For years I've come here, for my cats and for my dog. The last couple of times I went here, I had bad experiences. The first time I decided to dismiss it and accept that sometimes people just have bad days, so maybe that was why the front desk staff were rude. But recently I went to pick up something from my dog. The staff at the desk didn't look up at me, and as they sensed my approach, they looked at each other as though hoping the other person could deal with me, as they didn't feel like it. There were downright surly. No smiles, so greetings and not the slightest welcoming gesture. Having myself worked in the service industry for years, I was incredibly put-off.There was more to this visit that betrayed a company tendency to to stretch far to make you pay for more services than you require, but I'll leave it at that. I've since found a vet north of the city where my parents live and I'm happily moving all of my veterinarian needs there. Read Less

Such an unfortunate first visit with this clinic. I initially chose them because of their location and advertising of a fear free atmosphere. Perfect I thought for my pup who is nervous of nail trims.  Within the first 30 seconds of walking in the front door I thought I should turn around. The receptionist was incredibly rude with me, other customers and on the phone. As the front face of the clinic I would have hoped for a small smile, or a hint of wanting to be at your job that day.  The customer behind me even asked if she was having a difficult day. This didn't register with the receptionist, and just carried on with her sour demeanor.  I arrived ten minutes early to fill out new client paperwork, but unfortunately still had to wait another 45 minutes before a technician had time for our nail trim. There weren't any other customers in front of us. They didn't give me the option of staying with my dog for the nail trim, but I respected their choice and trusted they knew what they were doing.  When they returned I pointed out a few nails that were missed, and this clearly insulted the staff as they sighed at the idea of having to try again. They asked if we could just do the missed nails next time, but I insisted I wanted all nails trimmed today. I truly hope other customers don't have the same experience I did, and the receptionist hopefully has a better day tomorrow. Read Less

They are open until midnight on Friday's without charging emergency rates, which already earns them a gold star. The reception staff were pleasant, and they have a sassy office cat who is deaf and will sometimes let you pet her (if she hasn't just woken up). The vet was a cat lover who was patient and thorough. Prices were high but I was very happy I didn't have to take my cat to an emergency vet. Read Less

I really really like the fact that they are fear free certified. It means that they do everything they can to make your pets trip relaxing/fun and anything but anxious. They have adaptil everywhere and lots of treats of different kinds (my dog needs hypo treats). They also have a separate waiting section for cats and dogs to help alleviate any anxiety or fear. Desi actually will jump out the car and RUN to the vets door because he loves them so much. In terms of cost, they're on the higher end of middle tier but the doctors are pretty good about giving you all the options and are not pushy at ALL about anything. They won't do procedures that don't make sense and are very patient about explaining all the risks and possibilities with you. The technicians are also quite knowledgeable. They can do lots of different procedures as well as board your pet and grooming!  Have never boarded there though or used their grooming procedures because I prefer a groomer closer to me and my MIL watches him while we're away.Dr Steede is an especially wonderful dr. When Desi had odd values for his kidneys, she kept an ear out and heard about a similar case and came back to us later to explain the cause/issue completely unprompted. She is always thinking of her patients! Overall very happy with the treatment and experiences here. Read Less

