I don't usually write reviews but after the devastating situation that I experienced at Leslieville Animal Hospital I feel compelled. My review isn't actually on 'the clinic' but one vet that works there, Kerry Tate. My situation goes back roughly a year and a half prior to this incident where my dog had to have a large tumor removed from her liver. Fast forwarding a year and a half later, my dog experienced a completely 'non-related' eye issue, so I took my dog into the vet to have her assessed. I first saw the original owner of the clinic, Steve who gave me some eye lubricant to try. Steve sold the clinic during this time and consequently, on my second visit I was introduced to a new veterinarian, Kerry who would assume my dog's care. My dog's eye was still problematic and needed to be reassessed. Also, we had results back from a stool sample taken on the earlier visit which showed my dog had a parasite. Kerry gave me medication to treat the parasite and told me her eye situation 'could be' caused from a tumor but she was uncertain. She didn't request blood work to see if there was anything 'off' with the blood. We decided that the dog needed to see an eye specialist. After alot of back and forth, Kerry decided to start my dog on Meticam which is some form of anti-flammatory, amongst other things. She told me if the dog started to vomit to stop it right away. I was under the complete understanding that Kerry knew what she was doing. Kerry never discussed any of the risks of Metacam nor did she explain that one of its potential side effects was that it could cause liver failure (which would have been significant knowing my dog's medical history where she had undergone liver surgery only 18 mths prior). After I administered the first & ONLY dose, my dog became immediately sick and started vomiting. I stopped the treatment right away but it was too late as my dog started on what would become a very rapid and downward spiral. Over the course of six days following that one dose of medication, I had to rush my dog to the emergency hospital on three separate occasions and on the sixth day, sadly I had to put poor Lily to sleep. She was in liver failure and there was nothing they could do. I was completely heart broken and I strongly suspected that this unnecessary medication killed her prematurely. After this I had spoken to several vets, including the hospital where Lily had the surgery to remove her tumor. I was advised by all of the vets that I consulted that my dog should have NEVER been given Medicam under ANY circumstances due to the fact it can cause liver failure and Lily had a very sensitive liver due to her medical history which Kerry was always privy to. I was devastated because although unbeknownst to me, I gave her this medication that ended her life but at the direction of the veterinarian who should have known better. Whether intentional or not, my sweet dog died prematurely because of her utter lack of knowledge. Like I said, I never write reviews but I can't just let this go, knowing others could share my precious dog's fate so this warning is the least I can do & in honour of my Lily. Read Less

I left a bad review a few days ago about Leslieville Animal Hospital but I want to share how Stephen, Owner of the clinic did. He personally reached out and genuinely apologize and asked me what he could do to fix the issue. But let me tell you something you won't hear to often in a review. He went Way Beyond what you could expect from a business for customer service. Mistakes happens.. Sure but, what he did to fix it totally impressed me and he didn't have to do that much. That tells you a lot about he cares about his customers and this is what you wanna hear from a review. BRAVO Stephen. You are the vet I have ever seen. Read Less

This is the closest vet clinic nearby where I live. I went there for an eye infection with my dog. During COVID, we are not allowed to go with our pet and i'm OK with this. Once the Vet calls you, they describe what they think the issues is. I am not going to argues with them, but I'm starting to feel that every time I got, there is excessive amount of treatment and medications prescribed. This clinic love their pain killer even if you tell them that your dog is in no pain. But I agreed and took them. The vet told me that we need to take care of the situation immediately and she would need to see the dog again in 48 hours for a follow up insisting that the situation needs it. I asked to go get 2 of the medication myself in a pharmacy and I agreed to come back if the pharmacy didn't have the medication needed. 30 Minutes after, I called back to ask them to get the eye drops ready but the receptionist told me that they will only provide the medication in 2 days. I asked to speak to the vet and I was denied to speak with her. They don't really care about your pet, this is a very profitable business and totally unprofessional to deny me from speaking to the Vet. They really abuse of your feelings for your dog to make you pay. Read Less

