your staff wouldn’t sell me insulin for my diabetic pet and instead advised that I hop from vet to vet to find someone else. This is incredibly irresponsible. Not to mention the reason I stopped going to this vet in the first place is the blatant disregard for the animals health and the fact that you only seem to care about the money. My pet couldn’t receive insulin because you “hadn’t seen him this year.” Clearly you don’t care for animals at all. Read Less

After 7 years as a client with my three dogs, I am very disappointed with how Bloor Animal Hospital has let me down. This was a clinic I trusted and recommended to others. Just this week I defended them when a friend told me about a recent bad experience they had however, they have now lost my trust too and I will never go back. Dr. Downer has always been wonderful and a vet I’ve trusted so I have only good things to say about her. Unfortunately, this week I experienced such incompetence from the reception staff regarding a screw up over my 15 year old dog’s heart medication, which he has been on for 5 years, and then a lack of accountability and responsibility from another doctor (not Dr. Downer) that I can never trust the clinic again. Conduct trickles down from the top and after my disappointing conversation with the owner/doctor today, I’m not surprised by the reception staff’s unreliability and complete indifference. Perhaps this is an isolated bad incident, or maybe things have gone downhill. Read Less

I have found their on-staff Veterinarians to be very informative when it comes to my dogs check-ups, medications that he needs, and in rare cases when he has issues outside of the norm - very attentive. I took my dog for a complementary "dental exam" the tech didn't even introduce herself and did a poor exam of my dogs teeth she lifted the lip for two second and started typing on her computer. My dog was not put on the examination table or anything. Felt like I just went there to get smack with a $1500 estimate with no reasons I don't mind paying to have a dental exam for my dog and getting a throughly explain estimate but this was just a waste of time, they shouldn't even offer it, with the crappie job they do . She didn't even explain what was needed, just more of THIS IS WHAT THE PRICE IS AND WILL BE DONE. She had questioned weather or not my dog was spayed. What does spaying have to do with dental? I would not bring my dog back here again. If they can do a crappy job with a "complementary exam", then I don't trust them to do any exam on my dog..  BTW the tech that did the complementary exam from Bloor Animal Hospital, when you perform complementary job do it like you actually enjoy it and it's not making you miserable. I've been bringing my fur babies to this team for a few years now and I can continually impressed by the support they offer. I sadly had to bring my cat after a lost fight with cancer... not only did they offer me emotional processing time after each step of the event but they offered comfort and guidance... never making me feel rushed during this heavy time. The empathy and softness that the team offered truly supported me and I couldn't be more grateful. And if that wasn't enough they made a paw print of my baby free of charge... and on top of that.. they sent flowers to my home and a sweet note several days later! This was the first time I have had to make this type of decision but they made it the best possible version it could have been. I took my 15-yr old MinPin in for fleas and deworming - I needed to change vets as I haven't been happy with my current one. The place is conveniently located and has late hours - total bonus! Reception staff are really friendly, Dr. Julie Downer was very nice, personable and honest.   The facility is clean. The vet techs are also friendly. Their fees seemed at par with what normal vets in the city charge. (Especially in a pet-crazy area of the city like Bloor West Village, High Park) I'd certainly recommend it. Read Less

So, we went to Bloor animal hospital for a second opinion and Dr. Julie Downer very patiently explained to us that it was just some fatty tissues and drained it all with no surgery. She was excellent with our dog and we decided to permanently change our clinic to Bloor animal hospital. Without Dr. Julie Downer's help we could have been scammed in another animal clinic. I have gone to this clinic for few years. The service is the worst. The owner (or someone claiming to be the owner) told me over the phone, this is business when I called with my concerns. In my opinion, business of dealing living things is not just a business. My biggest problem was they charged me an astronomical amount for vaccination called Advantage last summer 2016. When I told him my last vet was charging me $50 less, I got such an attitude and condescending behaviour that I had to take my "business" somewhere else. I told her I would like to order this online so I asked for a prescription. They charged me for $25 for the prescription that was part of non-regular appointment that also cost me about $90. When I protested that a prescription fee was too high since I was paying for an appointment that did not result anything else except the prescription, her response was this is business! How can you charge the same meds in such different price for the same neighborhood?I got Advantage online and even with the $25 prescription fee, I still saved $20. The point is this vet is not in the business of helping animals but business of making money aggressively. My dog had some serious licking issues for all the time he was under their care, not once did they recommend a cure or treatment.  Guess what? He had a tooth problem. Every year I had assessment, they never did or recommend or said anything. After the robbing of the prescription fee, I left them. My dog had a loose teeth taken out (which they never noticed) and he no longer licks. He suffered so much under their care so rather than focusing of charging people such ridiculous amount for writing prescription, they really should have noticed the suffering of my dog!The support staff at the receptionist are friendly and professional. That is about the only thing going for them. I hope they pay them well.Trust is the most important element of a vet and the dog owner relationship. If you tell them money is more important to them, you are in fact, just telling them to find another vet which I did.I will not recommend this vet to anyone. Read Less