I have been taking my pups here for the past 3 years. Aside regular vaccinations, there was spaying procedures, eye infection treatment, upset stomach and several other consultations at the clinic. Their working hours is the best since they operate practically 24/7 even on holidays and in general the staff is friendly and kind. It's true there is always an attempt to upsell services and the prices are high but my pups were always taken good care of and somehow were happy going there.Today for the first time I got a bad experience that really changed my opinion about the place and definitely I am not coming back. I walked in with my 6 years Frenchie who has been with diarrhea for the past 3 days. The staff was indifferent and almost hostile to us. I understand that walk ins are not the best scenario for them and that would have a bit of a wait for us but both receptionists were unable to show any empathy or kindness towards us. The fear free certification definitely was not in place today once my dog started to get agitated in the waiting room while the staff was unable to give her the treats and attention she usually gets when coming to the hospital, which made her more nervous about being in the vet.The staff didn't give us any estimation of time or explained to us the possibilities about getting us the appointment. My husband and I stayed there for less or about 30 min and we decided to leave. We didn't feel welcome and definitely didn't trust it was appropriate to trust our baby to an environment that was not acknowledging us.After 3 year I would expect to be appreciated and recognized as a customer. Where should I even begin. The doctor I met tried to upsell and tried to run all kinds of tests that I didnt ask for and made me feel bad for refusing them. She pointed out my current anti-flea, heartworm preventatives aren't good, and asked me to get what they carry. They were trying to slip in stool test without even telling me. When I found out, I asked the staff why my dog needs it and what can you figure out by doing it. The staff couldn't even answer. I feel that they were not honest about what's going to be on your bill. I booked an appointment, and waited in their reception for 30min., and another 20min. in the exam room. why do you even take booking if the wait is going to be this long? I can just go on and on and point out all the details, that will never end. I understand you gotta make money for doing your job, but I don't want to be hustled for my dog being sick. never going back for sure, and would never recommend them to any of my friends. Read Less

I’ve been with this vet for 2-3 years now and I had absolutely no problems, everyone there is really nice until this happened. My poor bunny got sick and I brought him in after he refused to eat and drink. Once we reached the doctors office he seemed to be doing better and they checked him out saying maybe he was stressed or had a stomach ache. When I went home with him that night, he degraded rapidly even after receiving the medication perscribed to him. He actually became limp and passed away that night. I’m not sure what to make of this incident, has I don’t know the medical side of what happened. I don’t feel like it was the vets complete fault, but can’t help but have speculations. If i can start by saying if I could give this place a minus star I would with no questions asked. I had been a client of this vet for over 12 years. I used to go to them when they were on Hayden Street. I took my dog here for boarding many times. The last two times I left him here I left with a dog with green discharge coming from his eyes and the second time he had flesh taken off his nose. Both times I picked him up and no one told me about these two issues. They advertised on there website that your animal would be checked by a doctor free of charge when you board your animal. Clearly this was not done. When I inquired about this the doctor kept insisting that i was not telling the truth. I finally said to her "instead of you saying no check your website" Finally the receptionist did and told the doctor I was right. I had to tell the General Manager of the company that this was on there website. Imagine that!! As for my dog leaving the clinic with flesh off his nose. I later found out through my medical file that they sent to my new Vet that when the doctor was told that the dog was rubbing his nose on the cage that had a sharp edge on it. She simply told the technician to put a towel over the cage. Now if that is caring for an animal, I don't know what is. This clinic is notorious for having you do test that are not needed. The love to CASH GRAB. I could go on for days but I wanted to give a shout out to 4 people that I truly believe should not be in this industry. Wendy (Useless Manager) Dr. Choi (cancelled my dog's surgery because i asked too many questions and they wanted me to pay for their time.) Sandy who is the General Manager. (she likes to lie) And last but not least Diana (Receptionist) you walk in she doesn't even greet you and when you greet her, she just looks at you. I don't think she likes men. I have never encountered a person like Diana. She is the worst receptionist I have ever met. Tells me a lot about a place when they hire people like her. I challenge the clinic to say that anything here is not true. I have their own file on me and my dog. I must say they like to talk badly about their clients. DO NOT USE THIS CLINIC AND IF YOU DO, TAKE CAUTION. Also a special thank you to the person who saw my initial review and added it here. Thank you very much. Read Less

