I write this review with a very heavy heart. Our dog Charlie was referred to Southfield vet spececialts in January 2018 for radiotherapy after the removal of a meningioma brain tumor with our local specialists. From initial consultation I should have trusted my gut. Everything I asked was rushed, very unprofessional. However thinking that we were doing the right thing for our dog we agreed to go ahead with the recommended 20 sessions of radio therapy as this was described as a potentially ‘curable option’ and Charlie’s best option. Our dog coped great with the initial surgery and there was no concerns medically regarding the daily treatments. Charlie started radiotherapy and due to how far away we lived it broke our hearts that he had to stay in at Southfields for a month while he under went his treatment. Everything was going well, we were ringing for daily updates. Until the 3rd week where Charlie started to limp on one of his legs? In a panic I made the 5 hour journey to check on him to find he was indeed limping but that they couldn’t tell me why? He had X-rays which was charged for and additional ones taken that we hadn’t agreed to at an additional cost, but no real definition could be explained as to why. If they would have checked his documents prior they would see he had suffered from crutiate disease for years. They explained that his limping could be due to the position he had to be laid in for daily treatment. That being said he was in good spirits, tired as he was now on high pain killers but the nurses were great with him. He did have scabs on his mouth but I was constantly told not to worry as these will go once treatment stops. As he was now at treatment 16 and nearly at the end of the 20 treatments we would continue, reaching 20 treatments the chance of the tumor regrowing was unlikely. The remaining 4 days couldn’t come quick enough. We collected Charlie on the Saturday. Our ‘specialist’ wasn’t on duty so we were discharged by someone else. Southfields couldn’t even provide us with all the medication Charlie needed so an emergency call to our local vets to get the medication was an added stress. This being said on collection he seemed great. Although still on a lot of medication. On returning home the first few days were great and we were over the moon to have him home. Although this was short lived. Over the next few days Charlie started to go down hill. Becoming more and more quiet which was so unlike Charlie. Unfortunately he struggled to eat and even drink due to the sours around his mouth, dismissed by Southfields as a concern. This lead to hand feeding Charlie which as a chocolate lab was very unusual. Charlie couldn’t stand, or raise his head from his bed. He begun to bleed from his hose. Our local vet tried to make contact with Southfields to discuss Charlie medication and his symptoms yet got no where. No one was around to discuss his case. As if as soon as you take your pet from their care you are on your own. After a visit of our local vet and our local specialist the heart breaking decision was taken from our hands that we had to let Charlie go. Something neurologically had gone wrong. There was nothing more we could do for him. Since Charlie passing away on feb the 12th we have had many letters between ourselves and Southfields who refuse to give us any form of answers yet within 10 days of leaving there care our dog was dead. The nurses at Southfields were amazing, they must have kept his spirits up with love and cuddles as Charlie had the same personality when he came home initially as when he went in so we can only thank them for this. However the service and treatment we received for Charlie was wrong on so many accounts. We have had to pay the final bill to Southfields recently against a protest as we believe they are responsible for our dog no longer being here with us every day. Just a heartbreaking experience. The first vet I had was rude, dismissive and resented being questioned even though my dog had a very serious oral melanoma. Next time a different vet was sent in to see me and this continued. My dog is a shadow of what he was before. I was told it would increase his quality of life, but it has destroyed him. He went in bouncy and happy, seemingly unaware of the tumour, and now he acts like he's at death's door. He is unsteady walking, barely eats, no energy, just like dead dog walking. He is my soulmate and I feel so badly having done this to him. He clearly has suffered nerve damage from his treatment, and from an online internet search, it seems it will only get worse. Seems right as he has declined every day since his last radiation appointment. Something was done very, very wrong, because radiation is not supposed to have many side effect. Now my dog gets confused even climbing stairs. And Southfields have stopped responding to my calls. Don't go there. Read Less

My experience was now over 10 years ago. My lovely dog Dora had lymphosarcoma , I was told chemotherapy was a treatment not a cure and I went ahead with it. She had a good 14 months but I felt let down at the end and feel the same way to this day. She was discharged but within a month I knew it had come back and she was suffering. I immediately got in touch with them and was given an immediate appointment which was then cancelled because dr north wanted to see her. I did explain she was very unwell and uncomfortable but dr north said she knew this and to come later in the week. When I took her up she died up there two days later. I gave them a considerable amount of money out I guess of grief which I actually don't believe they deserved this was in a donation to them. I bitterly regret doing that as I feel she was let down at the end. I do feel they are completely money orientated and I still consider Dora was let down at the end Read Less

1 star only given as there is no option for Zero stars. Before you send your precious pet to VRCC consider how you will feel if this happened to you and if possible choose somewhere else. My cat B.C. went in on 3 separate sessions to have radiotherapy. Each time, he went on a Sunday and we collected him on the Wednesday. On the last visit which was to complete the final sessions of radiotherapy, when I'd phoned up on the Monday late in the day, at nearly 5pm, I was alarmed to hear he'd not yet finished the "treatment" for that day as they'd 'seen a rush on' that day. He must have been so anxious waiting and also he couldn't eat until each session was over and he'd come round. Apparently, on the last evening B.C. had developed a breathing problem, although he'd not had this before he came in there. I was not informed of this - imagine how I felt when I got a call in the night asking should she, the "Intern" Lilli Pihler resuscitate B.C. After this I got a call from the Vet Nurse asking if they could put him down! Of course, I said no. They 'cut off' from me, somehow. When she came back on she told me B.C. had died. I then asked why he died. The vet nurse said only the clinician could say why he died, the latter was supposed to be 'on call'. I was told she, the clinician was not in the building, but coming in later at 9 a.m. Later that day we collected B.C.'s body, Susan North said with a laugh that the clinician was her - later the story was changed. As well as being poorly informed of events, it appears Susan North did not make herself available "on call" during the emergency and adds to VRCC's failings. Later, I tried phoning Susan North, I tried sending E-mails trying to get to the (basic) bottom of what happened. I tried this for weeks, months. We just wanted the truth. She made herself unavailable every time I phoned, she left my E-mails largely ignored giving only a very abrupt answer overall, that the cat had cancer which obviously we already knew since that was why he was there. We never got a real picture of why B.C. died or how everything happened, a real explanation, her stalling tactics worked. As a result of failing to get co-operation from her, we have had difficulty in moving forward in the bereavement process. The bereavement process has been impeded from the silence from her office. (They managed not only to get all of their money for the entire course but extra too!) Terrible treatment, Terrible prices, Terrible outcome. Read Less