I recently moved to Swansea with my two dogs -- an 11 yr old Am Bulldog mix and a 3 yr old Boxer mix. My hairy friends are large sized (25kg and 29kg) and fairly muscular and I have had experiences in the past where vets are clearly less than comfortable with bigger dogs. Not so a Bloor Animal Hospital! First off, the receptionists and technicians are amazing. My older dog has a number of skin and neuromuscular issues so we have visited the clinic a couple of times already and each time we are greeted with so much joy and tenderness. Both Dr. Downer and Dr. Morris have seen my pets and both vets are amazing. Its obvious they care, but more than that, they aren't trying to push services on you like so many other clinics do. They let you know what they have in mind and provide you with a few options to consider. I like that. In terms of fees, I think they are fair. In comparison to what I paid for similar services in Silicon Valley, this clinic is far far less expensive for equal or better service. Put it this way, my current lease ends in a year and staying in close proximity to Bloor Animal Hospital will be a priority for me! Read Less

I usually don't write reviews but this time around I wish I read a comment about this clinic. I came there for my chihuahua who has neck spasms/pain. They charged me the full session 78$ and it took 10 minutes so the doctor did not took her time to explain much but rather asked me if I had questions. She also gave me the worst case scenarios like 'you might need to look into a 8000$ surgery if she ends up having back problems or spinal cord compression' or 'you might need to come back to do X-rays, CT and MRI'. Meanwhile, I called my friend who is a surgeon Vet in another town who confirmed that spinal cord compression happens to dog around 2-3 years of age which is clearly not the age of my dog (she's older). She also pursued by telling me that other non invasive treatments like corsets could be taken into consideration which was never explained to me during my 10 minutes consultation. The vet I saw was shy, did not seem like she really knew what she was doing. I was expecting to meet someone to answer my questions and be a little reassuring but instead, I was more nervous when I got out and was imagining the worst. She also performed a neurological test on my dog and I had to ask her if she passed the test....She would have not tell me so I would have kept imagining that this could be a possibility. She also prescribed 1-2 weeks of meds (painkillers/anti-inflammatory) but said she would not prescribed muscle relaxant because 'this is not something we prescribe at first'.....euh ok why? Obviously they want you to come back for more and charge you again for another consultation by pressuring you to get X-rays. I emailed them a few days later, curious of the prices for the tests and they sent me this quote for 500$. That was the last straw. I found another vet who I'm musch happier with, took their time with me and is not trying to rob you over your pet that they know you love so much! Read Less

We had our first visit with our new puppy here just this past weekend and so far I'm very happy with the service I (or more specifically my little guy) received. The Bloor Animal hospital has a very convenient location, literally at the base of Jane along Bloor so no matter where you're coming from there is ample public transportation and Green P parking lots close by.Entering the clinic, we found the reception staff to be very friendly and helpful, however, it's hard not to be friendly when you walk in carrying an 8 week old French Bulldog puppy. On your first visit with a puppy they schedule you both for a puppy information session where a vet-tech gives you some great tips, tricks and things to be aware of in the first year of a puppies life. That first visit also comes with a lot of pamphlets, some free puppy treats, a huge bag of puppy food and few other trinkets. The vet that saw us was very friendly as well and was great with our dog. He was so comfortable around her that he passed out (to be fair, he passes out every 15 minutes but I'll give her the credit on this one ha ha).We like this location for our little guy and we're looking forward to our future visits and check ups. I am so happy with the service I recived at The Bloor Animal Hospital this afternoon! I ended up at the clinic because my regular vet told me they could not see my cat, even though he desperately needed someone to take a look at him because of potential blockage to his urinary tract. I called my vet at 1:30 (they were open till 4:00) and I was told they could not make room for him and that I needed to take him to the emergency vet instead. I quickly looked up vets in my area, and all seemed to close at 2:00 on Saturdays, but The Bloor Animal Hospital was open till 5:00 (that's a plus!). When I first called to ask if they had any appointments they told me they had none for the rest of the afternoon, but when I explained my situation further they told me they would take a look as long as I got there ASAP -- I was so grateful! Even though my cat wasn't a patient at their clinic, I felt they understood the potential severity of the situation and really put his well-being first. The vet I saw was very thorough in explaining what was causing his symptoms and took the time to ensure I understood everything that was going on. We discussed treatment approaches as well as best/worst case scenarios which, I found very helpful in deciding on how to proceed further with treatment. After the exam the vet followed up with procedures that were being done in-house, and the friendly staff gave me a well packaged sampling kit (for urine) and some "reading homework" to better understand his condition (it's always a lot to digest while everything is happening -- again, this was helpful!)Unfortunately my time at the vet isn't over, and I have to continue to follow up with sample testing, but I am feeling pretty good with my overall experience and will be switching to this vet clinic indefinitely! I was very nervous about picking a vet for my new puppy, but after reading reviews for all of the vets in the area I chose Bloor Animal Hospital and I'm SO glad I did because they've been absolutely amazing since day 1.Dr. Lyons did the initial check-up and was fantastic, she walked me through puppy ownership, insurance and was so good about giving my puppy her immunizations that she didn't even notice she got 3 needles - the easiest vet visit I've ever had.I've also seen Dr. Morris who was just as fantastic - I found a lump on my puppy's side that I was worried about and was told I could come in that night to get her checked out. He was so friendly and great with the pup, and quick and efficient at looking at her and reassuring me that it wasn't a dangerous issue. I was done at the vet's office within an hour of making the original phone call (which was at 10:30, when most other vets would be closed). The reception and the rest of the staff are also wonderful - they're extremely friendly and patient and obviously love animals. There's never a shortage of treats or belly rubs! I've never felt like they've pushed me to get products or unnecessary tests, and I love their late hours because I never feel like I can't call for any issue. From what I've seen so far, they've got a lifetime patient with me and my pup :) Read Less

