We are very sorry that Ms Speakman has had to have her dog put to sleep but I’m afraid she has not understood how the Celia Hammond Animal Trust has to operate to benefit as many animals as possible. Both of our clinics are overwhelmed by desperate people trying to access treatment/surgery for their pets when they cannot afford private veterinary fees and do not qualify for assistance from the major charities. If people do qualify for RSPCA/PDSA treatment, we ask them to attend those clinics as they will be entitled to free treatment for their pet and we have to restrict our services for animals that will not be able to receive emergency treatment anywhere else. Ms Speakman’s dog was elderly, appears to have had a malignant tumour and was on palliative care. It’s difficult to see, bearing in mind the PDSA, an amazing charity, had cared for and treated him extensively since 2012 and would presumably have put him to sleep when it was necessary, how anything we could have done would have changed the outcome in any way. I decided to leave the pdsa to come here. Spoke to the receptionist on Thursday told her I was not happy at the pdsa she told me to transfer my dogs history which I did and booked me an appointment for the following Tuesday.I was willing to pay for my dogs treatment. On the Saturday night I phoned the clinic and spoke to celia and all she was worried about was not my dogs health but why I had left the PDSA.Following this conversation she told me the vet was very busy and he would give me a call back ,no such call came.On Sunday morning I called again, still no luck. Two hours I called again where I was met with why have you left the pdsa we are not here for a second opinion not the welfare of my dog which had taken a turn for the worst. And they point blank refused to see him and told me to phone back on the Monday morning .In this time he deteriorated so much I had to have him put to sleep by a vet at home which showed me such compassion. To say I'm disgusted by there attitude is an understatement.I know you do good work but you left me disgusted and I would never recommend you again. Read Less

Celia Hammond and her team do an excellent job providing a much needed animal welfare service. Some of the negative reviews on here are quite disgraceful and should be ignored. Why would you adopt a cat in the first place if you were worried about hair on the carpet? I suggest before adopting you seriously sit down and decide if you can offer a loving home to a rescue cat. I had rescued a cat from this centre and for financial reasons I was unable to look after it anymore. The cat was also shedding hell of amount of hair, that friends and family did not want to come or eat and drink at my house. I contacted Celia Hammond and explained the situation regarding my financial circumstance that I was fobbed off by Celia and the receptionists, who in one breath said they had space to take the cat back and then the next they said there was a waiting list and I had to wait. I was then suggested to buy evening primrose and Brewers yeast to help with the shedding and this did not make any difference as I was hoovering my house 4-5 times a day just to keep on top of the hairs. Because of how I was just dismissed by the centre and how they dealt with me, I telephoned my boroughs cat protection branch who advised me the cat was to be returned to them as I rescued it from them, and only when I mentioned this to them that they changed their tune and asked me to bring the cat in when I am ready. Had I not said this they would have continued dismissing me to their liking claiming they had no space. It's been a rollercoaster of a horrible experience that I wouldn't wish on anybody who had or has good intentions for a pet, and to be treated in such a way by a centre that claims it cares about pets is an understatement. Be advised to who ever rescues a pet from them. Read Less

Be very careful bringing your animal here. My 10yo cat was very ill, slumped on the floor and very lethargic. We took him to the canning town branch and was told that they would keep him in over night to put him on a drip and do bloods. We told the vets that if we are only prolonging his suffering we would be willing to put him to sleep. When we phoned back the next day we were told by the receptionist that there had been a "drastic improvement" but we had to wait till the afternoon to speak with a vet who will go through the blood results and then they will let us know if we could collect him. We phoned back and spoke to the vet who confirmed it was kidney disease and that there had only been a slight improvement. All in all our cat was in there for a week. The day we got a call to say he could come home we asked the lady who called has he improved in himself to which she smartly remarked "well they wouldnt be letting him home otherwise would they? He was let home with kitty morphine and was exactly the same as when he left. 2 days later my sister was woken up to sounds coming from downstairs she went down to find the cat laying in a pool of brown fluid from him mouth and was in his death throws. The sound being his attempt to breathe. He died in my dad's arms. Terrible service from these so called vets. Gave misleading information several times, making us believe the whole week that he was improving and what was going on with him was manageable and treatable. Only for my little sister to watch a cruel and horrific death of her cat that she grew up with. Shameful. AVOID!!! Read Less

All I can say is thank you very much Celia for starting this charity. It has helped restore my faith in humanity. Her charity is mainly focused on cats and dogs, and especially rehoming stray cats. It is a vet aimed at helping those on low income or benefits, just anyone who cannot pay the extortionate vet bills that private vets charge. I am a rabbit owner and my mini-lop "Blueberry" broke her leg last year. I took her to the local Pets at Home vet called "Companion Care" and they were the worst type of people you could ever meet. They told me that the leg could not be fixed and must be amputated without so much as an X-Ray! This is on top of their initial demand that we pay them 500 for surgery! I was not convinced by the vet who spoke to me on the phone at Pets at Home, and so I looked around my area for another vet and found CHAT. I called them up, explained my situation and gave them the details of the current vet. The vet from CHAT called me up the same day, told me I should bring the bunny over to them, and then their vet called me on the phone and explained to me in detail what choices I have after examining my bunny, and it was very detailed and an informed discussion. Blueberry got through surgery, had a pin put in, and is now recovered. I have been back a few times to neuter my other rabbits, and to bring my thanks in the form of baking a cake for their staff. Their vets really do care about animals from the heart, and they are not here for profit (yes they are a charity!!) They do charge for their services but the cost is considerably lower than private vets. I have met Celia herself and she is an old but seriously dedicated lady. I have been to the charity as late as 11pm and there are still a lot of staff working here taking care of animals. I have been doing 10k runs to raise funds for CHAT and if your pets need help and you can't afford private vet care, your pet cannot be in better hands than Celia's charity. Read Less

Shameful. AVOID!!! Read Less

I got my rescue cat from here, quite a few years back, and think they do fantastic work. I ran a charity race for them last year, and would choose this charity over many for my next event. Read Less
