AWFUL!!! Our 9 year old Lhasa Apso became ill yesterday. He vomited once, in the morning. As. Nurse, with 50 years experience, that in itself, didn't concern me but as the day progressed, his general condition deteriorated. There was no more vomiting but he became more and more lethargic. His breathing was shallow and rapid, he panted and from time to time he would tremble. He wasn't drinking, responding to our voices and just lay there, unmoving all day. At 6pm, I was so worried that I called VetCare and was given an appointment for 8.30. I found this to be bizarre ............an appointment for an emergency!!!
We arrived at the appointed time, filled out the necessary form, gave details to a nurse who came out of the building (social distancing was paramount) and waited in our car, as instructed. That wait lasted for an hour and a half, during which time at least three pets were collected by their owners. Chivas was called in just before 10pm and a few minutes later, the vet called me on my mobile. She said that everything was normal, she had given the dog an injection for nausea and some tablets for next day. Patronising instructions on how to treat the nausea, what to feed him and when. She spoke over me when I tried to explain that nausea was not the problem. She also informed me that she had emptied his anal glands - since when has this been considered to be an emergency?
We left our home at 8.10 pm and finally arrived back at 10.20 pm. My husband and I are both in our mid-eighties and I have some serious medical issues. I am post stroke, recovering from multiple spinal fractures and am under the care of a cardiologist for heart problems. We were parked in a disabled space, with my card displayed and I am at a loss how nobody came to check that we were OK. I neither want nor expect special treatment because of my age or condition but I do expect to be shown basic courtesy. Allowing two elderly people and a sick little dog, to sit for two hours in a car park on a cold, dark and wet night, does not even come close. Read Less
