Our cat was not feeling well and having issues urinating, so we took him to see Dr. Clara Bureau. Within a few minutes of being in the office, she was able to diagnose the problems. Dr. Bureau kept him overnight to give him fluids and to monitor his symptoms, and we took him home the next day with a few medications. After a few days, Watson was back to his usual self. Dr. Bureau even called to make sure he was doing well - we really appreciated that. Dr. Bureau was wonderful in explaining everything and she gave us recommendations on how to avoid future problems. All of her services were priced reasonably, especially for the quality of care Watson received. We highly recommend Dr. Bureau! Read Less

I was a patient here until I moved out of the Toronto area. Having worked at other clinics and the veterinary emergency clinic, I can say with confidence that, had I not moved out of the city, I would still be bringing my fur babies to Dr. Bureau. She is knowledgeable, compassionate, and truly cares about the welfare of the animal over price of the appointment. I would definitely recommend Dr. Bureau if you are looking for a respectable, knowledgeable, caring and compassionate Veterinarian. Read Less

Do not recommend. I know that animal medicine can be more of an art than a science at times given they are not able to tell us what's wrong, but I just want to warn others that I did not have a good experience with this clinic. I know they are not bad people, but I just think that there are better options. Despite expensive blood work and fecal analysis they were not able to come up with a reason or solution to my dog's digestive issues. Thankfully I declined having him admitted overnight which would have cost me $470 and surprise, he's fine. I was continually buying the digestive i/D food for a couple months and his issues lessened but were not solved. I managed to solve his digestive issues on my own with a suggestion from a PetValue employee... Attaching receipt for evidence this is not a "fraudulent review". Second photo is of my dog, healthy and well after a recent trip to his new vet. Read Less

Dr. Clara Bureau is the owner veterinarian at Fraser-MacDonald Animal Hospital at 1632 Bloor Street West. We have been clients of this veterinary clinic x 35 years and Dr. Bureau has been a wonderful vet caring for our two older dogs and my daughter’s young dog through the past few years. She is approachable and compassionate, and has been willing to explain and offer options for care for our pets. We have been given the opportunity to pursue all avenues of treatment, but have not been pressured to perform prohibitively expensive tests or treatments as part of our dogs’ treatment. She has made herself available for follow-up appointments and after-hours for emergencies and has been reachable by email or phone. Dr. Bureau has been regularly available for urgent appointments, and the clinic has parking, which is really helpful when trying to deal with a sick dog. We will continue to bring our pets to Dr. Bureau for care, and recommend her and Fraser-MacDonald Animal Hospital for providing excellent veterinary care for pets. Read Less

After being overcharged by another vet, we took one of our cats - Folle - to this vet a few years ago and were super impressed by the service that she provided us. Not only did she charge us about half the price that the other vet down the street was trying to charge, but our cat came home happy, healthy, and ready to take on the world. While this operation was about 2-3 years ago, our now senior cat (~12 years old) is still active and loving life. :) Read Less