I visited this hospital not under the best of circumstances as it turned out. My cat hadn't seemed like herself and I wanted her seen by a vet. I was able to book an appointment the next day and was seen by Dr.Avery (the owner). Long story short, my baby had advanced terminal cancer and I had to make the gut-wrenching decision to ease her suffering and put her to sleep. Every step of the way every person at that hospital was fantastic. I never felt pressured to make any decisions, Dr.Avery supported me with kindness and walked me through every step. Prices were laid out very plainly from the beginning for any tests and procedures and nothing unnecessary was done. She had a very peaceful passing, the staff at the front even putting out a candle and a sign asking for silence as someone was saying goodbye to their loved one. The cremation/memorial company they use (Pets above Ltd) was also amazing, caring and efficient. About a couple weeks later, I got a letter from the University of Guelph's Charity OVC Pet Trust saying they had received a donation from the doctors and staff at Leslieville Animal Hospital in tribute to her memory and I was so touched. It was a horrible situation that they helped to navigate with such care and empathy that I can't thank them enough. I fully recommend this hospital for any pet parents. Read Less

Dr Neely is fantastic! Our maltese/bichon mix Milo has been experiencing a lot of skin issues (itchy/swollen eyelids, chewing at paws, etc) over 6 months that three previous vets couldn't pinpoint the cause of, and that had forced us to keep him wearing a cone almost 24 hours a day. Heather was patient, kind, and listened to every data point we could think of in order to get a comprehensive view of the situation. She identified that he's experiencing allergies and not only found us a medication that cleared all the symptoms almost immediately, but also recommended dietary and environment changes, and referred us to a place to do allergy testing. Heather has been so helpful, very responsive, and clearly really cares about the pets in her clinic. Thank you, Heather! Read Less

I began taking my dog and cat to this Dr. Steve Avery's clinic soon after he opened his doors for business in the Mt. Pleasant and Davisville area.  It's now been about 5 years and there are so many reasons why I trust him with caring for my pets!  I left my other vet after about 15 years going there because Dr. Avery manages his clinic not only as a business (as it's understood he is entitled to operate a profitable business) but he also truly cares for our pets!  Dr. Avery discourages unnecessary costly tests or treatments and encourages non-intrusive treatments and natural remedies as much as possible! For example, for a year my dog showed signs with yelping from intermittent lower back pain  for about a year at the age of 8 which at the time, Dr. Avery suggested that, for an otherwise very healthy and active mini-poodle in perfect weight (form), the pain was likely due to a pinched nerve.  If that was the case, he said an MRI would serve no purpose as it wouldn't show such a problem.  We did do x-rays to make sure there were no bone deformities (and there were none...not even any arthritis signs).  So he recommended a natural Glucosamine along with a natural regularly injected substance call Cartorphen instead of chemical medications to try in case there was minimal arthritis causing this problem.  When that didn't help, he recommended a very gentle human-used medication called Gabapentin.  But that did not help. During this period of time, I consulted a holsitic/integrated vet to help my dog and Dr. Avery was more than glad to communicate with this holistic vet.  Dr. Avery is also always willing to learn new information about new approaches to treatment or pet management and assess the possibilities of non-standard veterinarian pet health management  that I may learn from other sources. By a year into it, my poor little dog's femur dislocated from her hip (which meant that the intermittent pain she had for a year was due to a microscopic misalignment of her femur in her hip joint that didn't show up in the x-ray). But with surgery, she's been totally fine since!! Point being, Dr. Avery didn't rush to have me spend large amounts of money for an MRI when he didn't think it would provide any useful information or unnecessary treatments. Also, for all his services, his price compared to my last vet and a couple of others is often 1/2 of what the others charge.   I can go on and on ...of how Dr. Avery is a caring, competent veterinarian. The best vet in Toronto, and the best vet I have ever encountered anywhere! I have been visiting Leslieville Animal Hospital for 7 years now with my Shih Tzu/Maltese Holly (most recently this morning). I found this clinic after doing some research, after a bad experience elsewhere, and I wanted to find an amazing vet that I am comfortable with and trust. (Also I wanted to have a great vet that gets to know me and Holly). The level of service here is beyond fantastic, I love the staff here and the owner Dr. Stephen Avery is an extremely nice, honest and caring guy. I can be a little much when it comes to my fur-baby but I am never made feel like that here. Dr. Avery takes his work very seriously and he really cares for you and your pet. The clinic is located right on a streetcar stop (Queen and Jones), and is located in Leslieville; this clinic is worth travelling to even if it's not in your area. It is also extremely well priced, the staff are extremely knowledgeable and they always take the time to answer all of my questions and offer me advice. If you are looking for a vet clinic to take your pet to, I cannot recommend this place enough, I promise you will not regret it, and your pet will be the better for your decision too! Read Less

