I accompanied a friend with a much loved old cat to the Taihape vet recently. The vet was fantastic, supportive and professional. It turns out that the cat was terminal, all very sad. However, the older receptionist was cold and showed none of the manners that one would expect from a person in her position. There was a farmer client also there at the time and he was treated with good manners and respect, by the receptionist. Why then I asked myself, did we not get the same treatment? I, along with my whanau and friends, suspect that it was a case of Homophobia. Discrimination in New Zealand is illegal, people are entitled to their personal views, but one would expect that someone in a receptionists position especially at a veterinary clinic would know better.