I just gave 5 stars because Dr. HEATHER STEEDE is an amazing and dedicated vet, many years ago I was going to this clinic and she was always really caring, I was unfortunately seen by other vet after maybe due to schedules, some Dr Vihos and I really felt like she was all for the cash, not empathetic, on top of that I had another vet or assistant asking me if I wanted to check the anal glands and I was charged a ridiculous amount for a 5-second check that I usually do at home, (he didn't express the glands because it had just had surgery a month ago and a follow up the week before), didn't mention that this was a charge (as if checking the heart rate for example) and the clinic is not cheap so I felt a bit cheated, even after he spoke with the clinic owner to wave and refused so I was annoyed but let it be. Anyways I ended up moving somewhere else far but I always wanted to thank Dr. Steede because she is the only vet that really seem to care there. I remember coming after the surgery to pick him up and she was sitting n the stairs holding my pup and cuddling him so she really moved me for taking time to comfort him. I hope one day she opens her own clinic I will definitely visit there. The receptionists were nice too. Thanks Read Less

I started going here right when we brought our puppy home... after speaking with fellow dog owners in the neighbourhood, they all warned me and some had horror stories from this animal hospital. I should have listened. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The vets and staff do not care about the pets... they care about money. I brought my fur baby in to get flea medication (the place is at the end of my street). They told me they would have to do an exam... that's 130 dollars for them to say yes... he has fleas. I'm pretty sure we were aware of what they were... My puppy is 7 months old... he has been to their vet literally 6 times since we have brought him home. They have done an exam..  this was purely a money grab. They constantly push neutering on me... even though I have consistently told them I want to wait til about a year.I found a great vet who you can tell absolutley loves animals and will spend the necessary time. I feel they have my puppies best interest at heart. I will stick with them. Please do not go here... they will up sell and charge you for things your pet doesn't really need. Read Less

TL;DR -Very sales-pushy and deceptively friendly. This veterinary hospital is excellent at pushing sales. They are absolutely AMAZING when it comes to repeatedly asking you to submit a stool sample in the days leading up to, during, and after the examination. Unwavering confidence in the idea that you'll come around to it anyway, so why not spend that extra $100 now? They must really love poo! Hate knowing about honest, upfront costs? Good news- with suspicious, yet calming reassurances like "I can get you a sample size!" or "I'll go ahead and get that stool test kit for you!" you're covered. For a fee of course, but that's not important right now. No. Better to deal with that later when you're too embarrassed to ask them to ring the total up again minus that sample, and stool test kit you just didn't refuse hard enough for the ninth time. Nowhere else have I encountered a veterinary staff possessing all the salesperson savvy of a personal trainer selling you a gym membership. What a time to be alive! Read Less

They are open til 12 and never EVER have they turned me down. They broke down exactly what needed to be done in a very informative way so I understood the cost and the reasoning for each procedure. They also educated me on pet insurance, which i see the value in now. Every day my cat was in their hospital Dr. Gigi took the time to call me with an update. Dr Gigi was incredibly pleasant, professional and understanding. I cannot thank everyone enough for all the time, love and generosity that went into taking care of my cat. Sad place for animals. I got there with a case for my cat with a suspicion of urinary trait infection. After a $ 600 battery of exams (including a non requested $100 anesthetic only to perform the x-ray), the suspicion turned to bladder stone, with something quite odd as the main solution for it: a surgery. The estimate for the crystals removal on my cat was $ 2000, which astonished me, and even more when I noticed the obvious dietary dissolving of the stone was briefly mentioned. The fact the stone is an oxalate or struvite strongly determines whether surgery is the way (that was clarified) but the fact that this method was pushed right away from the beginning seemed quite odd. Reading the other reviews here, now it makes sense, doctors there may or may not be a money grabbers but they were indeed doing their job well as employees trying to push the most expensive method down our throats. No real follow ups have been given since we've decided to try the diet to dissolve the stone and every medication we needed is just so freaking pricey. They try to push and charge for every single bit. Do not recommend this place and they charge the oxygen you breathe if they could. Never again I am coming back here, vets in my country love animals, at least for the most part, these will reap you off. Read Less