Dr. Bureau is a wonderful veterinarian, and I have had many visits/opportunities on which I base my review. My beloved cat of 13 years was diagnosed with aggressive mouth cancer. I was heartbroken. Dr. Bureau provided me with several treatment options, but was very frank about how much time I could possibly be buying. I decided to have her put down, because the cancer was already blocking most of my cat's throat, and she wasn't able to eat anymore, only licking the juices from the canned food. She already lost weight. The day I put her down, Dr. Bureau saw how upset I was and was very patient, giving me the time I needed, and again, offering a temporary solution to keep her a little bit longer. I decided I couldn't prolong my cat's suffering, so I had her put down. Dr. Bureau prepped my cat and then came to get me, to allow me to be with her during her final moments. When it over, Dr. Bureau patiently stood by and allowed me to cry and cry. Dr. Bureau went over and above for my dog as well. During the time my cat was being diagnosed/tested, my dog was also being tested for cancer for a growth on her behind. Everything was happening at the same time, and DESPITE having pet insurance for the dog (because I was only going to be covered if the growth tested positive...read between the lines of your polices, people), Dr. Bureau was kind enough to lower the prices of some items, as costs were quickly rising for the cat and dog. On another occasion, my dog was suffering through a bought of diarrhea (about one week). When I called in, Dr. Bureau was out of country, so I left a message for her to call me back when she was back in the country. I received a call that same day and Dr. Bureau arranged to have some medication ready for me to be picked up the next day. I took the dog in to see her when she returned and made payment for the medication at that time. A few months after my cat passed away, I adopted a stray kitten. The neutering went well without any complications. Just under the two year mark of my new cat, he became ill with (I didn't know this at the time, but did some online research) a urinary infection/blockage, which is fatal for male cats. I called the vet on a Friday night at 10:00 p.m. fully expecting to leave a message on voicemail. I was surprised when Dr. Bureau picked up the phone. We made an appointment for first thing the next day. The next morning, my cat was listless, not moving, just his eyes. I quickly put him in his crate and raced down to the appointment earlier than for what it was scheduled. I entered the clinic in tears, explained to the receptionist that something was really wrong with my cat. The receptionist made a call and Dr. Bureau came right over (she wasn't in the office yet). She made a quick assessment, gave me a couple of treatment options based on whether she could unblock him herself, but prepared me to take him to the emergency vet clinic in the event that she couldn't. Thankfully, she managed to unblock him and she managed to save him. He was in very bad condition infection wise, and we just managed to get him on time. He was kept a couple of nights on watch, flushed with IV and antibiotics. As you can imagine, expenses were rising, but again, Dr. Bureau worked with me and helped me a bit on the pricing. Since then, my dog has gone in for another surgery to remove a growth from in her ear and on her leg. Again, surgery went smoothly. I also adopted another cat from THS. She was a bit a of a mess health wise. Dr. Bureau was able to determine that was she was allergic to the type of prescription food she was on, which was making her ears bald. We changed up the food, still prescription, and voila...the fur on her ears grew back. I have 100% trust in Dr. Bureau with my animals, which I love dearly. I honestly don't understand the bad reviews. That certainly hasn't been my experience. Read Less

This week I took one of my cats in to see Dr. Bureau, as he'd managed to get himself a nasty scratch behind his left ear and was, being a cat, making matters worse by scratching at it himself. Dr. Bureau did all the things for the wound a good vet does, but what distinguishes this visit is the fact that, as Toronto had had its first snow of the year the night before, daily deliveries of medicines had been delayed. Thus the ointment prescribed was not available when I was at the clinic with the cat. Dr. Bureau undertook, then, to hand-deliver the ointment to my house after the office closed. Granted I live only about 6 blocks from the office, but this still seems an extraordinary level of service, one I certainly haven't encountered from any number of other service-providers. Read Less

