although I got the first check up for free (which was good) the vet was most definitely trained to get as much money out of me as possible.
so, to start... wanted to change over to this one as it is close to my house, and as I no longer have a car it was hard to get up to our previous vet's.
Firstly, it started with weighing both the cats, and was told they were both underweight and needed blood tests (80 each). Vaccinations (about 40 each). One of them had a serious tooth problem which needed to be done ASAP (350- 500), but needed the blood test first to check that she could handle the anaesthetic. (Was told one tooth needed to be extracted).
Then came the, "oh, but if you pay a monthly fee of (around 20 a month) it'll make everything a little bit cheaper.
Decided to go back to our old vet and ask for a second opinion. Was told that they were both a healthy weight for their age, and the bigger one had finally lost enough to not be overweight any more.
Then on to the matter of the "tooth". Turns out she had two bad teeth, both needed to be taken out but wasn't as serious as had been made out. They offered to do both teeth and throw in the blood test for free at the same time, all for between 350-500.
Now, what occurred to me was that Ashton Veterinary Surgery, would have done the blood test (80) first, then taken the one tooth (350-500), then I assume told me a few months down the line that the other one was bad and that needed to be extracted too.
There were a few other things as well regarding trying to obviously make as much money out of me as possible. I understand that they don't get funding and rely on our money, but this is ridiculous. No wonder people end up not getting pets or let them suffer due to high vet costs.
I'd recommend Avon Lodge instead. Good honest vets, aware that people don't have loads of money. Read Less
