I came here for a specialist visit with Dr. Mason who diagnosed my cat Max with a Ureter blockage. He advised to proceed with surgery was required to clear the blockage and advised to use the most skilled surgeon with lowest complication rate was Dr. Ringwood. I asked a MANY times about the chance of mortality and I was assured over and over that the only risk is anesthesia. PERIOD. Risks were ONE SINGLE revision surgery required as it's a small area they are working in. Given Max's strong clean bill of health aside of this, we agreed to proceed. Long story short Max went through THREE surgeries (PER THEIR RECOMMENDATION "if we don't, he will die") and was discharged to be euthanized at home. When I picked him up, his health was so deteriorated I knew it was inhumane to keep him alive any longer. He smelled of urine and feces, cried out in pain when he did try to poop, lost 40% body weight (why wasn't a feeding tube put in, was he being fed?). I knew due to the condition of his body, this was a fight that could no longer be fought anymore and it pained me to think how long he was in this condition given they had him for 2 weeks. I was never given a consent form and after researching the surgery myself I read that SUB BYPASS is the best option for this situation given the success rate of the surgery and traditional ureter surgeries are RARELY performed anymore (It's always stents or subs). I questioned why SUB BYPASS wasn't suggested and I was told this is a salvage surgery. The real reason? I found out they never actually done a SUB BYPASS. Further more I asked them how many traditional ureter surgeries they done in the last 12 months, excluding Max, it was 2. Before when I asked about the skill level, they said Dr. Ringwood has done this surgery MANY times, countless where they couldn't give exact numbers. Does this sound like a specialist in the field? 2 surgeries in the last 12 months? Clearly Max's case was far more complicated than what Dr. Ringwood is able to do. We were told that he was the best, lowest complication rate and that he's done so many that they don't know the exact number but post death they admitted to only doing 2 aside from Max. Think about that. Isn't it a little misleading? Given COVID they also didn't let me see Max to make decisions and rarely allowed for ZOOM so I have no idea the care he was receiving but his notes after discharge also stated "Max removed his catheter" as if I believe that and one time that it was blocked... I was given a lot of misleading information. Dr. Ringwood is not only arrogant but rude. When he finally called me after the third surgery since I demanded a phone call. I understandably explained my disappointment given Max was in great health prior to him operating. His response was I needed a therapist. I was very polite so I was a little blind sided by this. Canadian Veterinarians take an oath to promote animal health and well-being and to relieve suffering. I believe Max suffered the majority of his stay at VEC and they did surgeries that shouldn't have ever been done. I've tried to reach out to management but it doesn't seem they care to make any changes to their processes. ALWAYS demand numbers and don't let them rush you. VEC cost Max his life and has left a giant hole in my heart. Additionally, as I've mentioned to management, I recommend they send Dr. Ringwood for client communication courses. I don't care about what education you have, you have zero right to speak to a customer like that. I believe this was surgical error and misleading information. Dr. Ringwood, we blame you. Read Less

We were referred from the Etobicoke emergency clinic, where our kitten received excellent care from the sole vet on night duty. She was referred to VEC the next morning, where staff saw her immediately on a triage basis and from then on the care of the cat and communication with us were fully professional and of excellent quality. Doctors and staff -well trained, courteous and efficient - were all kind and patient. At all times we were given full reports of the tests given and results. The neurologist's assistant and then the neurologist kept in good phone contact and gave full info re care. Our kitten was at death's door two days ago - very, very sick - and is now quiet but pretty near normal. I can't thank these doctors enough for the professional level of care and concern. This was a positive experience for us and our pet, and we are all extremely grateful. Read Less

Take your pet somewhere else! I waited for 3 hours so my cat could be seen by a vet. The cat had worms and I just needed the medication. After seeing the vet, other hour past by so I can get the medication and the vet didn’t even want to instruct me or apply the medication right away - probably because I didn’t agree with the 700 bux quote he initially proposed for the additional exams and other things. Interesting enough it took longer to get my bill when I made clear I wouldn’t pay for more than the consultation and the medication. Also, place was filthy and I think I got a couple fleas back home. The front staff (can’t recall her name) and Jackie are clearly one the most heartless and racist ‘professionals’ who I’ve met. My wife and two young sons were seated quietly in the waiting area to provide support for our brother in law. He came out upset and crying while she was following closely behind him....intentionally badgering him to get a reaction. From what I was told, she told him that his dog was going to die and that he had a sign a release. As he walked out, she leaned in to me, my wife and my two sons, pointed and said, “You! Get Out! You’re with him, so GET OUT!” We haven’t said who we were or why we were there. We were just sitting down and waiting to hear what was happening. We could have been clients. But she saw a black family in a room filled with others who were waiting and decided to kick us out without reason. We left. My wife tried to get an explanation and asked about the dog and was berated by the front desk reception who told her that it wasn’t her job and to be quiet. When we were outside, she came out with a form and insisted that he sign for a release. We asked about payment plans and she said that they were any and demanded that we be quiet because we’re not primary. I really and truly hope that this in on camera as it will play out exactly as I had described. Absolutely disgusted! As a fellow dog owner, I pray that no one would ever have to experience this and this woman should not be around people or animals! My kids were mortified! Read Less