I have 2 cats that I've been bringing there for one year now and it's been a year too long. They killed my cat! Yes, by that I mean is that they authorized the neutering of my 1yr old cat knowing very well his condition. He became paralyzed right after his operation and after they said they couldn't see him cause they were too busy, they said to go to the emergency. After seeing another vet 2 times, there was nothing we could do, we had to put our cat down, we tried steroids but that didn't work either. So we called back Bloor Animal Hospital again to advise them that their written decision costed the life of our cat and that we at least appreciate it if they could put him down at no cost since their approval cost his life, not to mention that the quick visit approval had cost us 80$. They said they would have to charge us 200$! The receptionist was very cold and didn't care at all and even said they never approved the neutering. I beg to differ since I have all the documents from them stating this... Read Less

I came here based on raving Yelp reviews. I'm so cautious with my kitty, that just by reading the reviews I knew we should be in good hands. Upon my first visit, I ended up having to wait 30 mins due to an emergency appointment. But the staff was very sympathetic, and put me in the exam room, gave kitty some water and a litter box so that he can roam around. A nurse came in to take initial temperatures and such, and was super friendly and kind. We had a good discussion about food - another topic I never know (I feel like there are too many conspiracies in pet food and try to feed the kitty good foods, but never really know for sure). When the doctor finally came in, I think kitty was up to his tolerance level, and they offered to take him to another treatment room to do the shots as long as I was okay with it. They also offered to trim his nails!A few days later, I got a follow up call, very friendly, to see how he was doing, to give me an answer about how much food he should eat (based on weight), and other info I was asking about. During a follow up appointment, just the same level of kindness and enthusiasm. These folks are genuinely friendly and caring. I don't know how but they made me and kitty feel like we were the only ones in the place that they were caring for and didn't brush me off. They also encourage pet owners to call in anytime with questions. What I also love is that since it's also a hospital, they have later hours than other clinics, up til 9pm ! Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

I don't live near this place but they were available for my puppies who I thought needed an appointment ASAP for shots I read about online. I drive by at least 3 places on Bloor before I get here but I have decided to stick with this place. Have seen 3 different doctors in the past month as my puppies needed shots and got sick. They have all been understanding about my needs as I am a new to puppies and ask many questions. They are thorough and offer detailed explanations. I brought in both puppies even though I only booked the appointment for one because after I booked the appointment, the other girl started sneezing a lot. The doctor was kind and only charged for the check up of one girl even though she checked both girls. I don't know how much other places charge since these things aren't available on their sites but I don't think you can out a price on good health care.

Nothing but good things to say about the Bloor Animal Hospital.  I found them here on yelp and next to Kerr St Animal Hospital in Oakville they are the best I have found.  They are extremely professional and sensitive to both the needs of the animal and the owner.  They don't jump to the surgery conclusion, they do try alternative medical treatments.  I find their pricing to be extremely fair. The hours are incredible.  Most of all they are very easy to talk too.  I live at Islington and Evans and its a 15 minute drive but well worth it.  And my 15 year old Maddison who has had nothing but medical issues loves them....:)   I don't think she is too keen on the enemas!!! Been coming here for 5 years. The vets are very knowledgeable and nice people. The hours are quite long and if you are a regular client they will fit you in for an emergency right away.

Read Less