If I could give them 10 stars I would!!Dr. Alison Claydon, Katie (vet tech), and Natasha (client care) exceeded my expectations from the moment we walked in. Being to other vets in the past, so often the greeting feels cold and lacks compassion both for the animals and their extremely emotional owners. This was not the case at Leslieville Animal Hospital. Recently moving into the area, we were faced with an immediate need to find an in-area vet when our cat, Audrey, became sick on Saturday. Fearing time was of the essence, we looked up reviews and mapped out Leslieville Animal Hospital within walking distance. Boy, are we  happy to have found them. Upon entering, Natasha greeted our screaming cat with kindness and love. She spoke about her pets, and related to our worry and to how much we care for our fur children (without actual children, they truly are our kids). She also told me the exact breed of our rescue cat of 8 years, which I found to be very informative. Within a minute or so, she brought us and our Audrey to a bright, private room, and almost immediately Dr. Alison Claydon came in. Warm and welcoming, Dr. Claydon wasted no time asking about the symptoms and telling us our options. She spoke about pricing and gave us her advice, truly without bias or attempting an upsell. She took blood work, and told us we would get it back Monday. She also told us what to feed Audrey, what to continuously look for while we waited, and gave Audrey appetite pills to ensure she kept eating. On Monday, with Audrey not doing much better, Dr. Claydon called just after 11am to give us the results. Audrey had a bad kidney infection, and was invited back early afternoon to immediately start treatment. We were beside ourselves of course as that diagnosis can be VERY harmful, but very relieved to have received the results. Audrey was brought back in to the office, where Natasha remembered our "very sweet" kitty. From there, she brought us into the same room from before, and Katie explained exactly what they were going to do to help (and eventually save!) Audrey. She was slow in explaining (which I appreciated), and very upfront with costs. After an emotional goodbye to our cat, Audrey stayed the night at the clinic. Before leaving for the day, Dr. Claydon made sure to call me to say that Audrey was doing much better, and that Audrey was very loving and talkative to all staff members! She assured me she was in good hands and that she would update me the next day.Sure enough, the next day we received a call around noon asking for my permission to take final blood tests, and that Audrey (if we wanted) could come home that night. She was doing MUCH better!! We obliged with joy, and she made arrangements for us to pick up our baby girl that evening. :)As a side note - I felt the fee was incredibly reasonable for medication, pain killer, and an overnight hospital stay. You can't put a price on compassion, and it isn't something that is easily sold!Long winded, but this clinic is absolutely amazing. The doctors and staff care about your pet, and they also are empathetic to their clients emotions, pain, and even wallets. I will absolutely recommend this awesome clinic to all friends in the area and heck, I would travel from anywhere to ensure they are my vet for years to come. Read Less

We usually end up seeing a different vet every few times we go (as I often just say 'the earliest appointment you have') and each one has been really great. I like that they give you the option on treatments without feeling like a bad pet owner - what I mean by this is, they don't pressure you into unnecessary treatments, but instead say "you may want this, because of this reason" - usually if the dog is going to be staying at a kennel and they require certain shots.I also feel the price is reasonable & they have never pushed any products on us like the first vet we went to in Muskoka did. It's not just the annual check-ups or day-to-day inquiries, but also when the going gets tough, the team is there to help. I had a very sick cat a few years ago, Steve went above and beyond to diagnose the problem, even calling in external specialists. He then performed the operation that resulted in saving Max's life. I can't say enough kind words about this team, highly recommended. Read Less