I just brought one of my dogs here for an abscessed anal gland. When I called, I was warned that it would be a "very, very, very" long wait. I said they were my only option, and the receptionist said "we just have to say that..." anyway, I got there and we were in and out in 3 hours which is nothing compared to what I was expecting. Especially since this particular dog has a trauma history and is terrified of the vet. They were patient and very helpful. They did whatever they could to keep my dog and I comfortable. She was sedated, abscess drained and then woken up. We got our antibiotics and pain meds. All things considered, I think I received good value for cost. Read Less

We noticed there was something wrong with our cat’s eye around 11pm. It was quite swollen, secreting purulent discharge, and was squinting the one eye. Nothing else close to us was open late. After speaking with the receptionist over the phone, she stated that “things could go sour quick” and that “we should definitely come in” so we did. It is an animal hospital and they use a triage system. There were a few animals that arrived while we were there that obviously needed care urgently which is completely understandable. But after waiting over 3 hours we noticed that several animals were being seen before us that had arrived long after we did. On one occasion, we overheard the vet tech talking to a patient, as they were leaving, saying “it’s nothing serious”. We were then told that it would be another 2 hours before seeing a vet. Obviously, they don’t know how to triage seeing as animals in stable condition were being bumped ahead of us while waiting approximately 1 hour. Also, the triage nurse said that our cats eye could potentially be bad enough that he could loose his eye. If it was that serious then why would it take over 5 hours to see a vet? Meanwhile dogs that had “the sniffles” or cats had discoloured skin were being seen after 1-2 hour wait time. Pretty sure that’s not right. Not sure if this was just a bad night for them or solely incompetence. Read Less

Thank you so much for the care of our Ouzo! From the time we called to inquire about bringing him in until we left the receptionists, techs and Dr's were so comforting and quick in getting him treated and cleaned up. In total it took 4 hours to get us in and out, but given it is an Emergency clinic we were ok with the wait. There were other animals already in their care that were in worse shape than our guy and therefore in need of their care before us. In addition there were other animals that came in after us requiring more urgent care. The visit costs about $145 but the cost is inclusive of a regular vet visit and an emergency fee. If your animal is in need then the additional emergency fee is definitely worth the expense. The fact that a DVM is available at all hours of the day and willing to take care of our animal is the convenience of paying this fee. Plus it is busy, it is Toronto after all! The time and $$ were worth it to clean up our bite and have a sense of relief that with the antibiotics he would be fine. Thanks again for making us feel so comfortable! Read Less

I experienced a very awful and very disappointing service at VEC. The following information describes nostril issues for pugs. My 8month old pug has mild stenotic nares, he doesn't have any serious breasting issue now, but if I can do anything to prevent his breasting issue in his future, especially when he is neutered , I would do it. That is good timing for a young dog, so I would try it together. My regular vet can't do the surgery, so my Vet referred me to Dr. L at VEC , so I made an appointment and visited the VEC for first consultation today. First ,a nurse ,but I am not sure who she was, asked me couple questions about my dog. She asked me another health concerns, so I told my dog scratches his ear sometimes even though I clean his ears every week, so I worried a little too. And then she took my dog to another room for a physical check up. I guess Dr L saw my dog too. in around 15mi, Dr L came back and talked with me. I am not expert, but I already study few types of surgery about nostrils, so I knew about a few surgery. Basically he explained the same information to me. He didn't mention any serious concerns, just my dog's outward appearance , but he was not sure before he checked inside my dog's throat. However he never touched my dog and did a proper examination in front of me. He just stood and talked to me. probably less than 10mi? This is so weird and very uncomfortable. He supposed to touch and do a proper examination. He was not thoughtful and didn't show any interest in helping my dog. He used to have similar case with another dog, so he could tell me about a previous case or another case. But Nothing! He doesn't give me any valuable information about his nostrils. also I asked a small concern about my dog scratching his ear often. It was not a big deal and a quick easy check up. I asked him can you check him now? However, he didn't and said next time. I felt really uncomfortable and upset. After that another lady brought two quotes. of course both quotes are very expensive. one of is $3500 who want to trust unhelping Dr and asked expensive surgery for my dog? And I waited 30minutes. They charged me $165 plus tax for a meaningless and very uncomfortable consultation.Read Less