Thank you to this clinic...will never forget the great service they have shown. The vet and receptionist were professional, sensitive, and caring, in trying to save the life of a young cat I brought that was unfortunately hit by a car, about 1.5 years ago. I still remember their compassion and sensitive demeanor, and how they tried hard to save her life and give her a chance. Although her condition was severe and as it became clear she was already passing, they showed respect and compassion to us which I will never forget and greatly appreciate. I am very impressed and happy to have found them, and have recommended them to other pet owners (esp. family and friends) who have been happy with the truly great care their pets have received. I feel that they truly care about healing the animal, and are in this profession for the right reasons, which is important when it comes to finding and trusting a vet. I did not enjoy my experience here at all. I had to take my cat here for an emergency and it took them 4 hours to deal with her fully... Then came the $700 bill, which was followed up with them not having all meds she needed in stock (even though I had to pay for them all). They told me they would order them the next day and would be ready for pick up in a couple of days and they would call me. No one called me. I had to visit the clinic twice and call three times when they finally gave me all the meds I paid for!! They said they would file my insurance papers but it's been over 10 days and despite several calls from me and them promising every time to "do it today", they still have not done so!! For the amount of money I have paid them, they have given me exceptionally bad service. The vet initially said I could call her any time I had a question... When I called her about my cat's reaction to the food the vet had prescribed her, I was told the vet would get back to me... But as you might have guessed based on my review, I still have not heard back from the vet! I have to continue chasing them to file my insurance papers now because I'm out $700 and a lot of patience because of them. Will not be coming back here. The only reason I gave them 2 stars is because they're open till midnight. Literally the only advantage of going here. Would recommend you find another veterinarian for your pet. Read Less

I have been going here for a few years now, started after my cat got a UTI and needed some ongoing care. The staff are very friendly, the patrons are also nice to be around, and Dr Vihos (might have spelled that incorrectly) clearly loves her patients. They are respectful when you have to make choices about high cost procedures and are very willing to help you understand what contributes to the cost of an operation. I think what they charge is pretty reasonable, animals in general can be expensive.I have had to wait for my appointment to get started due to other appointments running late or other animal emergencies, but I don't fault them for that. I think they could do a bit better communicating when they are behind schedule, just to manage expectations. They are pretty busy at times so don't be offended when they pick up the phone with a quick "please hold". They are probably just with a customer. Read Less

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I have rabbits. My rabbit had stasis, and I knew I had to take him to the vet. Unfortunately, my regular vet was already closed. And so I thought of Beaches Animal Hospital because I remembered they had long hours and had a rabbit vet based off of their work with Rabbit Rescue. Also, it was a lot closer than Campus Estates in Guelph since I live in the GTA. Beaches Animal Hospital couldn't take me because their rabbit vets were not in. The receptionist instead referred me to their sister clinic, the Downtown Animal Hospital, who had a "rabbit vet" available. I called Downtown Animal Hospital and rushed my rabbit to their office. The vet tech didn't know how to handle my rabbit properly. I forgave that because my rabbit is more finicky than most (even more so than other rabbits). Then, the vet came. "Dr. Gigi" (who I suspect is Dr. Gihan Zeitoun). Dr. Gigi cooed at my rabbit a bit without handling him, which looking back now, is likely because she didn't know how to handle my rabbit. I spoke briefly about how I knew it was stasis since my one of my other rabbits had it frequently before passing away. Then Dr. Gigi asked if how I knew my rabbit was in pain and if he cried. [This is huge if you know anything about rabbits.] ALARM BELLS!I questioned if she knew anything about rabbits and she said she was "testing" me on whether I knew my rabbit was in pain. Yep, testing my knowledge. I NOPED OUT OF THERE IMMEDIATELY, placed my rabbit into the carrier and sped to Campus Estates all the way in Guelph. My rabbit is thankfully fine because of Campus Estates and their care. And reading the reviews now, I shouldn't have even bothered wasting the time and gas with this place. TL;DR: I thought I try some place closer to home instead of Campus Estates, but there was no chance of it. Campus Estates is ridiculously far, but they know how to treat and care for rabbits. Downtown Animal Hospital? KEEP ALL CRITTERS AWAY FROM HERE! Read Less

