We have been going to Barton Lodge for about 10 years. In the past week, our cat has developed a UTI with all the classic symptoms (including blood in urine). There was no immediate suggestion for testing urine for bacteria for low dose antibiotic treatment if needed. Sent home with Metacam (safety questioned internationally) and Feliway Cystease Caps for the UTI. Decided if we wouldn’t use Metacam ourselves due to concerns - we certainly wouldn’t be giving it to our cat. Tried to return the Metacam (seal unbroken) - receptionist (Liz Duro) said, “Someone will come to DEAL with you, please sit there.” - While talking to Nicci Hawks in a treatment room we were talked to with a condescending tone. We were told that all drugs are controversial (METACAM Oral Suspension is not approved for use in cats. - https://www.metacam.com/faqs.php / other professional and consumer sources on the internet) and that because her cat was fine ours too would be (in a tone that hinted that we were uneducated fools), when we were told that no antibiotics are issued for UTI without urinalysis - we questioned why none had been requested - we were told, “Many of our clients find it difficult to collect a urine sample.” Please read/watch video: https://www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/pet-health-hub/conditions/bladder-infection-uti-in-cats and imagine our internalised reaction to her statement. We were then told by Nicci that if we bring in a sample the next day that it could be a SEVERAL HOUR wait for the test results. We have discovered that urine test strips are used to check 10 key parameters: glucose, bilirubin, ketones, specific gravity, blood, pH, protein, urobilinogen, nitrite and leukocytes (Nitrite: Detection of symptoms of a bacterial urinary tract infection) - give fast and easy test results - Within 60 - 120 seconds. Also, we were then informed that we could not return the Metacam (unbroken seal) and would have to eat the £23.67 cost. As a side note: Have since discovered that all the products are significantly marked up to what’s available on the internet - (VioVet etc.) and there seems to be a priority for the vets to push services and products. In our opinion, quite disappointingly, Barton Lodge has changed over the last couple of years and has started to feel more about their profits and less about the animals and their owners. Read Less
