Downes as Downes truly warrants a 6 star rating but now it is a Medivet, a ZERO star should be given, but only 1 star is available. Medivet is a typical Corporate body, all they want is increasing the revenue and get higher up the branch league ladder. True, they take your money quick enough, but you try getting a refund! Rayleigh branch cannot give refunds, they are handled centrally at Medivet in Watford. Thorpe Bay is a better branch (at least while the remaining vets/staff of Downes, as it was, are not retired) and if your beloved pets can travel the extra mileage, that is the best one. Read Less

These guys n' girls are really brilliant. I started using them about 2 years ago when I got my first kitty. Another 2 kitties later (don't worry - I still have the first one!) I'm still using them. The staff, including the receptionist, are all incredibly friendly and you never feel rushed which I really appreciate. The waiting area is nice enough (it's just a waiting area after all) and there's a big front window which faces out to the park opposite. In terms of expertise, they do seem to know their stuff and I've never had any hesitation in asking them for advice. They've been really helpful in helping me look after my 3 adorable cats, which at the end of the day, is what I think all pet owners really want from their vet. Would strongly recommend this place to anyone with pets. Read Less

I was just 18 years old when I was home alone with my puppy and thought she had a bone lodged in her mouth. I phoned Downes at midnight on a Saturday and was invited to the surgery straightaway. The Vet saw me and my puppy, who by then, much to my embarrassment, had dropped the 'bone' which was in fact a pigs ear she'd got stuck in her teeth! Nonetheless, the vet was very very kind, checked my puppy over and refused to take any payment, assuring me she'd done nothing and was just happy to put my mind at rest (at 12.30am on a Saturday!!). Since that day I have been returning to Downes and both my dogs have received excellent treatment. 10 years later, we sadly had to put my beloved eldest dog down last night, and once again, received the utmost care, kindness and love from these vets. It is heart warming to see how much they also care for my beloved dog. I will certainly continue to return to Downes with my younger dog and with any other pet I ever have the pleasure to own. As a person who truly believes that dogs are man's best friend and are family members rather than animals, I would never take my dogs anywhere but Downes. Thanks again Downes for your continuous excellent service.Read Less