I had a wonderful experience bringing my beloved 18 year old cat to see Dr. Bureau.  My cat had been experiencing mouth pain so I brought her to our old vet in the east end (we had recently moved to High Park and didn't have a new vet yet).  The old vet (whose clinic gets 4.5 stars on yelp) gave her a quick exam and concluded that she likely needed some teeth extracted but would first need a blood test, ultrasound and xray because of her age.  She referred us to a dental specialist and quoted $3000 for the procedure, plus we had a three week timeline for the surgery or else we would have to do more blood work!  This was extremely stressful as I didn't want to put my old girl through unnecessary anesthesia and perhaps cause more health issues down the line.  But what other option did I have?  The old vet only prescribed enough pain meds for a few days so I needed to find a vet close to where I live in order to get more.  I walked by Dr. Bureau's office and decided to pop in to scope it out.  The office was quiet and old school (not renovated to "pinterest" standards like most vets these days).  I was able to meet Dr. Bureau and speak to her right away (unlike many vets who are too busy to consult with you unless you make an appointment).  I brought my cat in a few days later and Dr. Bureau was so thorough in her checkup.  The old vet seemed more concerned about not being bitten even though I assured her my cat doesn't bite.  Dr. Bureau was able to examine my cat thoroughly and confidently.  She concluded that she didn't need her teeth removed after all!  Instead, she drained and cleaned the abscess, prescribed antibiotics and a less severe pain med.  I am so incredibly grateful and happy to say that my cat fully recovered within a week and it has been almost three months since we saw Dr. Bureau.  Dr. Bureau will not jump to expensive and drastic conclusions.  Instead, she will take smaller steps to determine the root of the problem.  She saved me thousands of dollars and saved my precious girl from going through procedures that she didn't need.  I would recommend Dr. Bureau to anyone who is looking for a no BS vet who will give you the time of day and actually knows what she's doing! Recently we took our very old and sick dog to the clinic and after a conversation with Dr. Bureau, decided it was time to end the dog's suffering. We were not treated very sensitively as we were not told how quickly the drug would take effect. We were not able to hold her or comfort her as we would have wanted as the dog basically died right away and fell over on the table. We are not only left with the guilt and sorrow of having to say goodbye to our beloved pet, but this awful awful memory and guilt associated with her last moment in which we were not able to comfort our baby as we would have wished. I will never be able to put the image out of my head.I wish we had spoken to my aunt before deciding to take our dog here.My aunt previously took her cats and dog to this clinic and recently started taking them elsewhere. The dog, very friendly and loving and normally happy to come to the vet, was fearful and unhappy when arriving and approaching the doctor. This is extremely rare for him, so we know he must have a reason that my aunt did not have a chance to witness. This clinic is not what it used to be when the previous veterinarian was there. Veterinary practices are private businesses, so the staff should certainly provide good bedside manner and practice sensitivity towards their patients and their families. It is very easy for us to go elsewhere in the future.I hope nobody ever has to endure what we did at the hands of these people again. Read Less

We have been going to Fraser MacDonald for many years and we have had no problems until recently. We had problems with the new vet who recently started working at the clinic. We have two cats,  a boy and a girl, two different breeds and one year apart (he is 1.5 and she is 6 months) and two weeks after they both got shots we noticed huge lumps in both in the exact spot the shots were given. We were told that we should operate immediately to determine if the lumps are sarcomas. The chances of a cat developing this tumour from the rabbis vaccine are between 1in 1000 and 1in 10000. What are the changes that this would happen to both our cats?!?!?! We went for a second opinion and we were told that it's most likely a granulom (not cancerous) causes by the vaccine used (adjuvents in the vaccine) and the way the shot was administered. The previous year we had no problems with the boy so we asked what changed. Apparently the vaccine used was stronger (don't understand why when both are indoor cats). Read Less

Dr. Fraser was recommended to me by a colleague when I was researching for a new vet for my cats upon the retirement of my previous vet. I took one of my cats to him for a check-up and shots and liked him very very much; he clearly loves the animals and I felt confident I would stay with him for the ongoing care of my two cats based on that visit. My cat had to have a follow-up shot and firstly, when I was given the appointment with Dr. F I ended up having to see another vet; he actually questioned the need for whatever follow-up Dr. F had told me the cat needed. I did report this to Dr. F and he seemed surprised. I was not at all comfortable with the other vet. Another appointment was also messed up when I specifically asked that it be made with Dr. Fraser and was assured it was, only to find when I got there he was not in that day and the appointment was made in error. I also had to wait over an hour.I know that Dr. Fraser's reputation is stellar and based on my first experience with him, I would have stayed with him. But the poor receptionist service and the experience with the other vet made me decide to seek vet care elsewhere. While I generally go to the same vet within a clinic, I still want to make sure I have other options should my preferred vet not be available. Unfortunately that would not have been the case here.I would give a 4-star for Dr. Fraser himself; and I am in no doubt at all that the other excellent reviews are accurate. I have to assume that my experiences were relatively unusual and were no reflection on Dr. Fraser himself. Read Less