Do not take your animal here if you need any kind of customer service. Here's my experience. My cat fell off the bed and looked like she hurt her hip. My friend had to drop her off there as I had to go to work. He dropped her off as soon as the vet opened. They ran a myriad of tests and believed that she had a stroke which is why she fell off the bed. I received a call that they thought she had a stroke but they were running the tests and of course to approve the $1,700 charge. I was supposed to receive a call but nothing. I was told when I called there was some sort of emergency with another animal. By 5:30, I was again being dismissed by the receptionist until I complained. Then they got the vet, I expressed my concern that they were running unnecessary tests and I had not heard anything. I felt I was being pressured to send my cat to a neurologist for an MRI. There was no explanation as to the cost and it really makes no difference to the result. Some cats recover from strokes, some do not. When I visited, she looked really terrible. There was no explanation from the vet as to the fact that likely she was looking so poor because of the medication she was on. They kept her overnight to monitor. I was supposed to receive a call from the vet in the morning and, of course, did not. When I called, they confirmed that all three vets thought she had a stroke and that I could pick her up later. When I called later and the story was the same although clearly there was no debriefing between the two vets. I was told the prognosis was poor which does not align at all with the information online.  When I arrived, even though they knew I was coming, she was still on IV and I was sent away to come back in half an hour. When I got back, I had to push to get my paperwork, I had to ask for the food I brought and I had to ask for her medication. They neglected to tell me they only gave me a partial order. The vet never explained potential side effects and it was like pulling teeth to figure out what I should be concerned about while I monitored her. My +$2,000 was never explained to me and I felt like I was irritating the staff by even being there. I had a scare today where my cat returned to how she was when I got her back. I called the vet and was, of course, ignored. I will NEVER take my cat back there. After a fast internet search, I saw the appetite stimulant they gave me has a lot of side effects which explained her sudden change. I was to give her this medication every three days and she was on the mend until I administered her medication. This review will come as no surprise to the staff there since I have been very vocal about the lack of service and more importantly lack of caring. The constant complaints about the inadequate staffing and long hours make it clear that they need to properly staff this clinic. But as I told them, the fact that they are understaffed is not my problem. My problem is that my animal is being neglected. Read Less

We have been using the Downtown Animal Hospital for 20 years now.  We started taking our cat here, and then our dog.  We have always gotten good service and veterinarian care.  It is a simple matter of trust - we trust this clinic with the wellbeing of our four-legged family members.  Yes, their bills are somewhat more expensive (we've compared our bills with those of neighbours who had similar procedures for their pets elsewhere).  But, in exchange, we get great service at a facility that is open 7 days a week until midnight every night, and where we have never had an issue getting a rush or emergency appointment.  The other clinics near us are mostly closed Sundays and many evenings.  We love Dr. Steede.  She is smart, practical and thoughtful - her patients are all in very good hands.  We also think very highly of Dr. Vihos.  There has been a bit of turnover at the clinic in the last couple of years (in particular, the excellent Dr. Surette has moved on to his own practice many many miles away in distant Vaughan), and there are one or two new junior vets on staff.  The jury is still out on these newer vets.  They simply do not have the experience of Drs. Steede or Vihos, although that might come in time. Read Less