Our dog had a tumour on the pituitary gland which was treated with radiotherapy over three weeks. While it's brilliant that he is still with us two years after the treatment, he is nothing like he used to be. He used to be a bouncy, friendly love everyone Springer but since the radiotherapy, he is frightened of everything and everyone. He even shys away from us if we try to make a fuss of him.We only get the occasional chance to make a fuss of him, when wants us to, otherwise he spends all his time avoiding us. None of these possible side effects were mentioned prior to agreeing to the treatment and, despite still loving him being around, in hindsight, we question whether we should have gone ahead with the treatment, especially considering how stressful it was for him, with all the travelling. In summary, please think long and hard, before agreeing to treatment. Are you doing it for the pets benefit or your own? Read Less

Next time a different vet was sent in to see me and this continued. My dog is a shadow of what he was before. I was told it would increase his quality of life, but it has destroyed him. He went in bouncy and happy, seemingly unaware of the tumour, and now he acts like he's at death's door. He is unsteady walking, barely eats, no energy, just like dead dog walking. He is my soulmate and I feel so badly having done this to him. He clearly has suffered nerve damage from his treatment, and from an online internet search, it seems it will only get worse. Seems right as he has declined every day since his last radiation appointment. Something was done very, very wrong, because radiation is not supposed to have many side effect. Now my dog gets confused even climbing stairs. And Southfields have stopped responding to my calls. Don't go there. Read Less

My experience was now over 10 years ago. My lovely dog Dora had lymphosarcoma , I was told chemotherapy was a treatment not a cure and I went ahead with it. She had a good 14 months but I felt let down at the end and feel the same way to this day. She was discharged but within a month I knew it had come back and she was suffering. I immediately got in touch with them and was given an immediate appointment which was then cancelled because dr north wanted to see her. I did explain she was very unwell and uncomfortable but dr north said she knew this and to come later in the week. When I took her up she died up there two days later. I gave them a considerable amount of money out I guess of grief which I actually don't believe they deserved this was in a donation to them. I bitterly regret doing that as I feel she was let down at the end. I do feel they are completely money orientated and I still consider Dora was let down at the end Read Less

1 star only given as there is no option for Zero stars. Before you send your precious pet to VRCC consider how you will feel if this happened to you and if possible choose somewhere else. My cat B.C. went in on 3 separate sessions to have radiotherapy. Each time, he went on a Sunday and we collected him on the Wednesday. On the last visit which was to complete the final sessions of radiotherapy, when I'd phoned up on the Monday late in the day, at nearly 5pm, I was alarmed to hear he'd not yet finished the "treatment" for that day as they'd 'seen a rush on' that day. He must have been so anxious waiting and also he couldn't eat until each session was over and he'd come round. Apparently, on the last evening B.C. had developed a breathing problem, although he'd not had this before he came in there. I was not informed of this - imagine how I felt when I got a call in the night asking should she, the "Intern" Lilli Pihler resuscitate B.C. After this I got a call from the Vet Nurse asking if they could put him down! Of course, I said no. They 'cut off' from me, somehow. When she came back on she told me B.C. had died. I then asked why he died. The vet nurse said only the clinician could say why he died, the latter was supposed to be 'on call'. I was told she, the clinician was not in the building, but coming in later at 9 a.m. Later that day we collected B.C.'s body, Susan North said with a laugh that the clinician was her - later the story was changed. As well as being poorly informed of events, it appears Susan North did not make herself available "on call" during the emergency and adds to VRCC's failings. Later, I tried phoning Susan North, I tried sending E-mails trying to get to the (basic) bottom of what happened. I tried this for weeks, months. We just wanted the truth. She made herself unavailable every time I phoned, she left my E-mails largely ignored giving only a very abrupt answer overall, that the cat had cancer which obviously we already knew since that was why he was there. We never got a real picture of why B.C. died or how everything happened, a real explanation, her stalling tactics worked. As a result of failing to get co-operation from her, we have had difficulty in moving forward in the bereavement process. The bereavement process has been impeded from the silence from her office. (They managed not only to get all of their money for the entire course but extra too!) Terrible treatment, Terrible prices, Terrible outcome. Read Less

Our dog had a tumour on the pituitary gland which was treated with radiotherapy over three weeks. While it's brilliant that he is still with us two years after the treatment, he is nothing like he used to be. He used to be a bouncy, friendly love everyone Springer but since the radiotherapy, he is frightened of everything and everyone. He even shys away from us if we try to make a fuss of him.We only get the occasional chance to make a fuss of him, when wants us to, otherwise he spends all his time avoiding us. None of these possible side effects were mentioned prior to agreeing to the treatment and, despite still loving him being around, in hindsight, we question whether we should have gone ahead with the treatment, especially considering how stressful it was for him, with all the travelling. In summary, please think long and hard, before agreeing to treatment. Are you doing it for the pets benefit or your own? Read Less
