I would highly recommend NOT going to Bergzicht Animal hospital. This was my experience:
I had been going to Bergzicht for almost a year and a half, had spent a lot of money there (and they are quite pricy compared to other vets) but mainly went there for convenience as I was living in Eden. My boyfriend and I also chose to stay in Eden on the Bay one of the reasons being that the vet was downstairs and very convenient as we were planning our immigration to Europe and were doing a DIY route for my dog to come with us. In short, after a year and 5 months of going there, doing the Titre test through them and all else, they would not do the EU health certificate for me as I did not have a pet travel agent. This certificate needs to be done a few days before departure and a day before the state vet appointment. They did not formally let me know that they would not be doing it, but 3 days before the appointment I bumped into an employee (Samantha- who is amazing) in Eden who told me they won’t do the health certificate because I do not have a pet travel agent and asked ‘if anyone had spoken to me'. This was 3 days before the appointment and a week after the appointment was made, no one told me and obviously, certain things need to be done for my dog's trip to go smoothly. They also messed up with my vaccine book and wrote the incorrect date of the next vaccine, as every fine detail in documents needs to be perfect for pet travel, this was super annoying. I have emails where I asked months prior if the next vaccine date was correct and Annuska responded saying it was. She is front of house and whenever I spoke to her I was not comfortable as she has a very condescending way of speaking, questioning whether I know if my dog will be ‘euthanized’ if I don’t have the correct documents or if things weren’t perfect. Instead of helping or assisting where necessary I was rather questioned and was trying to be convinced this ‘DIY’ is not possible without a pet travel agent. She also assisted with my Titre test which my name was incorrectly spelt on it. These are things they should know about and make sure they are correct, ironic since they were questioning me.
I complained and was told that I will get a letter to state that the vaccine book was a mistake on their end (which I wanted, in case my documents were questioned while travelling with my dog) and today still have not received anything.
In the end, I made a last-minute booking with Hakuna Matata Veterinary Clinic where they happily helped me with the EU certificate and even triple-checked everything for me. They were so helpful and did not understand why the vet I had been going to did not help me or did not know about people bringing their pets themselves.
Bergzicht vets are inexperienced or they get a commission from the pet travel agents. Also, you hardly have access to speaking to a vet, you constantly deal with front-of-house women, some of which are lovely, like Samantha who luckily informed me, otherwise I would never have known and my whole plan would not have happened. But the vets are in the back and hardly ever seen.
If anyone does a DIY route with their pet when immigrating you know what stress and how much admin it all is, I chose to do that myself, but having a vet who instead of helping, learning with you or guiding you at least, makes it harder by ‘unofficially’ cancelling the appointment a few days before and messing up your important official documents creating more worries, is not acceptable. I am truly disgusted with this vet. Maybe because they messed up so much with my documents they knew they would be responsible if anything went wrong. Or they are just inexperienced as I called other vets in the area who were happy to help with the health certificate. To act as if they care more about my dog than me is ridiculous. Pet travel agents are easier to go with if you want to spend an extra 15 to 30k, but some rather learn and make it possible on their own. I was in contact with other people who did the DIY route to the same country and knew it was possible and not this thing only capable by pet travel agents. Those agents are in the same groups as us finding pet travel buddies for their customer's pets. I’m not saying I recommend doing a DIY for every person as it is a lot of admin and reading and being organised, but the fact that Bergzicht wouldn’t help me after everything is ridiculous. Besides the health certificate, they removed a cyst from my dog's leg last year, they left the wound completely open as that is what they suggested and told me to watch my dog doesn't lick it. I did as much as I could, but you cannot watch your dog 24 7, it got infected and I had to go back and get treatment which I paid for again. So regardless of all of this, I would never go there, it was purely for the convenience of location and I wish I stopped supporting them way before.
So.. To Bergzicht animal vet... my dog arrived safely with me in the EU WITH all your errors and WITHOUT your help! Hopefully, you can now learn DIY is possible WITHOUT a travel agent. Read Less