I'm starting to think all vets are scam artists. I came in for regular vaccinations and was made to think something else 'might' be very wrong with my cat, and if they did not run blood and urine tests before vaccinating her the shots 'might' do more damage. After 30 hours of boarding ($$$) waiting for results, nothing was wrong with her. They just gave her the vaccinations I had originally brought her in for ($$$) and obviously recommended special vet food ($$$). $850 later...The 3 stars are because, as far as vets go, this one is conveniently located, has great hours, took an appointment at the last minute and the reception staff is exceptional. The vets, techs and receptionists at Downtown Animal Hospital love animals and treat them very well, but they could learn a lot about treatment of pet owners. I was very unhappy with the way we were treated by the vets when we decided not to continue exploring very costly procedures for an untreatable illness. We were also very surprised when given the final invoice since it was $500 (30%) more than the estimate. The convenient hours and location of this clinic are unbeatable, and the ability to get an appointment on short notice is definitely valuable. I brought my new puppy here because it was close to home, and looked like a nice place. She needed to get her first shots. When I made the appointment I was told the total cost for visit would be just under $200. We arrived about 5 mins early, and were treated very well by the staff. They were very friendly. We ended up waiting over an hour to be called into the exam room, than waited another 20 mins for the vet to arrive. The vet did her exam, then took my dog upstairs and had her sinus flushed, and gave shot. I can't remember why, but she gave me medicine also for some random reason (as a precaution). When it was time to pay, my bill was just under $500. I couldn't believe it. They tried to upsell me other stuff, but I refused. They knew she was my first dog, and tried to gouge me pretty good. That appointment could have easily cost me $800 if I had fallen for the other stuff. I now have a vet who hasn't charged me more than $120 per visit, and told me that all their treatment for my dog was unnecessary. Read Less

DO NOT TAKE PETS HERE.  My dog is about 8 yrs. old and was always healthy. I moved into the neighborhood in November. My dog started displaying behaviours that were very unusual for him.  His eating habits changed, he was very  inactive, clumsier, sleeping more, refused to play favorite games, and seemed confused. I took him to Downtown Animal Hospital at the end of November. They did a Professional Consultation & Wellness Examination, took blood for testing, and requested a urine sample.  Results from all blood & urine testings were normal. Total charged = $334.034 weeks go by and behaviour continues to become more abnormal.  Another appointment.  Professional Consultation, Ear Swab for mites (negative), Ear Cleaning & Treatment, ear drops for wax, and new fancy dog food that they insisted was better for him.  Total charged = $271.662 weeks later behaviour more unusual so I took him to another vet.  I explained baffling behaviour and all of the normal test results.  He said that my dog was blind. I was shocked.  He said that his pupils weren't dilating and showed me by turning the room light off and on.  Everything suddenly made sense.  I'd had Downtown Animal Hospital email my records to this new vet and we looked at them together on the computer screen.  Downtown Animal Hospital had clearly recorded in their notes of the examinations: "EEN - eyes clear".  I was referred to the Toronto Animal Eye Clinic for confirmation.  How can multiple doctors, appointments, examinations, and tests be done, and they couldn't tell he was BLIND??? They went to school for veterinary! When I went in to Downtown Animal Hospital to inquire about this issue, one of the vets that had examined him told me that she "didn't know I had to bring my OCULAR SCOPE to every appointment."   Seriously.  I guess when she shone her light into his eyes and looked at them intently to check for things like normal dilation, she must have missed that his didn't dilate at all -- because she didn't bring her, um, ocular scope???  My new vet didn't have an ocular scope either, instead he actually knew what he was doing in a routine exam.WORST EXPERIENCE WITH A VET EVER.  OVER $600 IN EXAMS AND TESTS AND THEY COULDN'T TELL THAT HE HAD GONE BLIND.

If you have also had something like this occur, please reach out! Read Less

Read Less

If you are looking for unbeatable customer service and knowledgeable, friendly, trustworthy staff then I highly recommend this clinic. My cat ended up sick back in February and unfortunately passed away last month. On more than one occasion I had to bring him in AFTER 10:30pm for an emergency. I'd also like to highlight the impeccable service from the people who work at the desk in front. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone reading!!! Read Less

I feel I am very lucky to have found them and know they will have another loyal customer once I adopt a dog in the near future. Read Less

Read Less