My dog got into rat poison a few weeks ago. My regular vet is in Milton, as I used to live there, so I called the Leslieville Animal Hospital to see if I could bring my dog in. They did not hesitate to see us and got me to come in immediately. Dr. Liz Davis and her team were amazing. They treated Hailey and reassured me by keeping me informed about what was going on. They were kind, supportive and so caring and loving towards Hailey. I am forever grateful to them for their care and consideration. Dr. Davis takes the time to do the follow ups herself which shows the care and dedication she has for the animals. I can't say enough about the team. We are not one of their regular clients but they treated us like we have been seeing them for years. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank them. Dr. Steve Avery is the BEST vet I have ever been too.  I have had quite a few vets in my past, and I must say he beats all of them! He is very knowledgeable! You can tell that he wants the best interest for your pets! Not only is he the most amazing vet I have ever been too! I really can ask him just about anything.  He always answers all my questions and is very prompt! He is pretty much there for you and your pet 24/7! My dog Crosby has been scratching/biting paws since the day we have got him! Dr. Avery suggested to switch his food to an Kangaroo and Oat diet.  BUT of course Crosby really disliked this one.  We then put him on another food to try, and now he is on Hills Z/D.  The point is, Dr. Avery suggested a number foods and didn't put me right to allergy testing right away.  Which is VERY EXPENSIVE! He is always suggesting ways you could save money, but at the same time, he considers your pets health and well being most importantly! I could say this over and over again.  But I trust Dr. Avery so much! He is truly the most incredible veterinarians in the ENTIRE city of Toronto. Dr. Avery and his team will make you the happiest and most fulfilled pet owner (s) when it comes to vet visits! I recommend Dr. Avery and Leslieville Animal Hospital to anyone and everyone who loves their pets just as much as I do! I just LOVE Dr. Avery! And so does Crosby! Read Less

Always willing to patiently and thoroughly answer even the silliest of questions, everyone is super friendly and you can tell that they care about animals and people alike.Unlike a lot of other vet clinics, they'll also give honest advice on the phone when you call about whether it's worth bringing the animal in versus advising you to bring the animal in for every little thing just to make money. There's only one other vet I've encountered in my lifetime that was as great with my pets as the vets at this clinic and it turns out Dr. Avery worked for him as a student way back when! :) Read Less

I took in our 18 month old Silver Labrador Blue for a second opinion on an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury since we had received multiple conflicting opinions from our previous veterinary clinic.  Dr. Stephen Avery took nearly an hour and did a thorough exam and carefully explained both the surgical and non-surgical alternatives and potential outcomes.  For now we are going to go with the non-surgical approach since it appears to be only a partial tear and Blue is relatively young.  This will include anti-inflammatories, Glucosamine supplements and movement restrictions in the near term.  He even referred us to a canine physiotherapy clinic with a good record with these types of injuries.   Well it's been 2 months now and Blue is just fine.  We have continued the anti-inflammatories, Glucosamine supplements and movement restrictions and he seems to have completely recovered.  I am sure he will never have full range of motion in that knee and he will always favor the other one when he sits but that is what would have happened even with the $3000 surgery.  I will NEVER take my boys to any vet in Toronto OTHER THAN Dr. Stephen Avery.  He is our hero!

Read Less

My dog had a teeth cleaning a few months ago, and I really liked how they didn't pressure us into it. In fact, it was our suggestion that his teeth should be cleaned. They gave us a reasonable cost estimate of a scenario with a simple cleaning and a more complex cleaning, and even told us that the complex cleaning was an unlikely scenario despite us admitting that we almost never brush our 7 year old dog's teeth. Would definitely recommend. Read Less

I have never spent my time to write a review on Yelp however the service I had from them couldn't be missed.  I have yet even taken my puppy to this vet since he is only 8 weeks old.  I have probably asked over 10 questions after questions about puppies in general since I need to know and be aware of becoming a dad.  Andrea was EXTREMELY helpful in answering all of the questions with true honesty.  She is very knowledgeable and professional.  I would definitely recommend all my buddies to take their dogs to this location.  I will be visiting them for the first time for my puppy's 2nd shot in 3 weeks and they have already earned my loyalty to visit them year after year.  Thank you again! We've been seen by Dr. Avery several times, and once by Dr. Norwich. Each experience was excellent. Both these Drs go well above expectations. It is very clear that Dr. Avery has selected the right career for himself. He's fantastic at all aspects of his job, and that includes being extremely gentle and calming with a nervous cat and also with a very nervous new cat owner. His diagnosis and treatment of my cat's skin issue was bang on. He even called me a couple of weeks later to see how we were doing. As for Dr. Norwich, when we saw her, we were there for a specific vaccination, but she took the time to review our entire file and follow up with me on the issues from our previous visits. I really appreciated that. She also was able to make my cat completely at ease with her. I just totally trust this team. The front end staff are also very good both in person and on the telephone.
