Private vets' x-ray machine is broken so I she referred me to the SPCA for assistance. They charged me more than my private vet does for a 2-minute consultation that I didn't need and never even got to see happen so for all I know they didn't really look at her. I've been charged for x-rays that for all I know don't even exist because two weeks later they still haven't sent them. They wanted to keep my cat overnight and charge me a thousand Rand upfront for "potential" treatment but I refused. Disgusting. Posted by Elise de Beer Its with a broken heart I want to warn all cat owners. Our precious family cat was killed on Sunday morning by SPCA. A neighbour took Sonix to SPCA from Hout Bay on Friday afternoon, as it had been trespassing into his home and eating his cats food & confronting their cats. SPCA killed him a day and a half later, on Sunday, WITHOUT scanning him! My cat is a pedigree, registered Main Coon who is well groomed. He was micro-chipped. SPCA claimed he was deemed 'feral'. They say they don't scan cats they dreem 'feral', and they don't wait the usual 5 days before putting them down,( AND they don't even do it the normal humane way if they're 'hostile'.) Sonix hissed at them through the cage & was labeled 'hostile' and 'feral' based on this alone! He hissed because he was petrified, as cats do when caged & afraid. Don't they get that?! I was there at 10:15am this morning to fetch him when they told me he's dead, & they wouldn't even let me have him to bury him, nor did they give me any proof that he was actually dead. How do I know they haven't sold him to some syndicate??! I had to leave their premises shattered & in tears and they gave me nothing but a lame 'sorry for your loss'. So, despite SPCA punting the chipping of our pets, they don't even bother to check before killing them if they decide your animal looks or acts feral. He wasn't even taken out of the cage he was brought in. Just killed through it. He was given no chance of life or to be found by me. I'd suggest collaring your cats as & perhaps tattooing! What disgraceful conduct SPCA. Your story stinks. You should be ashamed of yourselves! RIP Sonix.Read Less

I sent my dog with the mobile unit in Kuilsriver to get sterilized on Thursday and called everyday until yesterday to get an update on how he was doing or whether the dog is okay and response I got was...Sorry we do not give updates over weekends. Today my wife picked up my dog to find that he 1- is not sterilized and looks skinny 2- he developed a kennel cough at your facility and that's why he could not be sterilized 3-he had a tick on him 4-he had scratches in his face that was not there when he was dropped off. I sent my perfectly healthy 6 month old dog that weighed 24kg to them thinking they will take care of him and I get this bullshit and my dog weighing at 21kg, thats 3kg under....worst is we still had to pay for the medication on top of that. So my dog was there the entire weekend and no one could tell me anything. He could've stayed at home and not develop this crap illness he has now....I know the SPCA as an organization is not to blame...but for reasons like this people like me tend to not trust them in future. People and owners are constantly told by your organisation on how to take care of their pets but it would seem your pet that you entrust to them don't get taken care of appropriately....so keep the payment made to have my pup sterilized as a donation as I will rather pay the expensive cost by a private Vet that will actually be helpful and take care of my pet the way I do...guess there is a reason as to why people choose to not use SPCA to avoid situations like this...Read Less

Yesterday morning we took our cat to the SPCA Grassy Park. We were all anxious and did not know what to expect. The receptionist on duty Hayley was so professional and made us feel at ease. When our cat was examined the "examiner" was so knowledgeable and explained to us in simple terms what could be wrong with her (cat). The vet eventually examined her and she was kept overnight. I give this branch of the SPCA 5 stars and 10 out of 10 for professionalism and their approach to the owners of the animals. Its so obvious they have a passion for what they do and a love for all animals. Read Less

I am disgusted and deeply disturbed by the lack of action and care on behalf of distressed animals by the SPCA who would like to have us the public believe they " care for, speak for and protect the rights of animals" Thrice I have reported to them the case of a dog being kept chained up under appalling conditions, in all kinds of weather, being fed expired take away meals which the owner is unable to sell outside Balmoral Complex in Woodstock Main Road and I am told there is nothing that can be done because it is a security dog. But it gets worse, my sister reported a diseased and dying dog laying outside her property in Mitchell's Plain who needed urgent medical attention, she was told to either contain the dog herself until an inspector arrived or leave it to die because the SPCA did not come out to capture stray dogs! I will NEVER again donate money to the SPCA since it is clearly not being used to help animals in distress. SIES! Read Less

Always received good care in the past but tried to get seen today before they closed at 5. When I phoned I was told that if I got there at 5 there I would more than likely be turned away as all the vets would have left for the day. Why have open hours until 5 if you really need to be there by 4 to have a hope of being seen, or so I was informed on the phone. Read Less

SIES! Read Less