I don't prefer going to this location for pet emergencies because of the potential wait time and the distance and commute. I also was not pleased with the bedside manner of one of the vets we visited there. I took my young adult cat in who was having minor complications with the respiratory infection that resulted in some secondary eye infections. Not knowing what was "normal", seeing blood leak from his eyes made me very uncomfortable. Yes, it was a minor issue since he wasn't bleeding out or anything like that. But I would say anyone who saw blood coming out unexpectedly to be naturally concerned. Her attitude was unconcerned and I felt rushed and as if I was wasting her time. I have never seen her otherwise so have no reason to give her any reason to act as such. I understand that this is medical care but in this case, we pay out of pocket so to an extent, I expect to have appropriate customer service! I would not criticize that she is not knowledgeable or rude or anything like that... she's not. But I certainly wouldn't prefer to see her again with my pets--especially in an emergency situation where we were likely emotionally charged. I've taken other pets here and even had my childhood cat put down here because she was doing so badly. We've spent a lot of money here at some point. Thing is though, with the way the staff seem to be, and the wait times (lots of people go!) and the commute there... I would rather just not go; there are more negatives weighing on going here than not. I would prefer to go to the after hours clinic that's close to me and not nearly as busy. Their doctors are also all super nice. In short, I would recommend this location if it's close to you and you have a pet emergency (because everyone is clearly qualified) but otherwise, I don't have a lot of positive things to say about my experiences and would choose to go elsewhere with my pets and money. Our story at the VEC didn't end the way we wanted- BUT, it was through no lack of love, thoughtfulness, collaborating, thinking, and trying on the part of the VEC. We arrived to Dr. Cochrane as a referral and in our 3 visits, she took the most gentle and kind care of our Lola Bean the Pug. She stayed in great contact with us and it was very apparent that she was working every angle possible to figure out our mystery girl. In the end, we had to say the most unexpected "see you another time" of our lives- but Susan made our awful choice a bit easier. She cared for Lola (and us) in the most sensitive and loving way, we will be FOREVER thankful. An additional thank you to the amazing front staff who set up triage for us when needed and helped me the day I came to take Lola *home* for the last time- it takes special people to handle my special brand of waiting room breakdown, and they did. Thank you all again for the support & care we received. -The FriedheimsRead Less

I have had to say heart-crushing goodbyes to two of my beloved cats at VEC - my soul-mate Jessie, who had a blood clot that blocked the flow of blood to her hind legs nearly 10 years ago, and then this past November my sweet little Lily, who likely had a cancerous tumour rupture in her abdomen. In both cases they crashed suddenly, and were in critical condition when we arrived. The entire team is highly compassionate, efficient, skilled, and caring and my girls were whisked to the back as soon as I arrived. I know that they had their best chance of surviving at VEC, and if the team there couldn't save them, no one could. The cost was completely reasonable for emergency care - Jessie's care cost more, since she hung on for two days, as we did everything we could to save her. Lily sadly passed away soon after we arrived, after a valiant resuscitation attempt. From the diagnostics the team was able to perform before she passed away, the doctors were able to give us some answers that set our hearts at ease - and the cost of the entire visit was less than the deductible on my pet insurance.  I also took my cat Gingerbread to VEC when she suddenly lost her ability to walk properly and was referred by my regular vet. Two neurologists examined her separately, since her case was odd, and the primary neurologist walked me through a number of potential explanations and a range of tests that we could conduct to investigate them. She prepared a comprehensive potential treatment plan that would have cost thousands of dollars, but recommended that I not proceed with it right away. I was scared after losing my other girls, but she let me know that if it was her cat she would take her home and observe her for a day or two before proceeding with invasive tests like a spinal tap. That's what we ended up doing, and two days later, Gingerbread was fine - and her bill was 1/10th what it could have been (and I would have been willing to pay!) if we had proceeded with the full set of tests.  That's the sign of a vet that puts pets and their owners first. The VEC will always be my first choice if my pets have an emergency.

Thanks so much to the VEC for the wonderful care they've provided our Finley...Last January Finley had to be hospitalized overnight. Everyone at the VEC from the receptionists to the vet techs to the specialists were so supportive and knowledgeable. A few months ago Finley also had a biopsy at the VEC and his stitches healed beautifully. By the time we got back home he was ready to play. Every detail of the procedure was explained to us patiently and we were kept informed throughout. Read Less

We could not be more pleased with the care that our cat received. We rushed him in with a medical emergency and from our first moment there until his discharge, we received excellent care. The entire team from Veterinarians to the Vet techs were superb !! Everyone was extremely compassionate and explained everything to us in detail. No pressure or 'selling' of unnecessary tests. We were given options and they were extremely considerate of the expense that we were incurring. We were called at home with updates and our long list of questions were answered in detail. We are grateful to everyone for the care they gave. I would highly recommend this clinic. Buster says THANK YOU !! Read Less
