Terrible experience with West End Vets last year when treating my cat for what was initially just a small licking wound on his paw. They put a collar on him and gave him antibiotics, both of which immediately made him depressed and he slowly stopped eating food and would vomit. They didn’t warn me the medication could cause vomiting so we only stopped it after a week, at which point he was barely eating anything. They were still treating this as if the small licking wound was the main issue, when it was evident that it then became a feline anorexia where he was no longer eating unless I put liquid into his mouth with an injection. He was severely weak at this point, but no action was taken by them until it was too late and he was put on an IV drip only to be euthanised a few hours later because he lost too much liquid and his kidneys was failing. At no point did they suggest a feeding tube should be installed, which could have been mentioned as an option at least 1 week into his vomiting and eating 1 spoon a day (out of a total of 2 weeks over which this has all happened). I was devastated and also horribly disappointed with their service and filed a complaint detailing all the phone calls and visits we made where there was a missed opportunity to respond to my severe worries about him not eating. However, in their response to my complaint, it was clear that they were just wanting to back up their employees instead of consider how fatal and dangerous their oversight was and would be for similar cases in the future. I have changed vet providers since and would recommend everyone to do the same - Animac Vets in Morningside have been lovely. Read Less

My pet hedgehog stated sneezing, and being aware that hedgehogs have respiratory problems, I decided a trip to the vet was in order. Since the practice was round the corner from my work I thought i would give them a try. After making the necessary arrangements, we were greeted by veterinarian Javi Ventura. We explained the symptoms, Jeż was given an exam and we were prescribed and given antibiotics. From the minute we entered the practice to the minute we left was an extremely pleasant experience. Javi was as welcoming and friendly a man you could ever meet and was professional, but warm though out (fellow hedgehog lover, so of course he was a great lad). As well as a few other members of staff who popped in to see the hedgehog who were as equally as lovely. Having hand numerous exotic reptile and had one or two vet visits in the past, I have to say this has been by far my most favourable. Can not recommended west end vets enough. Read Less

West End Vets on Bread Street were absolutely fantastic when I called them in an emergency situation. My cat had fallen three stories and having had serious issues with our last vet practice I called West End Vets and despite not being registered with them they advised me that if I brought Nemo in they would see her straight away! The staff were lovely and reassuring and luckily my little fur baby was fine, I wasn't hit with an extortionate bill at the end of Nemo's checkup either which was a very welcome surprise. I would reccomend them to anyone and will certainly continuing using them in the future for all three of my pets. Read Less

Excellent service from really friendly staff who are always willing to help and offer tips from their own experiences. I would highly recommend both the Davidson's Mains and Bread Street clinics.

We've been using West End Vets for 20 years for 4 cats and 2 dogs. Staff are unfailingly helpful to us and warm towards our pets. When our first dog died, we were amazed and touched to receive a two sided letter of condolence from the vet. They are thoughtful in the advice they give you: we were given very clear information and advice about our elderly cat and her various ailments, with a clear but sensitive recommendation about when she should be put to sleep. We've never felt that the ethos of the practice was about making money over the welfare of animals. Quite the reverse, in comparison to other vet practices we've had dealings with. Read Less

As an animal lover and pet owner for many years I have had my fair share of experiences with vets, both bad and good. Having an animal put down is always an extremely stressful and delicate time, particularly around Christmas, and at first I thought The West End Veterinary Practice handled my cat's euthanasia with care and professionalism. Up until I picked up the ashes, and was met with a bill that was almost double what I had agreed with the vet. The receptionist got confused as to which cat was mine, despite me phoning ahead, then could not give me a satisfactory answer for the change in price. She soon scuttled off to return with a supposedly more senior member of staff, who also could not give me a satisfactory answer. I pointed to the price list they have in the waiting room that says 'Cat euthanasia and cremation= 113', but they could not tell me why my bill was nearly 200. At one point, the elder member of staff said that they had changed company recently, but after a few more questions it became clear that this was before my cat's euthanasia and actually should not have had any effect on what I was charged. I mentioned that it is illegal to put up prices that are incorrect, and they both shrugged. None of the staff have apologised and my dispute is yet to be settled. They are dependent on people being too upset to argue with them about being overcharged and I think it's disgusting how they take advantage of people. At the very least I would have expected an apology, but for now I would recommend to stay away from this practice for good unless you want your trip to the vet to be twice the price and twice the stress.
