Do not take your pet to MacKay. High doctor turnaround, low experience of new graduates and tunnel vision in diagnostics makes for poor service. When Piper, my companion of 16 years fell sick, we visited MacKay three times in a span of eight days. We were prescribed a variety of medication but no blood work was suggested at any time. Instead hospitalization and later heart ultrasound were suggested (Piper had a heart condition since 2016). The day of the last visit, Saturday night, based on Piper's symptoms and some research I realized she was in toxic shock. We took her to the Animal Emergency Clinic in Oshawa and asked for the blood analysis. The results were provided within 30 minutes and indicated 75% kidney failure. Because of the weak heart no effective treatment was possible. We received proper diagnostics and were able to make a sound decision. Piper "went softly into the night" the same night. Her suffering ended. If you can pass the unfriendly reception at the Animal Emergency Clinic you will find an excellent service there. They also lowered their fee from $165 to $99. Full lab and 24/7 service are amazing. Read Less

This place deserves less than one star. My father took our second cat here to get some tests done and $1,600 later it was inconclusive. They took liquid out of his abdomen and even did an ultrasound and still came up with nothing. My father then took the cat to another place and concluded that he had an incurable disorder after just one vet visit or taking more liquid out. If it wasn't for getting a second opinion we wouldn't have known what was wrong and sadly have to put him down on Saturday after the vet called with some more information about him. We used to bring our first cat here all the time but we don't know what happened with the old vet that was here. They were so good with him and when the time came even put him down for us. Beware if you have a big scary looking terrified dog whose never hurt a soul, he or she would get treated like a criminal for just being alive by a bunch of awkward, uncaring, unprofessional staff members who are terrible at reading animal body language. All this place knows how to do well is guilt trip you into spending more money on your pet and maybe putting some poison on them for ticks and fleas, sometimes even get you to pay for things they don't even have at the moment, but hey, pay for it now and you'll get a call when it arrives... They will not even truly listen to what you tell them, just write down what they interpret (eg. I had a dog that went on hikes and long bike rides at least once a week and when I asked to see a copy of his file I noticed the vet had put a note down that the dog was only let out in the backyard! My dog had arguably a more adventurous life than my teenage brother does, it sadly may have even played a role into delaying the diagnosis) And when something was slightly off with the bloodwork, they didn't do anything about it. I only found out two years after with some new bloodwork results of my seriously ill dog, that there were early signs from 2 years prior that no one had told us anything about. I guess I should at least be thankful the vet admitted to this. Nevertheless I'm thankful i know where not to take any animals in the future. But terribly sorry to my dog that had to experience this place. Read Less

Used to be a 5 star vet, now they're worth less than one star. Our old vet was fantastic with our cat, she did all of his appointments from kitten to over a year, and we all loved him (myself, boyfriend, and the cat). Our cat used to purr so loudly with her that she had to turn on the tap in order to hear his heartbeat. Took him in for his annual exam and rabies vaccination, and the entire visit was one frustration after another. I got the reminder phone call the day before, where I was told I HAD to bring in a fecal sample, but not to worry, it was part of the annual exam. I was also told my appointment was for two and a half hours earlier than I'd scheduled it, which wasn't a huge deal, I wasn't busy all day. We got to the appointment, and were surprised to see a new vet we hadn't seen before, with no explanation as to why we weren't seeing our usual vet. She then proceeded to weigh our cat in at 7.2kg (15.86lbs), despite my having weighed him only a couple weeks earlier at 9lbs. She then tried to convince us to stop free-feeding him, despite being told several times that we have a second cat who is significantly smaller, so scheduled feeding wouldn't work well anyway, as they have to eat different amounts, and both graze regardless. They often don't even finish all the food I put out, and I do measure and track how much I leave out anyway. I was told to consider diet food, the cat doesn't even LOOK overweight, he's no where near heavy enough to consider special food. Then she tried to convince us to buy a synthetic pheromone spray, because after three days our cat hadn't accepted the new cat. (It usually takes around a week for cats to warm up to each other). We were then told we should be treating our INDOOR cats for fleas, despite both of them having already been treated, and when we mentioned that, were told to treat them once a month during all the warm months of the year. The exam took twice as long as usual because she wasn't good with the cat, she was handling him rather roughly, and he kept trying to leap off the table. When she offered him a treat, it was one that I recognised as a dog treat (the old vet accidentally reached in the wrong jar at the last appointment and we joked about it). The jar of cat treats wasn't even out. We finally went to check out and discovered our total was $75 more than expected. All the prices had been raised, AND we were charged for the fecal sample that I was told was part of the annual exam. We were mislead about charges, pressured to buy things we didn't need, shamed for our cat's weight, and left feeling very angry, with no money left for the week, and a very angry cat. Read Less