I had a good experience here 2 years ago when my cat needed to have a battle wound patched up.So when he got sick this past saturday, I brought him in.  I don't recall the Dr's name, just that he had a Russian/Romanian sort of accent. He poked and prodded the cat and stated that he needed to perform a procedure and give anaesthesia.  However, they were closing at 2 and not open on sunday, so he couldn't.  I could take the cat home and maybe he'll be ok until monday or maybe the cat would almost die and I'd have to rush him to the emergency clinic.Stunned, I asked if there weren't any other options, surely I could take him somewhere else even though it's a saturday.  I got a shrug in response. Then he relented and said he could dope the cat 'a little' and maybe it would work.Scared and confused, really not wanting to take the cat home, I said he should try that.  I was instructed to come back before 2.At 1:30, I got a call informing me that he had failed and I should come get the cat and take it to the emergency clinic.By then, I had found the Royal York Animal Hospital, which is open 7 days.I called them while picking the cat up and they accepted me right away.I feel terrible for leaving the cat at Fraser-Mac for those few hours, I should have taken him home and looked-up more clinics.I was so ill-informed.The Dr at Fraser-Mac completely neglected to tell me anything useful about the cat's condition or the cost of the procedure.Stay the hell away from this guy and go see Dr John at Royal York. Dr Fraser also cared for our previous dog for the latter half of his life.We can't say enough good things about Dr Fraser and his practice. What we love most about Dr Fraser is his no-nonsense, minimalist approach. He'll tell you if you're worrying for nothing and never suggests anything--procedures, food, anything--if it isn't absolutely critical. He'll explain the pros and cons of his recommendations and what the alternatives are. His approach and attitude are in such stark comparison to the big-box-store-chain animal hospitals in Toronto. You know the ones. You walk in and everything's glossy and there's a TV and free coffee. But you walk out and you need a second mortgage to pay your vet bill. But it isn't really about money. I've taken my pets to the 24 hour hospital in what I thought was an emergency and I'm immediately panicing when the vet is listing off the list of things that could be wrong and tests that need to be done and administration of IVs and hospitalization. But sometimes in those situations I decide to wait until Dr Fraser is open and it's always ended up being a simple solution at a reasonable price. For us, Dr Fraser is hands-down the best in the city. I have been taking my cat to this vet for over 10 years. When, at 16 she contracted terminal liver complications the entire staff were extremely sensitive to my needs as a grieving companion. All my options were clearly explained, which enabled me to make the necessary difficult decisions. And after my cat passed away I received an unexpected delivery of flowers from the staff at the animal hospital, and was truly touched by that kind gesture. I have since adopted two young kittens, and needless to say, will continue to take them to Fraser-MacDonald. Read Less

Bureau!

Read Less

We recently took our cat to Fraser-MacDonald animal hospital as he was quite sick.  Note: Dr. Fraser passed away recently and another Vet, Dr. Bureau, purchased the clinic.Dr. Bureau has been treating Kiwi over the past month or so, and I have to say that she (and her staff) have been really great. Dr. Bureau has been very considerate and very thorough. She's always on time for her appointments (horray!!) and she made time for us on the same day as we called. She also does not jump to conclusions and takes the time to explain things. The staff have also been great. ie. Our son chose to stay in the waiting room during Kiwi's appointment, and one of the staff took the time to let him help feed the fish. Overall both my husband and I have been really impressed with how Dr. Bureau and her staff have gone above and beyond. Read Less

I have been going to Dr Fraser for about 10 years. He has cared for my two cats for the last ten years and my current dog for the two months since we've had her. Read Less

My pug and I have been visiting Fraser-MacDonald Animal Hospital since he was just wee. After having a terrible experience at another vet, it was refreshing to go to a wonderful place like this. The front desk staff are lovely, and helpful and the doctors are patient with my dog's fidgeting and nervousness. They have pet food and some pet supplies for purchase in the office as well. I would recommend this office to any pet owner in the High Park area. Read Less
